Cars of the Past vs. Cars of the Future Cars are amazing! All the different parts—the engine, the wheels, the gears, and all the fiddly bits like the windscreen wipers—came together, very gradually, over a period of about five and a half thousand years. People tended to stay put, living more locally than they do now. If they needed to move things about, they had to float them down rivers or drag them by sledge. All that started to change when humans realized the animals around them had raw power that they could use. These animals were the first engines. Then the Native Americans invented the travois: a strong, A-shaped wooden frame that a horse could drag behind it like a cart without wheels. The travois was still used well into the 19th century. The next big step was to add wheels and turn sledges into carts. The wheel was one of the last great inventions of prehistoric times and a huge advance. Many people consider this the world 's first car.. In the early 1800s, Cornishman Richard Trevithick started building steam carriages with wobbly wheels. Around this time, Trevithick 's American counterpart Oliver Evans built a steam-powered river digger called the Oruktor Amphibolos that could drive on either land or water. Both Trevithick and Evans ultimately switched their attention to making steam trains, but another Cornish inventor, Goldsworthy Gurney, was convinced the idea of steam road vehicles still had legs. He designed an early steam carriage that would gallop along on rickety pins, just like a horse. When Gurney realized wheels could do the job much better, he built impressive steam buses and ran a service between London and Bath. In the 1840's their popularity kept rising as they continued to increase the amount of trade possible. The reaper, for farming, was also developed in 1831. After the steam engine was created in the early 17th century, many people and companies tried to take that same technology and apply it to automobiles. Nobody was successful until a British inventor by the name of Richard Trevithick created a multi passenger automobile that ran on a power source that was driven by a steam-propelled piston at high pressure (Bellis). Up until the mid 1900’s cars were only produced by specifically skilled blacksmiths, and were very expensive. There were only about 4,000 cars produced from the 1890’s to mid 1900’s (Bellis).

The first steam engine was patented in 1769. Invented by James Watt, this steam engine was a combination of previous made engines. The first important development by Watt was a separate cylinder for the steam to exit. Another special design in Watt’s steam engine was that it used atmospheric pressure instead of steam pressure.
Starting in the late 1700’s, European engineers began messing with motor powered vehicles. By the mid 1800’s, steam, combustion, and electrical motors had all been attempted. By the 1900’s it wasn’t very clear on which type of engine would really power the automobile. At that time, electric cars were the most popular but there were no batteries at that time that would allow a car to move very fast or a long distance. The most common style of drive train is that of the front wheel drive, abbreviated FWD. Front wheel drive was not, however, the first drive system. Front wheel drive first made its appearance in the automobile market in 1933 with the French Traction Avant, which literally means "pull from the front." At the time, the idea of having a car pulled by the front wheels was rather different, but this style of getting the power to the wheels worked rather well. What made the Traction Avant successful was that it was lighter and more fuel efficient than other car models made at the time. Classical Cars Vs Modern Cars Classical versus modern, the debate that is universally used throughout a variety of topics which includes automobiles, which happens to be continuously upgrading as the years go on. The modification to cars has become advance to meet today’s standards which causes cars to be more generic than unique now in days. Through years a wide variety of the aspects that go into the construction and style of the cars has improved creating a more modern and slick look which can be viewed as better but in numerous ways it isn’t as much of an improvement from the classics. When the comparisons and contrasts between classical and modern cars is shown it become conspicuous that classical cars can be viewed as the more superior one in the debate.
Cars have gone through many changes throughout the years. We have seen car designs from the 40’s land boats, all the way to the exotic styles we see today. People tend to look past the fact that cars are not only just a form of transportation, but also a passion and an art style, that has been carried down throughout the years. Cars are a way for an artist to express themselves through time, and hard work.
