Carpe Diem For the Win I chose Carpe Diem for the Kentucky Derby. I really didn’t choose him for any particular reason other than I thought he had a cool name. Coffee Pot Stables, located in Kentucky, bred him. His pedigree includes Rebridled Dreams and Giant’s Causeway, who has links back to Secretariat (horseracingnation.com). WinStar Farm LLC and Stonestreet Stables LLC own Carpe Diem. Carpe Diem is a 3-year-old colt. He is a chestnut with a stripe, two socks, and a pastern. Carpe Diem has had quite an impressive career record so far. According to americasbestracing.net, he has had 5 starts, and of these “5 starts he has 4 wins, 1 second, and 0 thirds.” Also, he has earned $1,519,800 in his career, with roughly $303,960 earnings per start (americasbestracing.net). When Carpe Diem was bought at auction, he was purchased for $1.6 million. As you can see, he has just about paid for himself in his earnings. He has done quite well as a pacesetter and stalker. It seems to work quite well for him and his jockey John Velazquez. The past performances of Carpe Diem have been quite impressive as well. At …show more content…

In 2011 John was inducted into the Hall of fame, and has been “awarded the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey” twice (kentuckyderby.com). John has been racing in the United States for 22 years and ranks fourth on the “career purse earnings list at $262 million” (americasbestracing.net). When he came to the U.S., he was trained and mentored by Angel Cordero Jr., who is a Hall of Fame jockey

In the Civil War, the famed Vermont Cavalry was mounted on Morgan horses. Not only did the Union's General Sheridan ride his Morgan Rienzi, Stonewall Jackson rode his Morgan, 'Little Sorrel,' for the Confederacy as well! In the Indian Wars, the only survivor in the Battle of the little Big Horn was Keogh's Morgan-bred horse Comanche. Crosses to the fastest Morgan blood produced the great speed of today’s racing Standard breds. The foundation sire of the Tennessee Walking horse, Allen F-1, was a grandson of the Morgan stallion Bradford's Telegraph. The oldest of all American breeds the Morgan was strong enough to contribute greatly to almost every other American light horse breed while retaining its own identity across two centuries.

In 1970, the first woman to ride in the Kentucky Derby was Diane Crump where she finished fifteenth. The most recent woman and only the sixth to ride in the Kentucky Derby was Rosie Napravnik in 2013 and 2014. Although women jockeys have not won and rarely ride in the Kentucky Derby, women owners have won the race many times. In 1904, the horse Elwood won the Kentucky Derby. His owner was Laska Durnell, a woman. Other notable Kentucky Derby-winning female owners were Helen Hay Whitney, Elizabeth Arden Graham, Ethel V. Mars, and Penny Chenery, the owner of probably the greatest race horse in United States history, Secretariat, who, in 1973, won the Kentucky Derby in record time and went on to win the Triple Crown that same

There are many factors to the problem as a whole and unfortunately, there is quick answer with how The Jockey Club should handle this decision. I still stand with my decision when I say it is immoral and unfair to the creature that raced his own lungs off for you for him to be inhumanely slaughtered. With every stride down the back stretch, the animal tried to bring you glory with all that he could. You brought him into this world and gave him this life. Yet, you took it away with not even one warning. The problem of overbreeding and horse slaughtering should be addressed and given the recognition that it needs before it becomes any harsher than it already is to these poor
With over nine million types of horses in the United States, the need for quality health care for the horses has never been stronger. It’s certain that more equine veterinarians than ever before will be needed in the years to come to provide the care that owners want for their horses. According to the American Association of equine practitioners (AAEP), nearly half of the equine veterinarians are involved with performance horses(44.8%). The AVMA’S most recent employment survey of 2016 indicated that there were about 3,874 veterinarians in exclusively equine practice, with and additional 4,177 involved in mixed practices.
Death is a natural part of life that we all have to face one day. The way in which friends and love ones cope during this time is based on their culture or religious belief and their support system. Different religion or culture has different mourning customs which are unique to their own believes. For this project, three religious practices: Christianity, Muslim and Catholic were examined along with their own unique customs and believes. Despite the wide array of differences between each culture, they all believe in life after death and that there is a heaven and a hell.

Death is part of the circle of life and it's the end of your time on earth; the end of your time with your family and loved ones. Nobody wants to die, leaving their family and missing the good times your loved ones will have once you pass on. Didion and Kübler-Ross both explain grieving and dealing with death. Steve Jobs commencement speech for Stanford’s graduation ceremony and through personal experience jumps further into death and how I feel about it. Your time is on earth is limited one day you will die and there are many ways of grieving at the death of a loved one. I believe that the fear of death and the death of a loved one will hold you back from living your own life and the fear of your own death is selfish.
In choosing which method to follow, the factors to consider weigh heavily on my beliefs. Some individuals measure success by how famous they become, or how rich they are. I do not. The important criteria for my success are, developing confidence, using a method of training that is right for each horse, and becoming self-sufficient. The disciplines each have their own methods and finding a place in the horse world where my beliefs are fulfilled is important to my personal success.
Suicide, it's not pretty. For those of you who don't know what it is, it's the
I was very excited to take Death and Dying as a college level course. Firstly, because I have always had a huge interest in death, but it coincides with a fear surrounding it. I love the opportunity to write this paper because I can delve into my own experiences and beliefs around death and dying and perhaps really establish a clear personal perspective and how I can relate to others in a professional setting.
‘Carpe Diem’ is a Latin phrase meaning “enjoying the pleasures of the moment without worrying about the future”! Days fly past in a wink and we let go many opportunities which could have had changed our lives. We give up on some things until we realize that it is too late to start all over again. This article is especially for 8th graders for whom life has changed drastically with the pressure of starting the three most important years of the school life. And for 9th graders who are preparing themselves for tenth, both academically and emotionally. I hope this article strikes a chord in all those facing “the last years of school” pressure!
