Could fear be a harmful emotion? Fear itself is only a thought, the person has the capability to how they let that thought affect their actions. Fear is not a harmful emotion because it can cause various reactions depending on how the person permits it to influence their actions. The individual themselves, are the only ones that have the ability to control or at least manipulate how that fear is perceived. Fear is an involuntary emotion, it can happen at any time, but that does not necessarily mean that it is harmful. What is could be harmful however, is how this person can either have total control or little to no control at all, and could let that emotion cloud their thoughts and thus allowing a capacity of different circumstances occur. …show more content…
Fear does not have the ability to make someone’s choices or judgments. I believe it is a matter of how a person lets this emotion control their mind. Fear, itself, is very unpredictable, there is no pattern for what can be feared and what cannot. Some people rarely sense the feeling of fear, or rather enjoy it, and others are terrified when they sense this type of emotion. Basically, people can never truly comprehend what the meaning of fear is or know why it’s occurring. In an excerpt from the essay “What Are You So Afraid of ?”, the author states,“ Seems more likely to me, is the possibility that fear is a simply unpredictable rogue impulse that all too remains indifferent to the genuine threats around us. And that may be the scariest thing of all”. Meaning she believes fear is an unpredictable emotion. There is no way that fear, itself, can be determined because there are no specific causes to fear, which is why the author is saying that the unknowingness of fear and the uncertainness is scarier than the genuine emotion itself. That sense of fear can happen at anytime for no particular reason, but there is no way that can determine that something harmful is happen to somebody. When I feel that sense of fear, I acknowledge it, and it heighten my sense of surroundings, but I do not automatically think …show more content…
Fear is merely a thought or a reaction that the body produces to bring awareness to situations of danger. This emotion is more of a survival instinct than it is harmful, though it does have the capacity to affect people’s life long term. Regardless of what the situation is, whether it be an actual instinctive feeling of the need to survive or just simply being scared of something one is not familiar with, fear is still very unpredictable but I don’t believe it can be harmful to the body or to the mind unless someone does not have the ability to control their emotions. The only thing to fear is how much someone is willing or involuntarily letting this fear influence more than they have the ability to control and it does not let one think of anything, except the thing your mind is currently thinking of at that time, it is most when it deteriorating the thinking capacity. More often than not, this emotion pops up in the mind as a sense of protection and survival
In the article "Ten Ways We Get the Odds Wrong", author Maia Szalavitz emphasizes "why worrying about risk is itself risky" (255). While behaving riskily can lead to bad outcomes, having anxiety, being worried, or being afraid of the outcome of some risks can be dangerous to your body both physically and mentally. According to Szalavitz, fear can be one of the scariest things out there. Even President Franklin D. Roosevelt said that the "only thing to fear is fear itself" (FDR's first inaugural address). Both of these sources let the reader know that fear can affect their body's physical and mental well-being. I can attest to this being true through multiple personal experiences.
Human's fears should not be taken lightly. Fear could do anything to one's minds, though without fear, man can be as savage as animals. In the book Lord of the Flies, William Golding presented fear of the unknown to be a powerful force in a man's mind. Fear of the unknown is a powerful force, which can turn to either insight or hysteria. The kids feared of not being rescued off of the island, so they made signal fires on top of the mountain. Then, there and gone, Roger's fear of the old rules he abided to. Also, there were the fears of the beast which confused and isolated the kids from the top of the mountain.
The balance between fear and foresight is a necessary component for an individual to maintain a healthy lifestyle, an imbalance of these components can potentially put people in difficult situations as it relates to their survival. Fear can be a humbling experience when it is not balanced with foresight, the nuances of that particular experience instills a subconscious thought in an individual that resonates with fear, in terms of people realizing their mistakes and making the necessary adjustments in life.
“When you say 'fear of the unknown', that is the definition of fear; fear is the unknown, fear is what you do not know, and it's genetically within us so that we feel safe. We feel scared of the woods because we're not familiar with it, and that keeps you safe.” – M. Night Shyamalan
Have you ever had something ever get to you or make you you scared? That is called fear and tons an tons of people have different fears. Fear is an emotion that makes you feel afraid or something is frighten. Some fears many include spiders, clowns and even death. ‘’Fear Prompts Teens To Act Impulsively’’ by Laura Sanders, ‘’Stress for Success’’ by Alison Pearce, and ‘’And Uncomfortable Bed’’ By Guy Maupassant all explain the idea of fear.
One of the most complex emotions in existence, fear is the primary emotion that triggers any kind of change, as it is capable of linking with any existing emotion to create entirely different lives upon lives. For any change that happens, fear is always present to turn the tide whichever way it pleases.
In confronting any type of learned fear, you must reprogram your inappropriate fight or flight response. This means you must purposely do things that frighten you. When you are scared, an automatic reaction of resistance and anxiety occur. You don’t even have to consciously think about the feeling; it just happens. Your body reacts with an increased heart rate, breathing and muscle tension so you know to defend yourself. This built-in survival mechanism called the “flight or fight” response is hardwired into our DNA. This is why your reaction can occur without you even consciously thinking about.
Fear influences people to make irrational decisions and take extreme measures. Often times, these actions are done to protect one’s reputation. Fear causes people to lie and manipulate to those they care about in order to escape what they are scared of most. Fear of failure has caused higher levels of anxiety, and has made society put blame on each other, rather than owning up to their mistakes. Fear can also cause one to forget one’s true identity and lose one’s values. There are two options that one can take when being faced with a fear: run away from the fear, or go through it and learn a valuable lesson in the end that will make you a stronger person. Fear is a harmful emotion that everyone has to go through in order to succeed.
Fear can be caused by many different things and can be a result of different situations. “Fear is a primary emotion. It is an evolved and adaptive physiological response that occurs automatically in response to particular
In the words of Bertrand Russell, “Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom” (Russell). Fear causes many problems in our lives. Fear influences many of a person’s actions and decisions. However, people usually regret the decisions or actions they made out of fear. Also, these actions and decisions can cause problems for those people in their future. Fear is a harmful emotion, for it clouds people’s judgement, disables them from taking action, and causes them to make decisions that they will regret later.
This paper is focused on how fear as a subject is being perceived by many as a dominant and primitive human emotion. An uncontrollable energy that’s exists and created within every individual, which is directed towards an object or a given situation that does not present an actual danger. The individual then analyzes that the fear is contradictory and thus cannot help the reaction. Gradually, the phobia aims to build up and aggravate as the fear of fear response takes hold. Eventually they distinguish their fear responses as negative, and go out of their way to avoid those reactions. ‘Fear is derived as a basic feeling and therefore created by us – it is not something we have, but something we do. The principle of fear is to keep us safe.’
President Roosevelt once observed, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Nevertheless, people need fear, people love fear and people fear fear for multiple reasons. It fuels society and its decisions in ways that people do not realize. In fact, fear is one of the strongest and most influential emotions people experience. One’s perspective of fear might be vastly different from another, since it provides a unique experience for each human being. Nonetheless, fear, the emotion of darkness, is a weapon that cannot only be used against people by others, but be an obstacle one faces within one’s self.
Fear is an everyday emotion that the human race must face, and it can bring out the best and worst of us, but its how we choose to deal with it that truly defines us.
Fear is a human emotion everyone dislikes. Fear is in every person with no exception. It can be difficult problem to solve. We can overcome our fears by challenging ourselves by analyzing fear and developing a growth mindset.
Fear can have such a powerful grasp on my mind that it will cause me to be consumed with it. Understand that I have the power to control my thoughts. Memorize encouraging quote and when the feelings of fear creep into my mind, I repeat this over and over until it becomes the guiding thought. When I leverage the power of shutting down undesirable thoughts with optimistic statement, I create a gate of opportunity to my self to break out of that dreaded Series of Fear.
