The Berry College Theater Company preformed the risqué, yet Tony award winning play, Cabaret On February 18-28, 2016. Berry’s own Alec Leeseberg instantly became a sensation as his roaring voice perfectly enunciated each foreign syllable in this full length musical, loosely based on the stories of author Christopher Isherwood. Leeseberg assumed the leading role of Emcee, the proprietor of and master of ceremonies for in an infamous fictional nightclub in Berlin, the Kit Kat Club. Cabaret is set in the 1930’s, a devastating era in German society that marks the rise of Nazism. Cliff is introduced to American born Sally Bowles (Annabeth Crittenden), who also resides in the inexpensive boarding house run by Fraulein Schneider (Deanna Cunningham). Sally convinces Cliff to accompany her to the Kit Kat Club where he is exposed to the dark nightlife occurring in the midst of the city. Cliff is infatuated with the sexy Cabaret performer Sally who refuses to change her licentious lifestyle in spite of Cliff’s constant yearning. The Kit Kat Club’s many regular nightly inhabitants include Ernst Ludwig (Connor Wright), who convinces Cliff to carry an unknown suitcase from Paris to Berlin for a hefty monetary reward. Meanwhile Fraulein Schneider, owner of the boarding house Cliff takes up residence in, experiences love drama of her own. I did however perceive a lack of props in the production. Aside from a few well-placed chairs and a simply made microphone on stage, the production did not contain much else in the area of props. I found the performance very exiting and full of intense scenes that aided the play in its progression. The character that stood out the most to me was Emcee who truly captured my full attention with his heavy melodic singing and perfect degree of accent placed on his words. Overall, this play was defiantly a force to be reckoned with. Productions I have seen prior to and subsequently to Cabaret have not left me in the degree of awe and admiration I experienced in this
During the Talladega 500, Cal Naughton Jr., Ricky Bobby's former best friend, pulled ahead of Ricky, allowing him to slingshot around his car and pass Jean Girard. Though Cal and Girard were teammates at Dennit Racing, Cal disregarded this and jeopardized his team's success to aid Ricky in the movie Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. This moment was crucial to Ricky, he having fallen from grace, going from NASCAR's top driver to being let go by Dennit Racing. The love Cal exhibited was a selfless form of love that was centered entirely around Ricky's happiness, not his own. Because of this selflessness, Cal compromised his own agenda, winning for Dennit, and disregarded personal consequence in hopes that Ricky would win the race. If you truly love someone as Cal loved Ricky, you must sometimes compromise your own interests for their benefit.
The film Sunset Boulevard, presented in 1950 is a black and white film. The film is about Norma Desmond an old actress, who has issues accepting that she is becoming old. The main actor in the film is Gloria Swanson, who plays Norma Desmond, an older woman who believes she is still young. Desmond is not content with the fact that Hollywood has replaced her with younger actresses. The next actor Nancy Olson, plays Betty Schaffer who falls in love with Gillis despite being engaged to his friend. The third actor is William Holden who plays as Joe Gillis, who has financial problems and decides to turn himself into a gigolo to earn money. As a student of hers, I am confident in saying that she puts all of her hard work and efforts into her productions. Hard work pays off and thanks to her, the transitions between all scenes especially act two scene three to the finale were a great success. She did a extraordinary job casting the actors and hiring Abby Peterson Murrel as the choreographer. Abby did a fantastic job directing the “Waiters Gallup” there was so much movement and this song/scene that it is easy for it to become a jumbled mess, however she made clean, cut movements that is was a breeze to follow. Rudolph Reisenweber played by Garrett Johnson, the head chef of the overwhelming restaurant, was well placed. We see the first and second cook dressed in completely different outfits making appearances on either side of the stage while other waiters are dancing to songs in the middle. The choreography kept things interesting and the dances in a musical can make or break the performance. Overall, Cherie and Abby did amazing jobs directing each person to have a place among a crowded
The production had many elements which for the most part formed a coalition to further the plot. The characters, the three part scenery and costumes represented well the period of time these people were going through. As far as the performers entering and exiting the stage, it could have been more organized. There were a few times when the performers exited at the wrong times or it seemed so due to the echo of the music. At certain moments the music was slightly loud and drowned the performers. Many of the songs dragged on, so the pacing could have been more effectively executed. Though the music was off at times, the director's decision to have most of the songs performed center sage was a wise one. Also the implementation of actual white characters that were competent in their roles came as a great surprise to the audience and heightened the realism.
Jeunet’s Amelie and Ham’s Tilly enter as outcasts; who long for acceptance and normalcy from the members of their societies. The use of settings in the novel and film are used as a visual representation of Tilly and Amelie’s isolation. Tilly is “detached” at the top of the hill but able to “[see] everything”, just as Amelie is in her high positioned apartment that overlooks the unfairness in Raymond Dufayel and Lucien’s lives. They experience detachment in different ways, with Amelie growing up “deprived of playmates”, never learning the social skills necessary to enter society, and Tilly being isolated, for being “the dangerous one” and sent away from the society at a young age. The movie’s plot is not very intricate, but it really doesn’t need to be. It’s about 2 Men’s Singles Figure Skaters that are the complete opposites of each other. Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) is the notorious bad boy in figure skating, he’s very sexual and all the ladies swoon over him. Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) is the good boy that pays attention to technical detail and precision.

Glenn says Robby should look into the bond market business because that is where the money is. Robby shows his income by having a saving bonds worth $25.00 in 1993. The film Sunset Boulevard directed by Billy Wilder focuses on a struggling screen writer who is hired to rewrite a silent film star’s script leading to a dysfunctional and fatal relationship. Sunset Boulevard is heavily influenced by the history of cinema starting from the 1930s to 1950 when the film was released.
Gordon Hollingshead was involved in the production of The Jazz Singer, the first sound movie. (Thanhouser). He was educated in St. Bernard’s school and he was related to Robert E. Lee. Hollingshead was a photographer in WW1. He also suffered a fire in 1946, but luckily survived. Hollingshead died on July 8, 1952, in Balboa, CA(Thanhouser). Gordon Hollingshead created the first sound movie, he used persistence to innovate ways to overcome being told by critics that The Jazz Singer was going to be a failure, and he illuminated the world by letting people hear sound movies.
Van Daan, Otto’s former partner that he left stay with them in the attic. There was also quintessential minor characters like Miep Gies, who helped hide the Franks and brought them rations and things from the outside, and Albert Dussel, a dentist who later also hid with the Franks and Van Daans. Conflicts such as Mr. Van Daan’s temper and Anne’s rebellious nature kept the group on edge. Many obstacles and complications throughout the time of their hiding made life difficult for the characters. There never was enough food and everyone was always hungry, but when Mr. Van Daan was caught stealing bread he breached the trust of the group. The climax of play was when an officer of the Nazis army came into the room and ushered everyone out. After 2 long years of hiding, there was no happy ending. Unfortunately everyone died or was killed, excluding Otto Frank, who in the end ultimately found Anne’s diary and was able to tell the tale.
Cabaret provides for its audience an animated and a uniquely exciting dramatization of Berlin, Germany just before the Second World War. The story of many Germans living in an uncertain world is shown through just a few characters. Life is a cabaret, or so the famed song goes. After watching "Cabaret," you'll agree to an extent, but also realize how unsettling the assertion is. Taking place in the early 1930s, a portrait of life in decadent Berlin, is both uplifting and grim. Not your typical musical, it is comedic and dramatic, realistic, very tasteful, and ultimately thought provoking.
On a Wednesday night I saw Texas State Theatre and Dance Department's performance of A Chorus Line. The main plot of the musical entails the audition of 17 dancers for several Broadway roles on the chorus line. However, during their auditions the director Zach asks for personal stories of each dancer's life. Though the plot of this musical is seemingly simple in its twist on the traditional audition, it explores themes that reveal the human experience, the search for individuality, and the sense of self.
In the movie ‘The Soloist,’ Nathaniel experienced mostly positive symptoms. Ronald Comer, ‘Fundamentals of Abnormal Psychology, defines positive symptoms as “pathological excesses,” or bizarre additions, to a person’s behavior, thoughts, and emotions, and negative symptoms as a deficit of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Nathaniel Ayers displayed signs of an abundance of excessive thoughts, emotions, and behavior. One example was when he initially met Steve Lopez; Nathaniel was extremely verbose and illustrated symptoms of disorganized and rapid speech patterns. He later expressed deep emotions towards Steve, by revealing to him that he loved him. Nathaniel held the delusion that Steve Lopez was god and this belief dominated his life. There was a scene in the movie where Steve Lopez had received a donated cello for Nathaniel; he told Nathaniel that he would only be allowed to play it if he went to the LAMP community center. For my second media critique, I chose to focus on the 2011 film Bridesmaids. Bridesmaids is a comedy written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, directed by Paul Feig. With grossing almost $300 million worldwide, 44 nominations, and 11 awards won, Bridesmaids has been a relevant film in popular culture over the last three years (“Bridesmaids”).
Analysis of Movie Moulin Rouge In this essay I will be analyzing in depth four scenes from Baz Luhrmann's critically acclaimed Moulin Rouge that was released in 2000. I will be analyzing the opening sequence, the sequence in the Moulin Rouge itself, the two dancing sequences 'Like a Virgin' and 'Tango Roxanne' and the final scenes of the film. Throughout this essay I will be commenting on the filming techniques that Luhrmann uses and what affects these have on the audience, also I will be analyzing how the film is similar and different to typical Hollywood Musicals.
