At least as important as determining a career path is determining where to receive the education necessary to pursue it. This is a particularly pressing issue in my life, as I am a high school junior and must begin applying for colleges next fall. Many factors come into play when making this decision, and through this paper I intend to explore these factors with the goal of determining which colleges, from the following, would best suit my educational and financial needs: Kansas State University, Oberlin College, and Pratt Institute.
One of the largest factors I must consider in this decision is whether or not a school carries the major or program I need to pursue my career goals. While I do not have a specific career in mind at this time,

I am now looking at three general areas of study that each align with my interests and passions. Writing and Communications, Art and Design, and Social Sciences each have the potential to lead to my ultimate career, and I have yet to determine which path to follow. Each of the colleges listed above contain solid programs in at least one of the areas of study. I am looking at Oberlin specifically for majors including psychology, philosophy, and politics. While at Oberlin, I would also have the opportunity to supplement any of those majors with a writing minor from its English program. Pratt Institute could serve as my place of study for art, design, or writing. This college would be the perfect place if I decide to pursue art directing. Kansas State University offers all of the pathways I am interested in and also has a well-defined Open Option program, which would make K-State the ideal place if I remain undecided. Each program at each respective college will have its own requirements for major completion. Oberlin and Pratt each offer students a broad Liberal Arts and Sciences education as part of any chosen major. Major-specific classes begin freshman year at both of these institutions. The Open Option program at Kansas State starts students with general education classes and classes that pertain to possible major choices by the students. Thus far in high school, I have completed (or will complete by the end of the year) 13 credit hours.
I took these classes intending for them to transfer to my post-secondary education, so it is important that the college I choose accepts these credits. Through browsing each college’s respective website, I determined the requirements and limitations placed on transfer credits at each institution. K-State will accept accept all of my transfer credits, save for Dynamics of Career Planning, as long as I received a letter grade of at least a C. Pratt will accept only six total credits, and only three of them may be in a liberal arts course. Oberlin will accept nine credits, which, although better than Pratt, is still undesirable. I can infer from this information that many other private colleges will limit transfer credits, which is helpful information for if I find other colleges to consider.
Most programs at Pratt require a Master’s Degree to complete. This would ultimately end up costing more and taking more time than obtaining a degree in the same field at each of the other two colleges. If I do end up completing a Master’s program, I would prefer to do it at a different college, solely to experience another place. Ideally, I would only choose to complete a Master’s in order to continue my education because I choose to-- not because I have
to. As far as I can determine from each school’s website, internships are not required for any of my potential majors. However, opportunities will surely be available at least at Pratt and KSU. Both of these colleges are located in urban settings, which are full of businesses and companies looking for interns. Although I dislike society’s dependency on money, I recognize that the cost of attending any college is an important factor. Through researching the costs of attending KSU, Oberlin, and Pratt, I noticed a major difference between the costs of public vs. private colleges. At K-State, I will expect to pay approximately $8,411 in tuition. Meanwhile, Oberlin’s tuition rate is $51,324 and Pratt’s is $46,140. None of these figures include fees, meal plans, residence halls, or book expenses. This essentially eliminates the possibility of attending either Pratt or Oberlin unless I can receive substantial scholarships to lessen the cost. At this point, I can not determine whether I would need continuing education in my career path because I am still narrowing it down. However, it is unlikely I will need it if I pursue art or writing, as these fields are primarily experience based. The best resources for staying up-to-date in these fields are the works of others. This requires trend-watching and predicting patterns. All factors considered, Kansas State University seems to be the best choice for me. However, I will keep exploring and seeing what other opportunities exist. I would like to be able to attend college in a new place, but I am already very familiar with K-State. Before I put too much thought into it, though, I will work towards determining which of my three paths to follow, because this will lead me to my perfect college choice.
I had the opportunity to take the 16 Careers Cluster Inventory. I found the assessment very easy to take. As well, I found the inventory easy to score. My results of the assessment indicated my top three career areas were: 1. Educational and Training, 2. Health Sciences, and 3 had a three way tie between Human Services, Hospitality, and Law enforcement. I found the assessment to be dead on. Based upon the past personality inventories that I have taken I found the suggested areas very appropriate. One of the appealing aspects of the inventory was the easy of taking it! It seemed to gather accurate information without being overly pathological and test-driven.
When I chose to go to Rockville, Montgomery college, I found that they didn 't offer a psychology major. I got upset about the fact that they didn’t have a psychology major. But I soon acknowledged that if I was able to go to the University of Maryland. I would be able to pursue a psychology major. There are reasons to why they might not offer particular majors at a community college such a budget and resources. Since community colleges would be free for people to apply to, it would be harder to transfer to a four-year university. The reason why it would be harder to transfer to a four-year university is because universities will have higher expectations for students. Universities would expect students to have a high GPA, take part in a lot of activities and be in the honor
Cal Poly Pomona is a college that many people want to go to, not just because it has a beautiful campus but because there is a high acceptance rate of 39.3%. Cal Poly Pomona’s mascot is a horse and their college is surrounded by greenery where the college is geographically located. I also know that Cal Poly Pomona is a really big college that provides a major in engineering. I also like this college because it is close to home and I won’t have to pay rent at the college or close to the college. Another thing that really interests me is how beautiful and big the campus is. They also have a really good business program, which I want to major in. Due to the beautiful and big campus, the acceptance
The great American journalist Dan Rather once said “A college degree is the key to realizing the American dream, well worth the financial sacrifice because it is supposed to open the door to a world of opportunity”. One of the hardest decision that goes along with this is where to receive this college degree. In the state of Indiana, there are many great colleges to attend to, but only two really stand above the rest. This is Indiana University (IU) and Purdue University. There are many differences between these two schools including majors offered, their post-graduate programs, the club and organizations offered at both of these schools, academic facilities offered at the schools, and the admission requirements. Both schools are very excellent schools to attend, but it really comes down to what kind of major is wanted to be earned.
What pop up to your mind when considering to choose a college after graduating from a school? One may think first consideration is often the size, and when looking at different colleges or universities because there 's a lot to choose from, you really do need to ask yourself this, Do I want to attend a big college or a small university? There are pros and cons to both. Envisioning yourself at the college of your choice, take the time to think about the pros and cons for yourself.
As the high school chapter is coming to a close, many students have to make a decision that will affect the rest of their lives. Hopefully, for many that decision is to enroll in a college and attain a higher education. However, as tuition costs rise, students have to take a second look at their options for a better future. A community college is that second look for many because it is the less expensive option. From 2007-2009, enrollment for community colleges has increased by 24 percent (“College costs and the CPI”). Students aren’t choosing a college for educational purposes because they are overwhelmed by financial issues. They are attending community colleges so they will be able to graduate with a lower debt. Some seniors have wanted to attend a certain university all their life and they work toward that goal through grade school; however, they are hindered by soaring tuition for that college. Students should be able to attend a private university if they mee...
"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop and look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, '...I can take the next thing that comes along.'...You must do the thing you think you cannot do (Eleanor Roosevelt)." Every time I read these words, I am able to see the truth in them. College to me is the next step that I must take in life. Although this next step comes with much trepidation and apprehension, it is a necessary step that I must take to forever better and prepare myself for the life that I wish to lead. State University would be one of the best institutions for this, just as the choice of high school I made four years ago, Good Counsel, was the next step for me then. During high school, I have grown and changed through not only the education I have gained, but also through the activities I participated in. I have gained a lot of strengths from my time spent in high school. Although every weakness has not been erased, the next step in life will ease their numbers even more.
When I first started looking for potential schools in which felt right for me I didn't exactly know where to start. The many other colleges that I researched didn't have a fashion program and if they did, it strictly was an art school in which i wasn't necessarily comfortable with. My idea for a dream college was a large campus that had enough programs for one to be flexible with and not have to worry if an original major choice didn't end up working out. However I came across some college information that stated that Drexel University has one of the best rankings for their design programs
As a result, I would save of money and gas. Therefore, I choose to attend to Ohio State University. In fact Texas A&M University is one of only 17 institutions in the nation to hold the triple designation, “To be accepted into the University of Texas A&M, you must completed your SAT and your ACT and they require to you score a 1300, and your coursework is rank is 25.” (A degree is great investment consistently recognized as a top value in higher education, based on our combination of academic quality and affordability). Most students complete additional coursework and lab sessions to receive the experience of APT and SAT. DPT must maintain a 3.0 gpa in order to receive the credits accounted for your major. This University is public and they also for you with a tutorial room where you can study and catch up with late work and, also they provide you with special administration that help with anything you may need if you have a any type of
When choosing a college to attend, there are certain factors that the counselor should advise the student on. First, look for a college that has a program compatible to your interest. Second, check out the location of the college you are interested in looking at the community in which it is located in. Third, find out the size of the student population and if it is feasible to succeed in a large population verses small population. Next, research the type of school that you want to attend tax supported, church supported, or private supported as well as what activities are available to the student, the student body, and the campus facilities. The counselor should explain the different schools and make sure that the student knows about accreditation. Finally, the senior must know the admission process and the financial aid resources for the school of interest.
Having a dream university is a difficult thing. You have your eyes on it and just it. It causes one to have zero interest in any other school. Mine was Washington
Academics are very important to me when considering what school to go to. I know UW-La Crosse has many majors and minors that interest me, and are very strong programs. I am interested in the Business and Biology majors, and I know I will be very successful in either program I choose. I also know that
As I reflect and look at my career journey, I realize that I have not really had a career journey. I have held a few jobs; however, I have not had a job I would consider my career yet. Furthermore, I only worked for a couple of months in each of the jobs I had in the past. Currently, I do not have a job yet, and I realize that I am now 24 years of age and should be starting my way to my career. However, I have not looked into jobs in my career field because I feel as though I am not ready yet to start working in my field.
My ideal career would allow me to do something that interests me. I enjoy working with words and with numbers. I've also had success in the areas of technology and customer service.
Business administration and management is my major and my dream job is to be the manager of a big important hotel in Cancun, Mexico. I made a research on the top hotels in the industry because in this field I would be working with people, and it will give me the opportunity to travel different places. The hotel that I would love to work is The Ritz Carlton; this hotel is on the top 10 hotels in Cancun, Mexico. This job is very secure, and it has good earning potential depending on the position and experience on the field. The salary is not the best, because it is in a different country and the economy is different from the United States. The salary is really important to me, but it depends on the job. To me the most important thing is to work based on my career and to live in a place that would enjoy living. After achieving this goal in the future, I plan on having a family. My dream is to achieve these goals, which that will force me to leave this country and make a new life in different place.
