Case Study Description When a case study is conducted, the researcher conducts an in-depth observation on a particular individual for an extended period of time. While observing the individual, the researcher records their observations which are then translated into case materials that are used to demonstrate a possible problem (American Psychological Association, 2009). Also, as mentioned before, case studies are solely focused on observations of a particular individual. However, even though the word individual is usually used to refer to a person, in this case, it can also be used to refer to a business, school, or neighborhood (Cozby & Bates, 2012). Conducting Case Studies In the field of psychology, there are many reasons why a psychologist would use a case study as a research method. One reason to use a case study is so the psychologist can illustrate a problem (American Psychological Association, 2009). For example, a case study was conducted on a child named Genie that grew up in severe isolation. Due to her extremely neglectful circumstances, Genie never spoke a word until she was discovered at the age of 13. An advantage to using a case study is the information they are able to provide concerning rare or unusual conditions in specific individuals. By studying these individuals, psychologists are able to gather data about unique phenomenon in psychology and formulate hypotheses that can be tested in the future (Cozby & Bates, 2012). Another advantage to using case studies is the fact that they can provide such detailed results. On the other hand, the second study was a lot more specific with their participants. Sung Park and Richard Catrambone had a total of 108 individuals from the Georgia Institute of Technology. It is also worth noting that we don’t know the demographics of the participants based on their gender, age, or race; neither of the articles goes into depth about who is being tested. Moreover, the way these two articles are considered applied research is because they take a concept and apply it to a situation. In this case, they take social facilitation and create environments that could cause the phenomenon to appear. For instance, in the article by Schauer, Seymour, and Geen, they create social facilitation by introducing different supervisors and by creating anxieties for said counselors. If the counselors had been by themselves and no observed, they could possibly not feel anxious. Additionally, in the second study, they helped create social facilitation occur by putting a fake person in the room and observing to see if it actually happened. Because the first article has a variety of studies, most of the studies followed the course of a field experiment. Participants from the studies were in-training or helping out a client, however, the situations were sit up to cause a reaction out of them. For instance, Schauer brought in actors to portray as clients, and this way he would be able to reduce mistakes (Schauer 1981). In my opinion, case studies allow us to better examine the personal side of a situation that can be easily overlooked when reviewing numbers and hard data. Data for case studies tends to take the form of notes, memos, interviews, video or audio recordings, or other personal documents that when prepared and organized tell a story. By summarizing the data, we are able present the case in narrative form. Charts, tables, and figures are often used to support the narrative, but I feel it is more helpful to the audience to explain the findings. Ultimately, I feel case studies and historical reviews are research initiatives that better integrate a scholarly practitioner
