What is culture? According to Kottak cultures are traditions and customs, transmitted through learning, that form and guide the beliefs and behavior of the people exposed to them. With this definition given when it comes to campus culture I feel that an anthropologist would define it as the way we interact with other people through the environment that we share. When it comes down to campus culture it has to do with the way we interact, behave and follow certain things that are brought forth through the culture of the campus. There are many students on campus that hang around each other and you might start to notice a similarity on the way they act and interact with each other. Because they are around the same kind of environment all the time, they start to become part of that and start doing a lot of the same things that they are surrounded by.
For this paper my main focus will be on the way that campus culture affects the way that students interact with each other and how some students tend to “click” to their own certain group of people. The reason for choosing this topic is because when I am on campus and I look around me I tend to notice the same groups of people with each other all the time. It seems like people like to be surrounded by the same kind of people from their same kind of environment. What this means is that there are people who are quiet who would prefer to be around people who are also quite and not as talkative. Then there are some who like to be around people that they known since high school so basically they like to be around people they’ve known from a very long time ago because they are used to those people. There are many other reasons as to why someone would choose a certain group to be in because th...

...till doesn’t change the culture of the way students interact with each other. In high school you can find most of the time people who hang around the same people and it’s the same in college most people tend to stay around the people that they’ve known the longest as I mentioned before. Most people think that when students leave and go to college they will forget about their friends and not think about them anymore, but I feel that because of culture there are going to be those students that have their friends go to the same college as them.
In all culture is a major factor in the way we interact, share beliefs and act around each other. No matter what culture is always around us and we are surrounded by it all the time. There are times where you can say a certain thing is not because of culture but in reality most things that surrounds us is because of culture.
Colombo explains that “Beginning college can be disconcerting experience” (Colombo, p.1). That there will be more peer pressure from your peers and an increase expectations that you have never faced during your high school days. “In the dorms you may find yourself among people whose backgrounds make them seem foreign and unapproachable” (Colombo, p.1). Colombo also states “If you commute, you may be struggling against a feeling of isolation that you’ve never faced before” (Colombo, p. 1).
One’s culture somewhat affects the way one views others and the world. It is up to the person whether they want to view things with an open new mind or from one’s cultural perspective. A few examples of how culture somewhat affects someone’s view of others and the world can be found in Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri and in “By Any Other Name” in the book Springboard. It depends on what one’s viewpoints are on other cultures and traditions. If someone thinks that their culture is better than any other, then they might approach the world differently than how a someone that is open to new ideas and is willing to make a change.
Culture can differ from society to society, however the way culture impacts humans is pretty much all the same. People are affected by culture from birth to death. The way people speak, walk, eat, learn, and anything else a person does is dictated by the culture they live in. Foreign cultures can be a wonder to people who have never came in contact with a particular society. In many cases one may see a culture that does not coincide with the beliefs of their own as negative or alien, this is known as ethnocentrism. To make sure ethnocentrism is not an issue in sociological research, sociologist go by the idea of cultural relativism, which is known as “...the recognition that social groups and cultures must be studied and understood on their
Culture has a huge impact on our environment. Humans learn to be ethical through culture and family. For example, the racism culture has been brought up through many generations. If our parents or grandparents have a certain belief towards different kinds of people and you are accustomed to that
What is a culture? Culture is anything consisting of a group and system. For example, culture consists of art, literature, humans, history, religion, and so on. There are many various cultures placed worldwide here on Earth. Not every culture is the same. Some cultures today still hunt and gather food like their ancestors before them. Some cultures today are more industrial and focus on progress through the world. Culture has shaped individual groups into what they are and become in the world. Although there are different ways in which culture can shape certain groups, there are a few factors that remain the same.
Culture is an experience, knowledge, values, beliefs, religion, notions of time, spatial relations, attitudes, meanings, concepts of the world, hierarchies, and possessions acquired by a community in the course of generations. Culture is a part of every human being. It does not matter where someone was born or lived. Every single human being is surrounded by culture that effects his or her life. Culture influence our beliefs, expectations, norms and how someone will think and act. Culture also affect every ones mental health in many different ways.
...ame place with an identical culture we would all be the same. Culture does shape everyone because it determines what they believe, how they live their daily life, and most importantly, the kind of person they can be.
No human being is culture free. We are a product of the many different cultures which surround us. Our values, worldview and experiences are structured by the society and culture that exert influences on our lives each day.
There are many different types of cultures and ways people would react in different situations. When a person thinks of the word culture they start to think of races, places, and states. Culture is in fact a lot more than that, culture is a society’s set of unique patterns, behaviors and beliefs (M.A., Lucas, Social Psychology Sociological Perspectives 3rd edition). Culture can be identified in various ways for example, the way you feel about certain situations or how would one person react differently from the way they grew up environmentally or religiously. The way a person was raised environmentally, physically, and spiritually all have an effect on other cultures. The way a person would normally act would no longer act that way due to the actions of the past. Different cultures affect other cultures in almost any way possible.
Anthropologists define the term culture in a variety of ways, but there are certain shared features of the definition that virtually all anthropologists agree on. Culture is a shared, socially transmitted knowledge and behavior. The key features of this definition of culture are as follows. 1) Culture is shared among the members of that particular society or group. Thus, people share a common cultural identity, meaning that they recognize themselves and their culture's traditions as distinct from other people and other traditions. 2) Culture is socially transmitted from others while growing up in a certain environment, group, or society. The transmission of cultural knowledge to the next generation by means of social learning is referred to as enculturation or socialization. 3) Culture profoundly affects the knowledge, actions, and feelings of the people in that particular society or group. This concept is often referred to as cultural knowledge that leads to behavior that is meaningful to others and adaptive to the natural and social environment of that particular culture.
Changing can be the biggest obstacle many student will have to face while attending a University. Students will have to learn how to be on their own, and on top of that learn around what people to associate them self with. In Alfred Lubrano essay “The Shock of Education: How College Corrupts”, he explains how many students struggle with parents and friends while attending college. However, Lubrano goes on to say that depending on cultural ethnicity will determine how the years at college will change a person. Parents have spent about 18 years to mold their children the way they want, but the moment they enter college it seems to deteriorate into pieces, because of all the new material the students are learning.
Before enrolling in this class, I probably had a similarly vague idea of the meaning of these terms and their use. I likely would have defined culture as the foods, dances, clothes, languages, and other obvious aspects of a group of people. The things which immediately come to mind when thinking of the group;
I wondered how I would meet classmates with different ways of thinking, many of them with different ages, customs, nationalities and ways of life. This really was one of my greatest expectations. Nowadays, I have met so many different and wonderful people, willing to support each other in everything, starting over with a primary and a common goal for all, fighting to get the final result, becoming nurses. More than that, we have become good friends that support each other most of the time. In our open spaces we share the experiences that we live in each class, we analyze our weaknesses and we always look for the right solution. Likewise, we talked about family and work issues, and in our spare time, we organize activities to hang out together and rejoice in
Some college students regret not socializing more and meeting new friends. Some tends to stick on their own cliques and are afraid or uncomfortable to meet new people.
Culture, what is it exactly? Many people believe that your culture defines who you are as a person, as well as in society. When in retrospect, culture is something that you have no control over. You are brought up in a certain way that your family has been brought up for generations. No amount of schooling or experience, can help shape or control who you really are as a person. Sure, in your lifetime you can see extraordinary things that might change your view or opinion on certain subjects, but overall, your culture is what defines you. For many people, it is strange and weird to see something out of the ordinary when it comes to doing thing different. For example, what some might consider to be an insult, others might see it as common courtesy. What type of foods that might be deemed as foul and disgusting in one culture, might be seen as an everyday source of nutrition for another. Culture is a part of who we are, and what we believe in, even if sometimes it seems a little crazy. I believe that is comes down to two main things when dealing with culture. One is how you were raised in this world. Two, your religious side or background, and three how it all ties you together as the person you are.
