Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers will be taking on the Denver Broncos this Sunday, in the final game of the NFL season, the Super Bowl. Recently Cam Newton made a statement, “I’m an African-American quarterback that scares people because they haven’t seen nothing that they can compare me to,” Newton said. (Rhoden) This quote has been criticized all of the nation because he thinks people have been racist toward him because the public thinks he celebrates too much with his dances. Cam is celebrated figure in the sports world for his dual-threat quarterback abilities, which means he can run the ball just as well as he can throw the ball. Racism in sports is a very crucial topic dating all the way back to Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Racism is also relevant in the news as well through the Ferguson Missouri crisis. Yes, he celebrates often and sometime can be very arrogant. Cam could be the fourth ever African American quarterback to win the Super Bowl and it would be big for the game itself. Many people will not admit but there may be some people that don’t like Cam Newton just because he is black. According to Cynthia Frisby, an associate professor of Communications at the University of Missouri, she says, "So if you already think blacks are showy or entertainers and then we see Cam dancing, we think that" he’s showing off, Frisby said. "Whereas I can excuse the white player because that doesn’t stand out. (Armour) “This definitely could be the case with Newton and the Green Bay Packers. Robert Livingston, a lecturer at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School found that 91% of the penalties called for unsportsmanlike penalties after touchdowns were given to African Americans in 2010-2011.(Armour) This goes to show that black players were punished more for being more arrogant than the white race. Instructed by the NFL not to use his career to publicize his personal, religious beliefs, Tim Tebow didn't throw a fit. Instead, he became physically involved and active in his cause and community. He's been criticized time and time again, however, he has continued his efforts towards his cause. Others don't agree with him, yet he's not acting out, offending large groups, to try to get his point across. He's putting in hard work to be the change he wants to see.
He broke the color barrier in the NFL (Britannica). Which can allow thousands of talented African Americans to be able to share their talent with others. Now that the protests are going on, Kenny’s name will most likely be mentioned. However, most people don’t know who he is. Kenny’s legacy will be remembered by the NFL and the fans. He is honored at the African American museum in Washington D.C for his outstanding work he had done for the people then and the people now. Most importantly, it will be remembered by the African Americans that are able to play now because of his
Montana’s career statistics lag behind some of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time, but Montana won more championships than QBs such as Bret Favre, John Elway and Peyton Manning. Out of four Super Bowl appearances, Manning only won two. While Manning was under center for Super Bowl 50, he had little impact on the game’s outcome. On the other hand, Montana had a big impact on the outcome in each of his four Super Bowl
Many Americans have seen or at least heard of the movie “Remember the Titans.” The classic film focuses on a school that is blending black and whites and taking on an African American head coach. The coach knows the importance of winning, but also knows the team must work together to get those wins and have respect for every single person in the locker room. Although coach Boone was still put in a tough situation with the school board and the community, he was able to lead his team, with the help of a white assistant coach, to an undefeated season. The team coming together is exactly what America does with sports. Most everybody can come together and enjoy sporting events. By saying “everybody”, that includes all races: white, black, Hispanic, Asian, and so on. Sports are America’s past, present, and
They don’t call Peyton Manning the “Sheriff” for nothing. Peyton Manning also has the name “General” because he runs the show. The team he is playing against better have a good defense or Peyton will destroy them. When Peyton lines up to the line of scrimmage, he immediately finds the weakness. Most people agree that Manning is the player that the next generation of quarterbacks will be compared to.
Odell Beckham Jr. could arguably be the best receiver in the National Football League at the moment. Although he may not be an imposing force as far as size may be concerned, he gains major points for his team, the New York Giants. He is only five feet, eleven inches and 200 pounds of pure, ferocious aggression that is unleashed on
In 2014, this mentality of whites being superior should not exist; however, it does. Recently, a picture comparing Richard Sherman (black) of the Seattle Seahawks to Justin Bieber (white) made its way around social media. Justin Bieber was arrested for drunk driving and possession of marijuana within the same week that Richard Sherman went on an angry rant that lead to him being labeled as a thug. The phrase at the top of the picture read, “Who is the real thug?” Under the picture of Sherman, it listed his accomplishments: 4.2 high school GPA, high scho...
Tim Tebow put on a show for Florida Gators fans in 2007 and won the Heisman trophy, beating out guys like Darren McFadden and Chase Daniel. Just to top it all off, Tim won the Davey O’Brien award for the most outstanding quarterback in the nation. Tim Tebow also was the first and only player in FBS history to rush and pass for 20 touchdowns in both categories. In 2010, Tebow entered the NFL draft with high hopes and once again was blessed to be chosen by the Denver Broncos in the first round (25th) pick. Tebow started in six games and had an average year, but still managed to make a name for himself. As Tim played in the NFL, he glorified Jesus and spoke boldly about his faith. This is why he has had an impact on Colorado’s
Throughout his freshman season in college, Tebow had a bit of a rough year. He was the backup and only attempted 33 passes for 358 yards and 5 touchdowns. Tebow had an outstanding season as he passed for over 3,200 yards and had 32 passing touchdowns. That same season, Tebow won the Heisman Trophy which is awarded to the best overall player that season. The Florida Gators didn’t make it to the National Championship game that year because they lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the South-Eastern Conference (SEC) Championship game. However, Tebow and the Florida

Even though racial discrimination in sports and society in general, are not overt as in the past, racism continues to plague the industry.
