Within three Puritan works, Rowlandson and Edwards displayed their religious beliefs through their thoughts on God and mankind. One of the many Puritan beliefs was that the bible is the basis of all teaching. Such examples of this are evident in Mary Rowlandson’s work “Captivity”. Even though she was a captive, she still took note of “the wonderful mercy of God” for the simple fact that He “[sent her] a bible” (Rowlandson 67). Feeling lost, the bible brought her back to her faith in a time of need, and enlightened her on the hope that “there was mercy promised again”(67). From then on she looked to the Bible for guidance in times of despair. Reading and absorbing the bible saved her sanity. The next belief the Puritans trusted was that God is both wrathful and all-powerful. Jonathon Edwards professed a sermon that embodies this belief, often using frightening imagery to scare Puritans into confessing their inferiority to the world above. The menacing storm approached as the “black clouds of God’s wrath” hung directly above their heads while the “dreadful storm” neared (Edwards 41). Thoughts on storms frightened the Puritans of God’s anger for all of the sinners who denied their need for reconciliation. The fearsome “wrath of God [was] like great waters” that built up their intensity and waited to be unleashed at the command of God (41).
As an impending threat, His hand lay on the floodgate as their guilt built until they got overwhelmed with feelings of remorse. With the Indians terrorizing the Puritans, the image of God standing in Heaven with His bow bent and “the arrow made ready on the string” waiting to deliver “justice … at [their hearts]” terrified them into repenting for the sins they have committed (41). The warning of a “great furnace of wrath”, “full of fire” and darkness scared the Puritans into confession, self-discipline, and compliance with God. Finally, Puritans believed is that mankind is innately bad and has the natural born tendency to sin. The intimidating thought that nothing lay between humans and hell “but the air” frightened the Puritans into believing in their wickedness as human beings (Edwards 41). The iniquity of human nature made them feel “heavy as lead” because their sins weighed them down and taxed their strength and faith (41). The wrath that rest before them petrified all Puritans into believing that if they ceased prayer they got tossed into a “bottomless pit” of darkness
(42). Puritans quaked as they contemplated the “misery to all eternity” they would have for their sins (42). Only repentance could save them from an eternity of misery and pain. To save themselves from the desolation that sin entailed, they “[made] haste and [escaped]” to not look at God’s wrath “lest they be consumed” (43). If they happened to not escape their sins by confession, the Devil devoured them for the evil of their human nature. In summation, their extreme beliefs shaped them into strict, dull people who were devoid of all pleasure in order to preserve their supposed holiness and purity as God’s favored people.
On February 10, 1675, Mary Rowland was captured in Lancaster, Massachusetts. While being held captive, she narrated her experiences and tried to affirm her Puritan beliefs throughout her survival of being in captivity. She’d rather go with the “ravenous Beasts” than die because she wanted to “declare” of what was happening to her throughout her journey (70). Mary Rowlandson believed God was omniscient, forgiving, and omnipotent and it shaped her perception of the world in an affirmative way throughout all the chaos and suffering.
One of the most cherished doctrines of the Puritans is the well-known weaned affections. From a Puritan perspective, people must learn to wean their way off of “Earthy possessions” in order to dedicate their attention on God. Puritans were preoccupied with the belief that if people invested themselves in Earthy distraction including relationships, they would struggle to find everlasting-spiritual beauty. In both “The Author to Her Book” by Anne Bradstreet as well as the “Prologue” by Edward Taylor, the authors portray themselves in a struggle to be weaned from their affections.
In the 1700’s the Puritans left England for the fear of being persecuted. They moved to America for religious freedom. The Puritans lived from God’s laws. They did not depend as much on material things, and they had a simpler and conservative life. More than a hundred years later, the Puritan’s belief toward their church started to fade away. Some Puritans were not able to recognize their religion any longer, they felt that their congregations had grown too self-satisfied. They left their congregations, and their devotion to God gradually faded away. To rekindle the fervor that the early Puritans had, Jonathan Edwards and other Puritan ministers led a religious revival through New England. Edwards preached intense sermons that awakened his congregation to an awareness of their sins. With Edwards’ sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” he persuades the Puritans to convert back to Puritanism, by utilizing rhetorical strategies such as, imagery, loaded diction, and a threatening and fearful tone.
In “A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson,” Mary Rowlandson, a Puritan mother from Lancaster, Massachusetts, recounts the invasion of her town by Indians in 1676 during “King Philip’s War,” when the Indians attempted to regain their tribal lands. She describes the period of time where she is held under captivity by the Indians, and the dire circumstances under which she lives. During these terrible weeks, Mary Rowlandson deals with the death of her youngest child, the absence of her Christian family and friends, the terrible conditions that she must survive, and her struggle to maintain her faith in God. She also learns how to cope with the Indians amongst whom she lives, which causes her attitude towards them to undergo several changes. At first, she is utterly appalled by their lifestyle and actions, but as time passes she grows dependent upon them, and by the end of her captivity, she almost admires their ability to survive the harshest times with a very minimal amount of possessions and resources. Despite her growing awe of the Indian lifestyle, her attitude towards them always maintains a view that they are the “enemy.”
While suffering from her wound she quotes Psalm 38.5-6 "My wounds stink and are corrupt, I am troubled, I am bowed down greatly, I go mourning all the day long." After which she places leaves on her side and through the blessing of God she is healed and able to travel again. This is significant due to the fact that throughout the whole narrative, Rowlandson is shown to call on God’s word over and over, and in her mind she sees that God is really answering her pleas. If she kept going through scriptures and receiving no answer, along with no encouragement through the word then it is likely she would have fell in despair and might have given up along the way. The Puritan people literally live by the word, their actions and beliefs reflect everything the bible is comprised of. Rowlandson is still able to find appreciation, even during her imprisonment, for the compassion God showed her and the many reassertions of her faith during these
The Puritans didn't have all the luxuries we have today. They were told many things by preachers such as Jonathon Edwards, who lit a candle of fear in their minds. If I was alive to hear Edwards preach, I'd certainly have to question myself. He preached that God holds us in his hands and he can make or break us. If God decides it so, he will let us go and we will fall from his hands to nothing but Hell. Certainly no one wants to go to Hell. So, the Puritans tried to better their lives, and go by rules or "resolutions." They believed if they followed these resolutions, even though their fate was predetermined by God, they could live a life of good and maybe prove they are meant to go to Heaven.
Religion was the foundation of the early Colonial American Puritan writings. Many of the early settlements were comprised of men and women who fled Europe in the face of persecution to come to a new land and worship according to their own will. Their beliefs were stalwartly rooted in the fact that God should be involved with all facets of their lives and constantly worshiped. These Puritans writings focused on their religious foundations related to their exodus from Europe and religions role in their life on the new continent. Their literature helped to proselytize the message of God and focused on hard work and strict adherence to religious principles, thus avoiding eternal damnation. These main themes are evident in the writings of Jonathan Edwards, Cotton Mathers, and John Winthrop. This paper will explore the writings of these three men and how their religious views shaped their literary works, styles, and their historical and political views.

The Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson is a personal account, written by Mary Rowlandson in 1682, of what life in captivity was like. Her narrative of her captivity by Indians became popular in both American and English literature. Mary Rowlandson basically lost everything by an Indian attack on her town Lancaster, Massachusetts in 1675; where she is then held prisoner and spends eleven weeks with the Wampanoag Indians as they travel to safety. What made this piece so popular in both England and America was not only because of the great narrative skill used be Mary Rowlandson, but also the intriguing personality shown by the complicated character who has a struggle in recognizing her identity. The reoccurring idea of food and the word remove, used as metaphors throughout the narrative, could be observed to lead to Mary Rowlandson’s repression of anger, depression, and realization of change throughout her journey and more so at the end of it.

Anne Bradstreet, a prominent author of the puritan era uses many of her simplistic style works to demonstrate her loyalty to God. “Before the Birth of One of Her Children,” “To My Dear and Loving Husband,” and “Here Follows Some verses upon the Burning of Our House” all portray Bradstreet, as well as many other puritan authors’ beliefs of placing their faith of God above all other worries. Specifically, “Here Follows Some verses upon the Burning of Our House” illustrates a prime example of typical puritan style writing. Although a poem, the work is written in plain style which is typical throughout the puritan era. Moreover, Bradstreet continues to demonstrate the extreme, yet common, faith towards God by thanking him while standing among the aftermath of her house fire. Lastly, Bradstreet’s, “Here Follows Some verses upon the Burning of Our House” demonstrates her quality of weaned affections, a trait that all puritans strive for. All of the concepts that Bradstreet presents throughout her poem demonstrate a typical work of the puritan era of writing.
The Puritan imagination was central to the nature of American writing and the captivity narratives. The captivity narratives were very popular and dominated publications towards the end of the 17c. in America. The essential Puritan myth asserts itself in these captivity narratives as the narrative serves as a sermon, a moral lesson, and a revelatory history concerning Calvinist determinism and Puritan exclusions of nature and the "savage" native. John Smith first established the captivity narrative in The General/ Historie of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles (1624} and his accounts of early settlements. General/ Historie narrates Smith's own adventures and exploits with the native indigenous tribes and attempts to justify his actions.
Because of their Puritanical beliefs, it is no surprise that the major theme that runs throughout Mary Rowlandson and Jonathan Edwards’s writings is religion. This aspect of religion is apparent in not only the constant mentions about God himself, but also in the heavy use of biblical scriptures. In their respective writings, Rowlandson and Edwards utilize scripture, but for different purposes; one uses it to convey that good and bad events happen solely because of God’s will, and the other uses it, in one instance, to illustrate how it brought him closer to God, and, in another instance, to justify his harsh claims about God’s powerful wrath.
The story of Mary Rowlandson tells of a much more difficult experience than that of Hannah Duston. Mary Rowlandson narrates her own story so you know of everything she feels and thinks throughout it. However, “The Duston Family” is told by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne paints a picture of the person he thought Hannah Duston was, but, does not know what she was thinking nor feeling when she was going through her journey. This makes it much harder to understand the things she does.
