Case studies are a vital part in psychology when obtaining information on an individual, community or an organization. By taking these groups or subgroups the psychologist can identify the problem and attempt to find solutions towards the problem. Case studies are meant to serve as a tool towards guiding the psychologist in any attempts to conduct a new solution on a current issue. It is important that when a case study is being produced, that the test subjects are not tampered with and that the information obtained in a case study remain confidential in its case material responsibility. Some of the greatest psychologist of all time including Sigmund Freud and Erik Erikson used case study approaches to change the way psychology is viewed today. Using a case study in any form of psychological testing allows the researcher to document everything that occurs while testing the subject. By documenting everything that is observed through the subject’s testing, researchers can form new hypothesis to form new studies. One of the most prominent disadvantages when discussing case studies are the possible biases in data collection and interpretation. In Dr. Crawford’s, Introduction to Research: Less Fright, More Insight, Crawford explains biased data collection that disqualifies results of different case studies. Disqualifiers such as biased selection and biased testing produce a major problem for researchers because if the data is gathered biased then the whole case study may be considered flawed. There is many different types of cases; rape, robbery, arson, kidnapping and finally murder. Before I start making the assignment, I have read the case to get and understanding the big picture or the situation in the case study. After that, I analyse the case first by understanding the content in the case study and think creatively the relation between the case and the topic. Then, I read the case again and actively take notes or underline passages. After that, I discussed with my team to identify the key issues in this case, to know the problem that are related with this case study. After I identify the issues in this case, I and my team member generate possible solutions, think about consequences of various paths of action, and weight the advantages and limitations of solutions.
However on the other hand, for all advantages; there are disadvantages. In some instances when people utilize and manipulate data, they may knowingly falsify data so that it may adhere to ones beliefs or theories. In addition there are people who may deliberately tamper with information as well. When collecting information, there must be neutrality when assessing and collecting data. In addition, professional competence and integrity must be superior and finally, all research subjects or respondents must be safeguarded from potential harm and sabotage.
