Jared Beard forty-years old of Seminary, Mississippi, served as my mentor for my project. Mr. Beard attended Stone High School class of 1986, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and then The University of Southern Mississippi. His business, Rustic Hardwoods in Seminary, Mississippi, produces an average of $50,000.00 a year. In 2005 after Katrina, he purchased a saw mill to produce his own lumber. By purchasing the saw mill he is able to make unique items from wood sources not commercially available. Work is steady because most furniture is purchased year around but at times throughout the year business may get slow. The business is a part time operation; five people have been hired to help with the work. The business generates revenue through making wood, drying wood, and the sales of unique unfinished and finished items from wood. His business has been operated successfully this way for the past fourteen

Firstly, with Hickory Hollow is the disappearing crayfish in Ribbon Cave. This problem, it seems, is the result of heavy metals found in the water. The heavy metals were found at the site of Ribbon Cave, as well as the northern portion of Aram Creek. We tested for heavy metals at well sites G, I, L, M, and S for heavy metals, with the only positives being well sites I and L. Nevertheless, this still confirmed our theory. The heavy metals found in the water have most likely resulted from Compara Corp’s hazardous waste spills, a problem that has occurred multiple times. The heavy metals found in the water being lead, tin, copper, and ammonia would then be highly probable. To fix this problem the answer is simple, “The answer, according to the agency and an outside expert, is twofold: treatment and dilution” (Pappas, 1). Treating the water is simple: the water needs the acidity to be reduced. After that is done, you must dilute the water (add water to the creek). However, the problems will never fully go away, but they will be greatly decreased. In conclusion, in order to save the lives of the crayfish, Hickory Hollow must treat Aram Creek in order to strip the heavy metals.
Woop woop! Is the common sound heard in Beecher Terrace (housing apartments). There are 2.3 million people locked up in the United States. Kentucky spends about fifteen billion dollars per year incarcerating individuals from Beecher Terrace. Since the 1970’s the number of people locked up in the United States has grown from 300,000 to 2.3 million. Kentucky has been the center of this prison expansion. When taking an English major course during his college years, John Wheelwright is introduced to the author Thomas Hardy. Thomas Hardy is said to be obvious in his works and a man who believes everything has terrible consequences. John ends up finding a quote by Thomas Hardy: Nothing bears out in practice what it promises incipiently. This quote means that sometimes what we have high expectations for just tends to let us down. As one sees, John relates to this quote in many forms, the three most important ones being: self-identity, finding faith and honesty and morality in American Politics.
As Oregon’s timber economy continues to decline and less federal land in Oregon is being logged, more and more wood processing plants will continue to shut down, forcing numerous jobs to be lost. An impact to the economy could devastate the state. Andy Kerr Czar of the Larch Company states that a “fifty-three percent decrease has already accrued in all Oregon primary wood product jobs” (p1). This has already devastated Oregonians, forcing them to seek out other employment opportunities in the timber based economy or turn to the already overwhelmed state for financial assistance, forcing those who can’t find work or receive assistance to put up residence on the streets.

Most carpenters follow the same basic steps when getting ready for a job. They must layout or design the project. Design includes measuring, marking, and arranging materials. The carpenter then cuts and shapes the material. Carpenters use different hand and power tools, such as chisels, saws, and drills. Finally, the carpenter joins the items together with nails, staples, or glue. In this, they use rulers or framing squares to get how accurate their work is.

Patience is probably the most important characteristic a woodworker can have. The process in which woodworking goes through is very time consuming. “There are five main steps in woodworking: (1) planning and design, (2) cutting, (3) drilling, (4) fastening, and (5) sanding and finishing.” (Jared, Pg. 1). Planning and design is the most crucial part of the process. During this step a woodworker must calculate precise measurements and create a layout of the final product. Cutting is done by using a variety of different types of tools to make very defined details or simple shapes aimed towards the expected outcome. Next in the process is drilling. Drilling allows a woodworker to connect each section of wood together using screws, metal plates, and hinges (Jared, Pg. 2). This can be done using either hand or power tools. After being drilled together, sections of wood are fastened to one another with screws, nails, or an adhesive. This is the second to last step in the process. Lastly, a woodworker sands the wood and then adds a finish. Sanding is done to remove tool marks and to make the wood surfaces smooth (Jared, Pg. 3). A finish is added to preserve the wood and make the natural wood grain stand out. “If you want a silky, smooth feel to your finish, you must sand between coats no matter what kind of poly you use” (Great Book Of Woodworking Tips, Pg. 71). This goes for both hard and soft wood products. It also adds onto the final product’s look by giving it a more professionally done look. In an interview with Mr. Palacios, he said, “the most challenging thing in woodworking is making a final product look professionally done. The least challenging is to find all of the right materials to perform the job.” In order to achieve the professionally done look some people add wood stain, a dye, to change the color of the wood without loosing the feel of the surface. By doing a stain a woodworker is changing the way the final
