For example, to remove unwanted hair from the 14th through the middle of the 17th centuries, women used quicklime...aka that stuff that gangs use to dissolve bodies! It's hard to believe, but being pale has been all the rage throughout history - until this century. And women did everything they could to make their skin a lovely white shade, the things they did too make... ... middle of paper ... ... from the bottom to get to the top. You may not get a great pay packet at the end of the week but knowing that you have made someone happy and made him or her feel amazing is what you would mostly get out of it at the end of the day. 5. For the white consumer, the use of makeup was the major issue; the disreputable view of the painted lady had to be overcome. The black woman had a more complex situation regarding the products being offered. Hair-straightening and skin-lightening products could be viewed as an attempt to seem more white, and use of these products was thus charged with racial overtones within the black community.

It is sad to know that we cohabit a nation where you are frowned upon because of the content of your skin. This documentary depicts adolescent Black/ African American girl and boys, and women talking about their melanin. Society imposed on us that to be beautiful you must be of a fairly light complexion, have a sculpted body, perfect bone structure, and have nice non-kinky hair. This image has been imbedded in our society, and resulted in those in the Black/ African American community feeling as is they are ugly, non lovable, unwanted, not smart, less than, lacking self confidence, and wishing that they can change their skin tone (by bleaching) to be accepted and to be considered beautiful.

The practice of improving the beauty of others may seem insignificant to some but for those in process of studying the cosmetology industry take great pride in the work they hope to produce. Hair stylist and nail technicians improve the way people look and feel about oneself to better improve self confidence; cosmetologist strive to do the best they can to achieve the look that their client may be searching for. However, these techniques must be taught thoroughly and without the proper teaching techniques, the upcoming cosmetologist may feel behind and uncertain about their abilities when performing on clients. Without the proper and professional ways of teaching, the student struggle to ever gain success in the business; this business builds only from the repetition of great work and failing to achieve the overall style of the desired look from the client will result in a failing business. The search of finding a successful and up to date school requires more work than one may assume.

The natural hair movement has contributed to the black panthers movement in the saying “I'm Black and I'm Proud”, if Black panthers can realize the love they have of their features why can't women of the 2000s can
"There is a secret under-life poisoning our freedom; infused with notions of beauty, it is a dark vein of self-hatred, physical obsessions, terror of aging, and dread of lost control." In this quote from Naomi Wolf's The Beauty Myth, the very core of the issue is brought to light by emphasizing the degree to which women feel they need to compete amongst themselves. If you Google "beauty" and go to images, it is no surprise that all of the images contain women in full professional makeup. The vision of beauty has not deviated from the stereotypical sense. Too many women view ugliness as a disease and try to cure it all costs, which equates to the billions spent on health and beauty products every year. A woman, no matter how confident she may

The past centuries’ feminist movement and liberation movement have not completed, and will have to continue for a long time. Compared to the physical liberation, the more important thing for colored people or women is the liberation

This theory can be extended towards the literatures discussed thus far. The gap between the fair skin an individual desires and her actual skin tone is further exaggerated by the advertisements publicized globally. Mass media fenlarges this skin tone tension gap because it is evoking a specific image women "ought" to have. The general message is that pale is more
