“Travel- It leaves you speechless, then turns you into a Storyteller.” (Ibn Battuta) When it comes to traveling what do you think you require the most? Entertainment? Someone who knows the roads like it was their backyard? Or some music? In the Prologue of The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer and translated by Nevill Coghill we are given a brief summary of each one of the characters that travel together and what roles they play in The Canterbury Tales. Geoffrey Chaucer was known as being one of the first to tune his native tongue. Imagine if Chaucer were writing in today’s century, what sort of people would he add to his group? A dignitarian is a very important person who usually has a high amount of power. These sort of people would like a queen, a president, a congressman, a sophisticated person with a bigger amount of power than your daily pilgrim or you could even say a celebrity. This person would be one to consider because not only are they higher on your social and economic list but also are looked up as “societies idol” Like take for example Kim Kardashian. She is idolized mainly for her appearance and the “good” she had impacted our society with. Such as her appearance, hairstyle, makeup tutorials, and apparel. Chaucer could use her to show the common pilgrim what you would want to stray from. Just like the example from the Learn strong lecture of Pard Pro. Learn from others mistakes. She would keep those she was traveling with an example of what society has set for the average person, and give the comedian something else to make fun as well. Already you are able to see the prologue what sort of people and stories will be discussed throughout the tale. Especially how ironic and hypocritical they are to their own character. While some discuss and say that this approach can be dangerous it grabs one attention on how truthful the world really is towards us. That life isn’t just to believe everything you hear, because there is much deception in the world. It doesn’t matter whether the person is a Priest, the president or a common man. As long as it benefits that person they may go to extreme lengths to deceive and trick
