What is the Campus Fire Safety Month and its impact? The Campus Fire Safety Month (CFSM) is an annual nationwide effort that helps to promote fire safety on the campuses. Held every month of September, the awareness program teaches the students residing in on- and off-campus rooms about the possible fire risks. During this campaign, the schools, community, and various experts create awareness about fire hazards, ways to avoid them and how stay safe. Coincidentally, most campus-related fatal fires occur during the months of August and September. CFSM Network The campus fire safety month network comprises of members, sponsors, and affiliates who come together and dedicate their time and resources so as to share information and increase awareness in the on campus and off campus housing facilities. These campaigns help in reducing or preventing fires and fatal fire-related accidents, hence improving the safety and life of the students. Although the campus fire safety month is in usually in the month of September, the network members usually continue to provide and share the information throughout the year. In addition, most of the campaigners usually encourage the students to share the safety information and measures with their friends and peers. Ultimately, the number of fire-related deaths and accidents in the colleges continue to drop and with more effort, it is possible to effectively educate the students so that they can live in fire-safe environments. Creating the awareness among the students helps them on the various ways to avoid fires. If possible students are advised to ensure that all the fire alarms and extinguishers are in working conditions at all times. They should also be careful and alert when using any appliance that is likely to cause a fire and avoid using anything that is prohibited in the rooms. For their safety, the students must know their evacuation procedures or plans as well as the emergency exit locations. They get to learn about how to respond in case there is s fire, the emergency exit locations, and stairways, fire escapes, window exits, as well as where and how to use the fire alarms and fire extinguishers wherever

The Our Lady of Angels school house was a type 3 construction. The school was divided into two wings the north and south wings. The fire started in the basement of the north wing near the boiler room and burned undiscovered in a stairwell until the heat of the fire became too great and broke a window adjacent to the staircase under demolition by fire and caused an influx of new oxygen to fuel the flames. The Worcester cold storage fire that occurred in Worcester Massachusetts on December, 3 1999 provided us with another tragic example to the lurking dangers to the United States fire service. The Worcester fire claimed the lives of 6 firefighters who came to work that morning not realizing that this would be their last shift . The strategic and tactical lessons that were learned from this fire need to be heeded by fire department nationwide. However another important lesson is not as well know. The lesson learned by the Worcester Fire department is that the law is very instrumental to emergency services operations.

The price that society pays for juvenile-set fires is extremely high. Tragically, the lives of the very children setting the fires account for most of the lives that are lost.
The purpose of this CERT IS-317 course was to prepare individuals not part of the professional disasters relief field to help in the event of a disaster. These everyday individuals become part of a team that can aid in preparing their families, neighbors, and coworkers for the threat of a disaster. CERT program participants become familiar with disaster preparedness, fire safety, hazardous chemical awareness, disaster medical operations, terroristic threats, and search and rescue procedures. Following the completion of this course and along with hands-on class room course experience the CERT participants will be valuable aids to professionals during a disaster (CERT Training Manual, 2011).

This type of arson motivated by vandalism is common to many juvenile offenders between 10-14 years of age (Radell Smith, Jan 26, 2010, Yahoo Voices), usually as a result of peer pressure or some type of gang initiation. Most type of arsonists don't typically live very far from where they commit their crimes. Commonly, they know the area really well where arson has been committed.

Arson is one of the oldest crimes recognized throughout the world. It is defined as the intentional and malicious burning of a structure or building (Montaldo). Arson can cost the lives of individuals and the damages can be costly. In 2010, there were about 260,600 fires (“Arson and Intentional Fires,” n.d.). Many of these fires were intentionally set. These fires have resulted in an estimated 390 deaths, 1,340 injuries, and $1.2 billion in damages (“Arson and Intentional Fires,” n.d.). Most of the fires have occurred outside, but most of the deaths, injuries, and losses occurred in structures, particularly in homes (“Arson and Intentional Fires,” n.d.). Arson is considered to be a property crime to law enforcement agencies, despite that the fires created by the arsonist can injure and kill many people. This paper will discuss the history of arson as well as explaining why arson is difficult to prove, why people commit it, and also provides specific case examples and suggestions on what people can do to reduce the risk of arson.
