At the edge of a big forest, there lived a witch. She was known as the candy witch. Her house was made out of ginger bread and frosting. The windows were made out of sugar crystals and chocolate ice cream sticks and the roof was made out of chocolate squares. The Candy Witch was feared by all the children!
No one dared go near her home, or set foot in her front yard. They stayed away from her because there was talk that she turned any child that crossed her yard, or entered her home into candy statues!
One day, Lili and Jake, two village kids were playing with Jake’s brand new red bouncy ball.
“Lili, catch!” Jake called, kicking the ball hard to Lili.
But the ball bounced against a tree’s trunk and a rock. Jake and Lili watched with big eyes

as the ball flew through the air and landed right in the center of the Candy Witch’s front yard! “Oh no!” Jake cried, “My ball, we have to go get it!” But before Jake could take a step closer to the witch’s yard, Lili grabbed his arm tightly and shook his head, “We can’t, if the Candy Witch sees us, she’ll turn us into candy statues.” Jake pouted, “But it’s my brand new ball, I can’t leave it there.” Lili shrugged and started to walk away, tugging him along.
But Jake pulled free of Lili’s hand and ran to the witch’s yard.
“Jake, no!” Lili whispered, her eyes growing big with fear.
Jake stopped at the edge of the yard and looked up a candy tree with caramel trunk and branches made out of lollipops. Suddenly, he got a great idea.
“If I climb up this tree and use a branch to reach my ball, the witch will never know I’m here.” Jake thought and with a big smile, started to climb the candy tree.
Once on top, Jake belly crawled to the very tip of a lollipop branch and bend down, his weight making the tree bend over with

him. Lili looked on from the edge of the yard, crossing all her fingers. Jake was so close to his ball, just when he brushed his fingertips over it, the branch started to crack and snap. The tree straightened back p and Jake was flown into the air to land on the Chocolate roof. The chocolate roof bent and broke under Jake’s weight and Jake fell into the witch’s home.
“Jake!” Lili screamed in fear as she ran into the witch’s yard and threw the front door of the candy house open.
Jake landed inside an empty pod. His ball landed on his head and bounced off, only to wake a sleeping cat that looked like it was made out of brownies.
The cat meowed loudly and lipped away, tripping over a magic broom that started crazily sweeping the kitchen.
“What’s all that noise!” called out the Candy Witch.
Jake looked around for a hiding spot as the witch’s steps came closer. He found a pantry open and went into it.
The witch entered the kitchen, carrying a liquorish scarf in her hands. “Who’s there?” she asked.
Jake tried to stay quiet, but a sugary smell was starting to tickle his nose and he felt the urge to sneeze. He couldn’t hold it back and a loud sneeze shook the entire pantry.
“I got you now!” cried the witch, coming towards the pantry.
Jake screamed and ran out, crashing into the witch and sending her head first into a pod full of purple goo.
The witch spat out grape jelly and watched as Jake picked up his red ball and ran out, only to crash into a frightened
Lili. They screamed, making the cat meowed in fear and jump on their heads. The broom got scared and started whacking the cat on his butt. “Freeze!” the witch shouted. Instantly, everyone froze on the spot. The witch climbed out of the pod and asked, “What’s all these?” Jake gulped, “I just wanted my ball, please don’t turn us into candy.” The witch laughed and shook her head, “Turn you into candy? Why would I do that?” Jake and Lili exchanged puzzled looks and told her what the children were saying about her. The witch laughed again, “I would never harm a child.” In that moment, they understood the witch wasn’t evil at all, she just loved candy too much. Handing Jake his ball, the witch asked, “How about I make you a tasty snack before you go?” The children agreed and she made them tasty chocolate chip cookies with chocolate milk. When Jake and Lili left the witch’s home, they promised to tell all the children of the village that she wasn’t a bad witch at all.
They left by the sunrise and managed to make it far from their houses. All went fine until Jake suddenly screamed… He had fell from a steep and hurt his ankle.
