I have been at Caprock for about four weeks after moving from Highland Park. When I was attending Highland Park High School, I tried my best to get involved with the community and the school. I gained voluntary experience through organizations such as student council, National Juniors Honor Society, and many different sports. Now that I am going back to Fort Benning upon completion of CGSC, leaving my family there was one of the best decisions of my life. It has taught me how to manage my time better; a skill that always needs to be refined. Most of all, it has taught me to deal with and not just overcome, but also learn from failure. As an organizational-level leader, sometimes I will have to make the unpopular decision for the staff, but that decision will always be for the good of them. It may also be a decision on how I am managing the staff’s time. Most of all, it will help me in teaching my subordinates how to deal with and learn from failure. This reflective essay will lay emphasis on one of the learning needs I have developed during my two week taster placement in hospital. Reflection helps an individual build upon their skills and makes room for self-criticism as he or she can contemplate upon actions and make relevant changes (Taylor, 2000). I will be applying the “What”, “So what” and “Now what” model of reflection by Driscoll (2000) in this piece of work because it is a more coherent and comprehensible approach to follow when writing a reflective account and is also an easier guide to writing reflections. The learning need I chose to reflect on from my learning plan is having a better understanding of diabetes and the 6 basic medications used in treating the condition since it is a common illness on the ward I am have been allocated on for my first placement. The timescale set for achieving this objective was by the end of my two week placement that is from 27th January to 9th February and I achieved it with the help of a host of factors. In this assignment, all the names of the patients and wards have been omitted and indicated with letters and numbers for confidentiality reasons as stated in the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code of conduct (2008). The paper will primarily touch on the type 2 diabetes and furthermore on the achievement on my learning need.
Throughout my years attending Woodside, I joined the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). Also, I am planning to go very far in life after high school due to these two important clubs because of the many ways they have helped me as an individual. This year I have served 74 hours for Learner Leadership Council, 27 hours for National Charity League and 17 hours for New Tech High at Coppell. One of my favorite places to volunteer is at Cornerstone Closet where homeless adults come to get needed items and take showers. We get to help them find clothes, and necessities and spend time talking with them. Another organization that I spend a great deal of time serving in the summertime is Metrocrest. We put together the food backpacks for families through the Backpack Summer Hunger Project. These organizations reach out to other organizations and charities and assist with acts of service. Even on campus I have been able to serve others. Being a NTH@C Tour Ambassador has been an important way for me to give back to my school. I enjoy showing others our learning environment and the importance of what happens each day. By attending clubs on campus is also another way that I feel is a pertinent way to serve alongside others and celebrate their passions. I knew my team wouldn’t get far without me being a leader. They liked to win championships, but didn’t have a championship mentality. So, I knew if I stepped up that could all change and we could have undefeated seasons, and go to the championship games and we did. Completing a capstone project has been truly been a figurative capstone to my undergraduate education. Through this experience, I have not only been able to integrate many of my intellectual interests, but I have also learned skill that will help me in my future pursuits in education and a career. I have gained insight on how to work and communicate with other researchers across multiple locations, the general research process, and how to disseminate findings through writing and formal presentations. In addition, I have also acquired skills in new statistical models and computing methods which will be valuable to me in the future.
Raising community awareness to students will teach them the importance of being involved in the community. Students being able to give back to the community will prepare them for their journey to being a positive role model or servant leader.
