Recommended: The importance of caring
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” This quote holds so much meaning in that it so truthful. To care for others is a beautiful thing. Care can be given in so many ways whether it is small or large. All types of care matter and can make the biggest difference in someone’s life. To be able to care for a person is one of the best things you could do for someone. Caring for one another in the world we live in is necessary. Everyone deals with adversities at some point in their lives and at that point is when we realize that we need someone the most. To get a better understanding of different aspects of caregiving I turned to the bible and a few other readings. Caregiving can be full of joy but also be very stressful at the same times. Care giving must be seen more as a privilege rather than a prison. It is also of importance to practice simple ways of giving care. These simple gestures can mean a lot to a person in need. The nursing occupation as a whole is caregiving. Being a nursing student I see the significance of what care can do. There are many different aspects of caregiving and I am going to discuss a few. Caring is seen in different ways around the world. In the bible there are many verses in relation to caregiving. Caregiving is such an essential part of life that it is necessary for us to understand these verses in their entirety. The bible shares a story and in that story there is an example of caregiving. “A lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, ‘Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ He said to him, ‘what is written in the Law? How do you read it?’ And he answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all yo... ... middle of paper ... ...ts because it’s “cheating”. Never cheat the Universe, always be authentic in everything you do – only then will it acknowledge and reward you for your good deeds. Being a nurse is something that involves a lot of care. It’s such a beautiful surprise to find genuinely caring people in this world. You instantly feel the warmth of their hearts and the purity of their minds. Caring, however, is not easy to develop in most people and people tend to either care too much or too little. In some cultures, like Indian culture, caring is not encouraged because of the neediness of people. In other cultures, however, caring is met with gratitude and thankfulness. If you want to open up to caring, you have to ask the Universe to open your heart to it. When you become a caring person, you will gradually have a reliable and good circle of friends who will, too, care for you.
Leo Buscaglia once said, “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” In the field of nursing, this concept could not be illustrated more profoundly. The trait of caring within nursing is arguably the most important trait that a nurse could possess. It can be defined in various ways, but to me, caring is the act of being moved or compelled to action by feelings of compassion, empathy, sympathy, anger, intention, sadness, fear, happiness, protection, enlightenment, or love in light of another human being. There are many aspects to the term “caring”. It is an ever-present shape shifter, swiftly
Caring is the biggest aspect in the nursing field. Aspiring nurses choose to become nurses because they want to care for people in ways that most professions cannot do. Without caring nursing would not be the field it is today. The culture of caring involves intervening programs that help to build caring behaviors among nurses. As nurses become stressed and become down on their life it has shown that caring for oneself before others is key in caring for patients. Lastly, throughout the years many theorists have proven that caring has come from many concepts and ideas that relate directly to ICU nursing.
People appreciate when you feel for them, and feel cared
According to American Nurses Association, Nursing is “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2016). Nursing today has evolved from the days of Florence Nightingale, spreading all over the world nurses have not only provided bedside care but have taken their voice to Congress fighting for policy changes. Nursing to me is about providing dedicated care and compassion to each and every patient I encounter as well as being a patient advocate.
A nurse’s role in our society today is exceptionally significant. Nurses are somewhat idolized and looked to as our everyday “superman”. “The mission of nursing in society is to help individuals, families, and groups to determine and achieve physical, mental, and social potential, and to do so within the challenging context of the environment in which they live and work” (“The Role of a Nurse/Midwife”). Many Americans turn to nurses for delivery of primary health care services and health care education (Whelan). In our country, there is constantly someone in need of health care. There will always be a baby being born or a person dying, someone becoming ill or growing old. Some people due to their physical and/or mental state of health are completely dependent on a nurse and wouldn’t be able to get through the simple obstacles of every day, or achieve the necessary requirements of a simple day without their aid. Not only do nurses help, and assist you when you’re sick, but also act to promote good health to others. They end...
Nursing care is delivered to all clients recognizing that each individual as having different things working together as one unit. Nursing clients can be individuals, family, friends or a community of people. A person is a whole, a biophysical being who is clear and sensible, social, emotional, sexual, and deep down healthy. A person possesses possible ability to discover and give knowledge and skills to others, and to learn, grow, and change. As a clear and sensible being, a person uses their brain to seek out knowledge and truth. In a social setting, a person communicates with others and establishes various roles within society. Emotionally a person is able to offer empathy and compassion in certain situations that bring forth those feelings. Spiritually, a person is always pondering why we are here
The greatest aspect about nursing is that it is never going to be just a job and is even more than a merely profession. Instead, it is a belief system or way of life and not a discipline that can simply be practiced then abandoned to the dictates of a time clock. To simply say that “I love people” or want to “help people get better” does not demonstrate the drive behind this feeling. Articulating my philosophy is not an easy task, to better explain my philosophy of nursing, I am going to use some values that I have learned. These tools truly explain how I feel and what has motivated me to pursue nursing as a career.
“As one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person.” I relate to this quote by Paul Shane Spear because it mirrors how I feel about pursuing a career in nursing. I want to be able to help others as much as I can. Arriving to this career choice was not a simple decision for me. What influenced me most in wanting to be a nurse was helping my grandfather during the past several years, and helping him through different illnesses and surgeries. My grandfather, who I call Papa, lives with me and my immediate family. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to help him because he and I are very close and he is my best friend. Through my involvement in helping him heal from his medical challenges, I was able to come
Nurses not only provide care but they play many other roles. For example, nurses are considered a communicator, teacher/educator, counselor, leader, advocate and collaborator (Taylor, Lillis, Lynn and LeMone. 2015). As a caregiver, nurses provide physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs. In addition, as a caregiver, nurse integrates the roles of communicator, teacher, counselor, leader, researcher, advocate, and collaborator to promote wellness through activities that prevent illness (Taylor et al. 2015). The primary role of a nurse is providing care to patients. One positive behavior a nurse should have is keeping boundaries between work and personal life. If a nurse is having a really bad morning at home, she shouldn’t express her emotions while she is working with patient. The patient and the coworkers don’t need to suffer because a nurse is having a bad day. Another positive quality every nurse should have is good working habits. They should come to work at least half an hour early so they can get organized and prioritize their work before starting the shift. In a health care setting, everyone works as a team. It’s very important to help each other out and also ask for help when
Two concepts at the heart of nursing are comfort and caring. The Meriam Webster dictionary defines comfort as easing grief or trouble, as well as giving hope or strength. The definition of caring is showing or feeling concern for others. Theorists Jean Watson and Katharine Kolcaba seek to enhance nurses understanding of caring and comforting patients through their respective theories. This paper will discuss their theories using a stepwise approach.
Self-care has a very different meaning for people. It varies from person to person and can be based on age, gender, religion, occupation, and their type of lifestyle that they live. For myself, my self-care has changed since starting nursing school and I now know have to look at it in terms of nursing. Although my self-care has not changed substantially I now have to realize that being a nurse, I will have more responsibility’s and will be taking care of others and I cannot take care of others until I take care of myself. Self-care is very important for many reasons; in my opinion a healthy person in mind, body and soul is a happy person. You cannot take care of others if you yourself are not healthy and happy.
“Nursing encompasses an art, a humanistic orientation, a feeling for the value of the individual, and an intuitive sense of ethics, and of the appropriateness of action taken’, said Myrtle Aydelott (Hammarskjold, 2000). Nurses have our patients trust with their lives every day. These patients have needs that must be understood and met, whether; physical, psychological, or emotional. Nurses must provide nonjudgmental care to those in need, regardless of culture, religion, lifestyle choices, financial status, or hues of the human race. To quote Jean Watson, nursing theorist, “I am here to care for others, regardless of where they came from” (Hammarskjold, 2000). I believe that the nursing profession chose me because I have always had a calling to help those in need. Nursing
Caregiving is an essential and very necessary aspect of the medical field. However, caregiving is also one of the most strenuous and stressful positions that exists. The patients require constant supervision, precise care and an extremely high level of patience, tolerance and skill. Eventually, this type of care begins to take a physical, emotional and financial toll on the caregiver. Because of the adverse effects of this profession, the Theory of Caregiver Stress was developed to aid those working in this difficult profession.
According to Kristen Swanson’s theory of caring, caring consists of Knowing, Being with, Doing for, Enabling, and maintaining belief. She believes that the environment and what is in the environment can affect people, either positively or negatively. As a nursing student, I possess the qualities of enabling, doing for, and being with. These qualities are implanted in me via my upbringing, culture, religious belief, and life experience/encounters(my environment). “Enabling” is the nurses’ responsibility to help the make a transition into the unknown.
One can find caring practices in many aspects of human life. Usually parents care for their young children, and children care for their older parents, husbands and wives care for their spouses, etc. In the professional scope, usually healthcare professionals associated with care. The foundation of nursing practice is an idea of caring. “Caring is important for many reasons, but is considered crucial for quality healthcare” (Tanking, 2010, p.3). So, what does caring actually mean?
