Careers like an actress, a doctor, and a policeman all have responsibilities. The career must have some type of education in order to be successful. In order to achieve in a career there are steps a person must go through to receive want they want. On the other hand, The career of a doctor like Alfred Blalock have a huge responsibility because when a person’s life ends up in the hands of the doctor he has to make the hard and difficult decisions. A doctor career requires earning a doctoral degree in medicine and Alfred Blalock did it. He pursued his career by going to University of Georgia to study medicine, he then became a surgeon. He achieved his achievements by being a hard worker and wanted to continue with school to pursue his career.However, a career of a police officer usually takes place outside and being out in the danger risking their lives trying to protect the people and city. Since the inception of civilization, people have dedicated themselves to certain practices to obtain needed supplies. With the advancement of society, these practices have specialized into roles that society needed and have become jobs and careers. With these jobs and careers, people have struggled to find a difference between the two, if there is one. However, the two are very different. There are a multitude of differences between a job and a career, but the most distinct differences being the necessary skill, and dedication needed.
In 2012 nearly 205,000 people were employed as a physical therapist in the United States. The average salary of a physical therapist in 2012 was $79,860 per year. The number of jobs is estimated to grow 36% from 2012-2022. This job of physical therapy involves many and very important tasks to fulfill the needs of their patients. It requires many different educational requirements and you must have strong people skills.
For the longest time I could not decide on a major and a career to study throughout college. When I came to Georgia Southern University I discovered that they had a major that was very interesting to me. Sport Management id the ideal major for my interest and me. Since I love sports I figured that this would be the career for me. A degree in Sport Management helps to prepare for success in sport related occupations.
There will be a certain point in your life, when you will have to make a major life decision, from buying a car, to buying a house, to what career you want to have. So with looking further into all of the different criminal justice paths I could go down and with my love for science I thought being a forensic scientist would be the perfect job. After I’m done with college, my successful will continue. Regardless my main goal is to just be happy, and never have to struggle for anything. But, when I think about my future the first thing I always think about is the car I want. Which is so odd because I should be thinking about a place to live, and a family maybe first, then a car. But no, I want my all white Cadillac CTS. Depending on what year I get enough money to purchase this perfect car, I’m going to want to the newest year. Just so I can have all the newest interior and the technology. I want to one day, have a family and a decent sized house in a big city. I haven’t really decided yet if I either want to go into the FBI or just work for the local police station wherever I decide to live.
My life experiences thus far bring the best of both worlds to my education and career goals; a student coupled with a variety of life experiences. Being a newly graduated non-traditional student, mother of school-aged children, and experience working with students in the classroom, I bring diversity to your program. Through personal analysis and efforts with other professionals, I have overcome early childhood tragedies. Desiring to make the best use of my experiences by helping others to overcome trauma, and insecure upbringings by conquering these adversities and circumstances positively. Through my example of grit, tenacity, resilience, and perseverance, I hope to offer much to the students in my role as their mentor.
The national career development association (2003) defines career development as the absolute combination of psychological, Sociological, educational and economic factors which influence the significant of work in the total life span of any individual. It is a route through which individuals choose a career path or professional occupation, continue to develop it through their lives and have several major career change as personal needs and interests change.
Coming to the point of my current career choice has been a long road. My idea of what a career is or should be has changed with circumstances and age. According to Weintraub (2005), “the average worker spends only four years in a job and will have 12 jobs in as many as five career fields during his or her working life.” (para. 1) My first career was marriage and motherhood followed by a surprising healthcare career. What the future holds waits to be seen. With a bachelor of science degree in information technology the options are wide open.
As I reflect and look at my career journey, I realize that I have not really had a career journey. I have held a few jobs; however, I have not had a job I would consider my career yet. Furthermore, I only worked for a couple of months in each of the jobs I had in the past. Currently, I do not have a job yet, and I realize that I am now 24 years of age and should be starting my way to my career. However, I have not looked into jobs in my career field because I feel as though I am not ready yet to start working in my field.
I would like to begin this assignment by first stating my career goals; as I move forward with the assignment I will then start my academic goal.
My ultimate goal is to receive my Doctoral degree in social psychology from University of California Berkeley or Stanford University. After receiving my Doctoral degree, I would like to pursue a career in academia by teaching and participating in research. I have also considered a career in research separate from academia, where I would be free to focus on research and less on teaching. My main career goal is to continue to do research and further knowledge in social psychology. The social psychology program at San Francisco State University would help me achieve this goal because they have a strong emphasis on research. Careers are not something to be taken in a light manner as it acts as a major function in every being’s life. Career dysfunctional may results in decreased self confidence, increased interpersonal communication problems or traces of depression. According to Beverly Baskin, the term career can be defined as the the totality of work one does in one’s lifetime. Given this definition, education, family responsibilities, work and leisure activities are inclusive.
Education is not just what your major is, it is also what you learn along the way. It's about learning about life and who you are. All the while becoming specialized so that you may contribute to yourself and society. It's a journey, and for those of us fortunate enough to embark on that journey I hope that we make the most of it.
