The purpose of this paper is to analyze the scenario of Michael, a five year old male who was just diagnosed with a hearing loss and a speech disorder, by answering questions pertaining to his situation. The first section describes Michael’s hearing disorder and the competency based individualized strategies for supporting him in a school setting using the definition laid out in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The second section summarizes why it is felt he is unable to make friends and how his disabilities interfere with his social development. The third section explains how hearing impairment can be considered a cultural difference for Michael. The fourth section discusses how Michael can be helped in order to bridge the social and cultural gap to be able to interact more with his peers. The fifth section offers some suggestions for how to evaluate his monthly social progress.

In order for him to bridge the social and cultural gap it is important for his parents, as well as his teacher to consider his own personal individual needs and preferences. Mark Drolsbaugh’s Deaf Again is a biography about his life between two dimensions of the Deaf world and the Hearing world as well as the implications he faced throughout his journeys’. Mark Drolsbaugh was born from two deaf parents and was basically forced to adapt to the hearing world even though his parents are deaf. When Drolsbaugh was born he was hearing, however, by first grade his parents and teachers discovered he was losing his hearing. The story takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where Mark was born. Both of his parents were deaf, but his grandparents were hearing. From birth until first grade, he had perfectly normal hearing so he developed language skills as any normal child would. Mark’s hearing loss was slow, and happened overtime without going noticed. When the reality of his hearing loss struck his family and teachers, questions about his education aroused. His parents and his grandparents were worried that teaching him sign language would draw him from learning spoken language, so it was decided that Mark would be raised as a normal hearing and speaking child.
This issue is important because if you try to force the Deaf to hear, they might not grow because they will have no form of communication to use with other people. Even though the doctors might say to not use ASL, this will greatly hinder your child's well-being in the long run. I learned a lot about Deaf people, ASL, and/or Deaf Culture after reading this book. Deaf people are normal, just like anybody else, and they should not be treated any differently. Some people treat deafness as a disease that needs to be cured, but it's not.
In the following chapters, there is an extensive amount of knowledge to learn about how Deaf culture is involved in our modern world. The pages assigned give us an outlook of how Deaf people are treated in our daily life, and how we should learn from it. Its gives a clear line between what are myths and what are facts, to those who are curious about the Deaf community or have specific questions. This book has definitely taught me new things that I could put to good use in the near future. In specific chapters, my mind really opened up to new ideas and made me think hard about questions, like “why don’t some Deaf people trust hearing people,” or “do we need another ‘Deaf president now’ revolution?” I realized many new things in the course of reading this book, and have recommended this to my family.
The narrator begins this chapter by introducing himself as well as his colleagues and co-authors. Ben Bahan, the narrator, is a deaf man from New Jersey whom was raised by deaf parents and a hearing sister. After spending an immense amount of time studying American Sign Language (ASL) he moved on to now become an assistant professor at Gallaudet University in the Deaf studies Department. In the book Seeing Voices, the author describes the world of the deaf, which he explores with extreme passion. The book begins with the history of deaf people in the United States of America, the horrible ways in which they had been seen and treated, and their continuing struggle to gain hospitality in the hearing world. Seeing Voices also examines the visual language of the deaf, sign language, which is as expressive and as rich as any spoken language. This book covers a variety of topics in deaf studies, which includes sign language, the neurology of deafness, the treatment of Deaf American citizens in history, and the linguistic and social challenges that the deaf community face. In this book, Oliver Sacks does not view the deaf as people having a condition that can be treated, instead he sees the deaf more like a racial group. This book is divided into three parts. In the first part, Oliver Sacks states a strong case for sign language, saying it is in fact a complete language and that it is as comprehensive as English, French, Chinese, and any other spoken language. He also describes the unhappy story of oralism (this is the education of deaf students through oral language by using lip reading, speech, and mimicking the mouth shapes and breathing patterns of speech)) in deaf children’s education. One excerpt mentioned that the idea that Deaf people are left with the burden of fitting into a hearing world was a product of “laziness” on the part of the Hearing. Instead of making adjustments to accommodate the Deaf, Deaf people are doing all of the work to accommodate the Hearing. Notwithstanding the major alterations that include learning to speak and wearing hearing aids, hearing people merely have to learn sign language. I’ve witnessed this in my own home. When my brother stopped speaking, it wasn’t ever a concern for the rest of the family to adjust to him, we continued on as if nothing changed. It’s true, Deaf children practically have no say in how they would rather communicate, it is left up to the parent and in most cases, Hearing parents. The repression of Deaf and hard-of-hearing citizens does no benefit to anyone. The whole of the species is belittled when 70 million people are denied access to language, to education, to equal opportunities. What kinds of progress in all disciplines, in all arenas of life, are sacrificed when a human mind is wasted to this degree? Promoting awareness of Deaf culture and ASL as necessary and beautiful elements of a thriving global community is just one way to bring Deaf issues to the fore of the hearing world, but any step in the right direction is crucial in advocating voices that have too often been silenced.

Social model of disability states that most disabling part of being disabled is the society and culture. Society is defined as people who interact in such a way as to share a common culture. According to Charles Taylor, culture and society should be preserved. Thus, Deaf Culture should be preserved in order to avoid misrecognition and the harms associated with it as well as preserve differing societal values. Therefore, members of the Deaf culture should be allowed to create deaf babies if they please and we don’t have the rights in deciding what life is worth living and what life is not worth living.
The deaf community does not see their hearing impairment as a disability but as a culture which includes a history of discrimination, racial prejudice, and segregation. Out of the thirty-five million an estimated 300,000 people are completely deaf. There are ninety percent of deaf people who have hearing parents (Halpern, C., 1996). Also, most deaf parents have hearing children. With this being the exemplification, deaf people communicate on a more intimate and significant level with hearing people all their lives. “Deaf people can be found in every ethnic group, every region, and every economic class” (Weta and Florentine films/Hott productions Inc., 2007). The deaf culture and hard of hearing have plenty of arguments and divisions with living in a hearing world without sound however, that absence will be a starting point of an identity within their culture as well as the hearing culture (Weta and Florentine films/Hott productions Inc., 2007).
From a deafness-as-defect mindset, many well-meaning hearing doctors, audiologists, and teachers work passionately to make deaf children speak; to make these children "un-deaf." They try hearing aids, lip-reading, speech coaches, and surgical implants. In the meantime, many deaf children grow out of the crucial language acquisition phase. They become disabled by people who are anxious to make them "normal." Their lack of language, not of hearing, becomes their most severe handicap. In the article “Deafness, culture, and choice” Neil Levy says, “The deaf will always be cut off from the buzz of conversation . . . [and] always slightly alienated from the mainstream of political, social, and cultural life.” Being deaf can have a negative impact on Gauvin’s social life. A scenario can occur when Gauvin is in the playground by himself playing. While a group of kids approach him and start a conversation. The kids are trying to ask Gauvin if he is interested in playing with them. As they are talking, he is staring at the kids not knowing what is going on. As a couple of minutes pass, the kids start to walk away from Gauvin. The kids got furious because he wasn’t communicating with them. This shows how Gauvin might face difficulties like this in his childhood where he will be different from others and can’t fully understand the situation. Another issue might occur at a birthday party where there are a bunch of people and music everywhere. As everyone is enjoying the event, Gauvin sees a little girl fall into the swimming pool. Since everyone is eating food and dancing, no one can see or hear the little girl’s voice. Gauvin tries to go and get help but as he’s trying to communicate with people they aren’t understanding him. Several assistive listening devices can improve the communication ability of deaf children. According to IDEA, every child with a disability is entitled to have access to assistive technology (California Department of Education, 2004). The California Department of Education (2004) outlines IDEA’s definition of an assistive technology device. It explains that this device consists of “any item, piece of equipment or product system…that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a child with a disability” (California Department of Education, 2004, p. 1).
Earlier on it was hard to find a public school that was able to aid towards kids with hearing loss, but today there are many programs that are offered throughout the public school systems that can aid to an ASL student. “The American Sign Language (ASL) Program curriculum is an intensive program of study dedicated to preparing individuals to interact in a positive and supportive manner with members of the American Deaf Community”(ASL, 2015).Not only do the schools offer programs to assist the deaf, but offer classes so the hearing can understand the life of a hard of hearing person. Students learn ASL and are able to communicate with the deaf community after a period of
