Can society function without respect? In this era of political, social, and economic uncertainty, respect appears at first glance to be at an all-time low. However, respect can still be found in society, and if anything, has become essential in keeping a semblance of civilized behavior in society. Without respect, society would almost certainly collapse. Oppression, antagonism, and fear would reign supreme. Some would argue that respect in society has long since collapsed, that the leaders in this current era encourage their population to toss away the semblance of respect with their cold-hearted, cruel rhetoric. They argue that the world is too cruel and tough to show respect, that people must either kill or be killed in a world that remains unsympathetic to misery and unhappiness. They argue that humans will never respect each other, that each being must spend every aching hour of consciousness climbing ahead of others. They argue that respect and reverence, to the detriment of cynicism, has led to a weak and decadent society. They could not be farther from the truth. Respect holds together societies. It prevents humans from becoming uncivilized savages with little regard for others. The core premise of respect allows beings to make acquaintances, find friends and even become married. The waiters and waitresses in that restaurant will almost certainly be showing a sense of respect in serving a meal, even if they have no idea who they are serving or whether or not they will see the diner again. They are obligated to show respect: not because the laws of the state force them to, but because they know that respect endures. They know that their respect would most likely be returned through gratitude, appreciation, and respect. Indeed, respect can be seen in most social service jobs, from the smallest family-run restaurants to the largest service
Respect is a such a simple concept and a virtue that should be simple to follow. It means treating other people and animals in a dignified manner. Respect doesn’t mean that people need to hug everyone they come across or hold their opinion higher than everyone elses. Respect means treating others as equals and acknowledging that as human
Proper respect for others begins by a person respecting their self. Respect is developed by expressing honor, leadership, value, and trust in a person. If everyone respects everyone someday, the world will become a seventh heaven. It is important to be respectful for safety, to abide by the law, because children are influenced by their elders’ actions, and because God says so. Motivation from peers can help a person realize there is always room to improve the level of respect a person exhibits. Respect was, is, and always will be a positive attribute for everyone to strive for in their lives.
This lack of respect comes forwards in ways of permission asking, and explaining how something works instead of letting the person learn on their own (Lee, 6-7). She has shown that there are many ways that other cultures have never had to deal with this social problem unlike the West has. Throughout her chapter she explains how the fundamental value in society should be the respect for the individual. This respect is shown through themes such as child rearing, leadership, and work. The basic resolution is to have respect for individual autonomy and therefore have respect for the individual in itself. She states, we can learn from all these other cultures that have individual integrity/autonomy as important parts within their cultures. Another basic resolution that Lee discussed was the way that respect must be kept throughout generations, as long as it keeps being passed down from parent to child, the respect will always remain in the
Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Being respectful is not hard it is simple, just treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
Between my parents and my upbringing in the church, I grew up being taught that respect for others was of the utmost importance, especially respect for those in a higher position than me. Additionally, my job as a taekwondo instructor highly emphasizes the essentiality for respecting others. Therefore, it comes as a shock to me that my score was so low, and I fell in such a low percentile. The results of this assessment motivate me to be more aware of others. Now, and once I get out in the business world, I hope to show all my peers and elders respect. Life is too fragile to show disrespect and sacrifice another's self-esteem, and unfortunately in some cases, another's
respect is as much a part of a man as is his own image. This leads to
If a child doesn’t have respect for people, then they will not be able to get a job, and if they do, they won’t respect what they have and will lose it. If they don’t have respect for school, then they are sure to drop out because they feel they can do without, not knowing the benefits of teaching and learning. If we don’t show our children respect, then generations to come will lose respect for things that we hold dear. That’s why our children need to know that respect is important. Independence is something that comes with time.
In three seperate dictionaries, respect is defined as a regard for or appreciation of the worth or value of someone or something. In my opinion, respect goes far beyond this definition. Respect is the cornerstone of the society in which we live. Although many look at respect as simply treating another person or thing with kindness, this word has many different aspects. For instance, I would not give an elder the same type of respect that I would give my peers or myself. Respect is not considered a neccessity in this world but, I can’t imagine a person getting very far in life without this virtue.
My culture respects the people and the things that deserve it, but with that said, we also don’t give respect to the people who don’t deserve it. We don’t just respect anyone or anything neither, they have to earn that valuable thing that most people don’t have nor give anymore. This is probably one of the biggest differences between my culture and my society because in my society people don’t know the first thing about respect. The way i see it is that it really is a shame of how my society and these people that live in it can’t show even a little bit of respect for someone or something, big or small. Respect is one of the dying characteristics in this world and my culture has the last of it.
Respect is a behavior that shows another person moral and ethical acceptance. Showing respect for another, even when not deserved, is considered to be a good sign of breeding in times past, but now as where society has changed, dissing "show disrespect for" has become more accepted, this behavior suggests a cultural shift from rewarding kindness and self-restraint to applauding a more open expression of hospitality through rudeness. Perhapes there is a lessening of concern over being respectable, along with an increased vigilance oto make sure one is respected.Concludeing that Civility must beging with the individual person making small sacraficiesfor others.
In conclusion respect is wrapped around our day to day lives. A famous philosopher once said “Respect is showing acknowledgement for some ones superiority in a certain field.” You can’t buy, demand, or force people to respect you but you can respect others in order for them to respect you. What people do not understand is that if we use common sense we would be respecting ourselves, respecting others, and respecting property all the time. Respecting yourself, others, and property might not be easy to do but it does have great rewards if you just do it.
People receive respect whether they are privileged or underprivileged; the difference is individuals that are privileged often aren’t receiving genuine respect. People treat privileged individuals with respect because the money says, “I’m better than you”. The money equals power or shows a higher status/position in life and people treat elitist as so with no questions asked. These “special” individuals also have a tendency to show little, if any respect for others, especially when the others look of little importance. It seem that the entitled ones don’t understand that respect should be given in order for it to be received. In actually, people don’t respect the affluent because tha...
My family has always been a priority for me because they always taught me how important it is to respect others. I highly value respect for others as well as myself. Having respect for others is very important at all times in any given situation. Respecting others opinions, beliefs, and values show 's you are acknowledging their feelings and ensures the person they are as important as anyone else. Being able to give someone your respect can also grant you with respect in return. Being respectful can also have an effect on your personality. It can help determine how you interact around others. The quality of respect has components to help others relate if you are a rude person or a kind one. In the late 1800 's John Stuart mill and Jeremy Bentham established a theory of social justice. Utilitarianism theory consists of moral ethics. The action of doing right and treating others equally maximizes utility and brings happiness to most people. Having respect can bring many positive aspects such as happiness, being happy can bring happiness to others around you that is an essential to solving problems that reduces conflict with one another. Having a value that is such a priority in life does not mean that you have to go against what you believe in order to satisfy others. It just helps you on improving on how you see the world and why others might feel the way they do. Respect has taught me not to be selfish and only think
There is a rare respect that everyone in the world possesses, and that is the
The second form of respect is the respect of property. This includes anything from writing on a desk at school to stealing from a department store. Property, whether it is the school's, a company's, a stranger's, or a friends, should always be respected. Respect means taking that extra few seconds to drive the speed limit so as not to hit anyone or anything. It means not smashing a pumpkin at Halloween just for fun. It means not throwing that piece of trash on the ground. That is respect.
