“The Industrial Revolution was another of those extraordinary jumps forward in the story of civilization” (Stephen Gardiner). One of the major parts of the industrial process has to do with metal production. Welding has been incorporated into the framework of metalworking. Welding dates back to the middle ages where forge welding processes were used to make tools and weapons, commonly known as blacksmiths. It is known that the Egyptians used forms of welding to make gold tools, jewelry, and decoration. During the 1800’s a new process was formed by using carbon electrodes to form an arc. According to Pickwelder, “This type of welding is used in welding wide varieties of metals and alloys such as magnesium, steel, stainless steel, nickel, copper, aluminum, bronze and many other nonferrous metals” (James). MIG can be used with a number of different metals making it very diverse. This is a good quality as it can bond to any metal with the right settings and welding wire. According to JobsiteUS, “A range of material thicknesses can be welded from thin gauge sheet metal right up to heavier structural plates” (Peter Apalais). MIG welding can weld through all different metals and their thicknesses. This is good for production because this process can do both while some processes can only weld thin or thick metal. According to Coastal Media Brand, “Capable for a variety of applications, including – trailer hitches, auto body repair and restoration, farm/ranch equipment, household projects, repairing wheel barrows, bicycles, etc” (Coastalmedia843) The multivariate MIG has so many possibilities that can be used for nearly anything that involves repair work or production. Some arc welding processes are TIG welding, Stick Welding(SMAW), and MIG welding. TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas welding this means that using tungsten as a electrode and an inert gas, which is usually argon, the weld is produced by creating an arc between the piece being welded and the tungsten electrode. SMAW or stick welding utilizes a stick electrode held in a clamp surrounded by a powdered substance to weld. Mig welding uses a machine that holds a wire feeder within it, the wire feeder feeds the wire electrode through a tube to a gun that slowly sends out the wire as well as a steady flow of inert gas. Oxy- fuel welding is usually called in workplace/trades terms oxy acetylene welding, gas welding and oxy fuel cutting which are all use fuel and oxygen to cut and weld metals together. It all started with the famous chemist Edmund Davy, who is suppose to be considered as the first man to make acetylene. By accident in 1836 Edmund while trying to make potassium created a black compound which was mixed with water create a gas that burned greatly. Edmund wanted to use this gas to make lights but the materials and production would cost to much. Calcium carbide was not identified until 1862. In 1892 calcium carbide was created by accident when trying to create calcium from coal tar when the production reacted with water.
Welders can use hand held welders or even robotic welders to produce welds. Both equally requiring a incredible amount of knowledge. They can also fill holes, produce structures and build custom parts for automotive race shops. Welders often work fulltime on shipyards, oil rigs, and pipelines or anywhere else where a specific job is needed. This can be achieved to a high standard even when using unusual materials, small tube diameters, thick walls, and even within a difficult working environment.
Welding can be traced back to the ancient times. One of the earliest methods of welding is bronze age. when ancient people back then had small gold circular were made by pressured welding lap joined together. Then in the Iron Age the Egyptians and people in the eastern area learned to weld pieces of iron together. In the middle age blacksmithing was developed. Blacksmithing is when you weld a piece of metal and hammering it but it was in the 19 century that welding was invented as they know it today.
GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) is more economic; Springer reports that “ GMAW is an economic process because it has higher speeds and higher deposition rates than manual arc welding. There is also no need to constantly change electrodes” (Page 11). GMAW has a higher speed, which means that you can get the job done faster. It also has high deposition rates which makes the weld look clean and smooth.” This method can be used for a high range of work, but it is not suited for repair work because of it’s weld quality” (Page 4).

In Sparrows Point: Making Steel: the Rise and Ruin of American Industrial Might, Mark Reutter reports that “Four out of every five manufacturing items contained steel and 40 percent of all wage earners owed their livelihood directly or indirectly to the industry.” This steel industry was the central employer during this era.
This revolution brought an enormous wave of success in both economic and technical advancement. The first revolution largely focused on the production of new textiles machinery, improved methods of coal production, iron manufacturing and agricultural techniques. However, by the second industrial revolution, a clustering of industrial inventions centering on steel, railroad and agricultural machinery, thus, a big boom on the industry and economy. Welding is a very important tool used in our daily lives. Welding is the process of joining two metal pieces together by applying heat. A filler helps to make the joint. Everything we use from trucks to houses have some type of welding in them. There are many types of welding careers to choose from. There is a great demand for welders today.
