Charles Horetsky’s published book The North-West of Canada: Canada on the Pacific is his personal reflection of his expedition during 1871 and 1872. He traveled areas between Fort Garry and the Howse and Leather Passes in order to complete his observation tasks; the original reason for this expedition was to observe and document the topography of the land for the construction of Canadian Pacific Railroad in order to figure out what route needs an improvement. In The North-West of Canada; Canada on the Pacific where his personal reflection is written, his personal point of view on Canadian Pacific Railway. Furthermore, his serious reflection on future prospects of Canada is indicated, but how he took Indians’ sacrifice for granted in order to achieve prosperity. For instance, Horetzky asserted that “[sacrificing] small and local interests to the general welfare, and choose the Bute Inlet for a terminus, until the great work of binding together the mainland with Vancouver Island shall be accomplished” (195); this sentence is significant since it reflects his negligence of Indians’ rights and welfare in order to accomplish prospection of ‘Canadian’. In addition, in order to construct the best land in the North West and build strong economy. he depicted the problem caused by great amount of snow both ‘without and within the mountains’ (198) and also the route of railway. Horetzky emphasized the ability to communication with the interior of Canada from Vancouver Island and Victoria. Moreover, Horetzky was concerned about resources and he emphasized the need of route that pass the place where people can gather coal, mineral resources, and timber. As one can observe from The North-West of Canada: Canada on the Pacific, he kept explains landscape, nature, and geographical features; he even added an appendix to describe more about topography. Furthermore, he mentioned his photographical works, too. For instance, Horetzky mentioned that he took a photo of the scenery by stating that “[d]uring the interval I photographed the river, which struck me as being very beautiful at this place”. Moreover, he continued to produce descriptive records of the scenery and topography which he explored and mentioned his photographic jobs. Horetzky analyzed and explained detailedly about topography, resources of the land, inhabitants in order to ensure the advantages and challenges of Canadian Pacific Railway’s routes. Horetzky specifically illustrates the topography in Appendix II; for instance, the place with plenty of coals, the part where a valley bends, the exact location and height of mountain, the land where surface is swampy, and an area that is unfitted for permanent stay.
