In Francine Prose’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read her purpose is to inform the audience that books presented to high school and college students are not to study the language, words, and value of a text, but to study and bring up discussion on other topics such as racial discrimination and human nature. She does this through the use of long sentences, which are separated by commas and dashes, and appositives. Prose effectively achieves rhetoric because she appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos. Prose appeals to ethos by stating her role in life and displaying a large list of texts in her essay. In the first paragraph she makes sure to state that she is a parent in a long sentence that is divided by many commas and includes an
appositive. This is shown when she states, “I find myself, each September, increasingly appalled by the dismal lists of texts that my sons are doomed to waste a school year reading” (para.1). Prose also appeals to ethos by including many texts, quotes, and lists in the essay. The large amount of research she did adds credibility to her essay. Her research is shown when she says, “In the hope of finding out that my children and my friends’ children were exceptionally unfortunate, I recently collected eighty or so reading lists from high schools around the country” (para.7). Prose’s essay contains a significant amount of credibility because she is a parent and she includes a large amount of researched information in her essay. Prose appeals to pathos by using strong words and tone. Throughout the essay she blatantly displays her dislike towards the teaching of literature to high school and college students. She shows this by using many words that have negative connotations. In the first paragraph alone the words, “appalled,” “doomed,” and “dreariness,” are used, evidently showing her strong feelings towards the books that are suggested. The audience will continue reading because of their curiosity concerning Prose’s display of negative opinions towards the texts high schools and college students are told to read. The strongest element of rhetoric that is present in Prose’s essay is logos. She includes a large amount of quotes and examples in her essay that show how teaching is not focused on language or the understanding of a text, but how it brings up discussion on certain views. This is shown when she states, “A motion passed by the San Francisco Board of Education in March 1998 mandates that “works of literature read in class in grades nine to eleven by each high school student must include works by writers of color’”(para.19). This shows that schools are more concerned about teaching books that have a variety of different races and culture than the literary value of a text. The reasoning for Prose’s dislike towards the reading lists given to high school students is shown through the many pieces of evidence she provides. Therefore, Prose’s essential purpose in I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read is to inform the audience that books presented to high school and college students is merely to enforce ideas onto students, such as racism is bad or those who are mentally disabled are to be looked at as equals. The books required to be read by high school students also doesn’t help in developing a student’s ability to dissect complicated texts, instead it raises a generation that doesn't ask questions, causing them to listen to what they are told without thought to it. Francine Prose effectively achieves rhetoric by appealing to ethos, pathos, and logos through the use of long sentences and appositives.
“Consider the lobster” by David Foster Wallace and “Letters from Birmingham Jail” by MLK Jr. apply rhetoric such as pathos, logos, ethos, and diction in order to create a firm persuasive essay. In Wallace’s article the audience is questioned about the morality behind killing and cooking a lobster, while in MLK’s article we are persuaded to take action about social injustice and inequality. Both authors try to prompt their readers with different types of rhetoric, but together they apply pathos more than ethos and logos.
Haas and Flower created an interesting point when I read “Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning “. In the reading, Haas and Flower, provided multiple propositions to apply, however a key one certainly caught my eye. Haas and Flower proposed various arguments, yet their main idea implied that there needs to be an increase in rhetorical reading. I came to the conclusion that increasing rhetorical reading was their main point due to a statement in the text. “We would like to help extend this constructive, rhetorical view of reading, which we share with others in the field…” [Haas and Flower, 167] the following statement blandly states their intention to spread an important strategy, reading rhetorically, among community.
The author begins his argument by retelling the story of his youth to build his ethos but the results are poor as it presents more questions on how he is a credible source on this argument as his only evidence is his own story. However, through the same means his pathos is built as his anecdote conveys feelings in the audience, making them more willing to listen. Graff finally, gives a call to action to schools to use students’ interests to develop their skills in rhetoric and analysis, which reveals the logic behind his argument. The topic about how students are taught rhetoric and analysis brings interest but with an average argument only built on pathos, a low amount of logos, and questionable ethos it can fall on deaf
Both Chang Rae-Lee and Amy Tan use their articles to illustrate the impact their mothers had on creating a respectable ethos as a writer. Lee and Tan are authentic and true, which are great values instilled by a mother that shine through in their writing. These articles are great examples of how much a writer’s ethos contributes to his/her overall argument. As said by Lee, "Having been raised in an immigrant family,…[one sees] everyday the exacting price and power of language…" (Lee 584).
Brian Doyle’s “Joyas Volardores” explores the life and emotions that come with being alive. This essay, even though it is written about hummingbirds, speaks about the hearts of many. To convey such emotion, Doyle intertwines long, detailed sentences with short and to the point ones all while telling a captivating story. In The Well Crafted Sentence, Nora Bacon describes a “both/and” (10) style of writing that can be used. This manner of writing showcases metaphor filled sentences that are seen as more pleasurable because they are paired with plain style sentences. By beginning his essay with compact, then leading into lengthy and descriptive sentences, Doyle accomplishes a both/and style of writing.
Throughout history, the story of womankind has evolved from struggles to achievements, while some aspects of the lives of women have never changed. Poet Dorianne Laux writes about the female condition, and women’s desire to be married and to have a home and children. She also seems to identify through her poetry with the idea that women tend to idealize the concept of marriage and settling down and she uses her poetry to reach out to the reader who may have similar idyllic views of marriage or the married lifestyle. Though Dorianne Laux’s poem “Bird” reads very simply, it is actually a metaphor for an aspect of this female condition.
As a former slave, bereft of any free will, written words were all but unavailable to Frederick Douglass. Slaves were unable to tell their stories, to expose the dehumanization that their enslavement caused on both sides of the racial rift; so it was necessary for Douglass to fight tooth and nail to obtain the right to learn, and ultimately to narrate his own life story. Amongst the narration, multiple rhetorical strategies are integrated into the text in order to uncover the dehumanizing effect their mistreatment had on slaves during this time. His primary purpose is to educate those who are ignorant of the horrible conditions that slaves lived in and the cruelty that they suffer. He does this through the use of rhetorical devices such as anecdotes, irony and by further connecting to his audience with pathos and ethos. By using his own personal experiences as the subject of his argument, Douglass is able to make a strong and compelling case against slavery; at a time when it was socially unacceptable to do so.

In the text "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" a young black girl is growing up with racism surrounding her. It is very interesting how the author Maya Angelou was there and the way she described every detail with great passion. In the book Maya and Bailey move to a lot of places, which are, Stamps, Arkansas; St. Louis, Missouri; and San Francisco, California. Maya comes threw these places with many thing happening to her and people she knows. She tries to hold onto all the good memories and get rid of the bad but new ones just keep coming. That is why this book is very interesting. It keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

In A Bird in the House, Margaret Laurence is able to incorporate many themes and motifs into her stories such as, war, tragedy, religion, and faith. Another theme that is also shown throughout the book is identity, both national and individual identity. National identity is defined as “ a sense of a nation as a cohesive whole, as represented by distinctive traditions, culture, etc.” (“national identity”), while individual identity is what makes a person unique, it is what a person believes, thinks and feels. Sometimes in life identity gets mixed up and can become a confusing aspect of life. People are a product of their environment, which is a factor in shaping identity. The protagonist in the book, Vanessa MacLeod, witnesses and experiences both types of identity. She sees the influence of the Canadian national identity in her Grandfather Connor, Scottish heritage in her Grandmother MacLeod, Irish heritage in her Uncle Dan, which ultimately influence Vanessa’s personal identity.

As the poem goes on its his own pain suffering and trapped from what he longs for, he beats his wings he wishes so badly to be free the way a bird would feel locked up. As he beats the bars mad hating life left with bruises, he sings to the heavens getting his joy and glee. His prayers and seeing a view of the universe that no white man could at the time. that keeps him humble to understand the little things that aren't so little after all. He knows the feeling of the bird in that cage who sings because he is that black man in society who prays.
