CYC -- Lead to the future world of software
Abstraction
The CYC (enCYClopedic) project is so far the most ambitious exploration which requires long- term research and has very high risk in the area of software. The CYC project will completely achieve the goal of a general artificial intelligence and finally change the 21st-centry world radically. This paper intends to introduce the basic knowledge as well as the structure and applications of the CYC project.
First, an overview of the CYC project will be demonstrated in order to provide basic knowledge of the concepts involved in CYC. Based upon the introduction, the structure and applications of the project as well as other related topics will be discussed to provide a deeper observation of it. This paper will not give you any implementation detail of the project which is still ongoing research due to its complexity and very vast knowledge base. Rather than a utopian imagination, CYC already makes significant applications in sight in many areas.
Introduction of CYC
CYC is a very large, multi-contextual knowledge base and inference engine. The development of CYC was started at the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation(MCC) during the early 1980s and continued at Cycorp, Inc. On January 1, 1995 at Austin, Texas. Doug Lenat, the former head of the CYC Project at MCC and the president of Cycorp at present, has lead the development of the CYC project from the beginning. The goal of the Cyc project is to break the software brittleness bottleneck once and for all by constructing a foundation of basic common sense knowledge system and semantic substratum of terms, rules, and relations that will enable a variety of knowledge-intensive products and services. ...ing knowledge base to comprehend a wide variety of texts laden with ambiguity and metaphor; information drawn from CYC's readings will augment its concepts and enable further extensions. CYC will also learn by discovery, forming plausible hypotheses about the world and testing them. Like people, CYC will learn at the fringes of what it already knows, and its capacity for education will depend strongly on its existing knowledge.
CYC will eventually succeed in that artificial intelligence and the whole world will be changed in an amazing way. The late Allen Newell, one of the field's founders, likened the coming era to the land of Faery: inanimate objects such as appliances conversing with you, not to mention conversing and coordinating with one another. Unlike the creatures of most fairy stories, though, they will generally be plotting to do people good, not ill.
... in 21th century, and it might already dominate humans’ life. Jastrow predicted computer will be part of human society in the future, and Levy’s real life examples matched Jastrow’s prediction. The computer intelligence that Jastrow mentioned was about imitated human brain and reasoning mechanism. However, according to Levy, computer intelligence nowadays is about developing AI’s own reasoning pattern and handling complicated task from data sets and algorithms, which is nothing like human. From Levy’s view on today’s version of AI technology, Jastrow’s prediction about AI evolution is not going to happen. As computer intelligence does not aim to recreate a human brain, the whole idea of computer substitutes human does not exist. Also, Levy said it is irrelevant to fear AI may control human, as people in today’s society cannot live without computer intelligence.
Adults A Child and Youth Professional (CYC) supports adults in their lives in countless ways. They act as advocates, mentors and teachers to parents that are or have been in difficult situations. Some of these situations are, but not limited to, teaching parents to cook and clean, creating a safe environment for their children that may be involved, and facilitating crisis intervention. As a CYC helping parents and young adults, there are two approaches that are used. The term for the first approach is the surface approach.
...ment chips will constantly be updated to make everyone better and better. After all the improvement we will go through, this will ultimately take away the only thing that makes us humans, flaws. Although, with all the good that these computer chips can do, it can be used for negative purposes, such as mind control, seems like a very probably situation. People can already manipulate others into doing what they want with simple words and images, but just imagine that could happen with 100% certainty by controlling a chip that directly relates the others mental and physical performances of another. In addition the ultimate pursuit for perfection will have people obsessing to be better and better which can destroy any true competition. Cyborgs do have great intentions, but unless used for the sole purpose of medical therapy I believe it will cause more harm than good.
This paper is intended to be an introductory tutorial on the Very Large Knowledge Base (VLKB) called CYC. Described herein is the reasoning for the origination of the CYC project, the intended usefulness of the project (application areas), how CYC is being constructed, and a brief introduction to the supporting tools that have been developed to interact with the CYC knowledge base.
Personally, I don't believe that true artificial intelligence can ever be reached. I believe that a computer can be so advanced that it may appear to be thinking on it's own, but only because a man programmed it to think away. I don't think that a computer can teach itself common sense and the true ability to reason between right and wrong like humans can. And since I believe this, I see no problem in expanding technology and creating online communities as Rheingold and Bruckman would.
First thought in my mind is how can someone want to create something that has the potential to learn on its own. That is a crazy concept because if you can create something that has the ability to adapt and teach itself new things, that has the potential to be a serious threat. In an article from BBC News they mention a quote that was said by Stephen Hawking, “AI could spell the end of human race.” (link 2) Coming from one of the smartest men on this planet that is a scary thing to read. In the movie Ava the AI seems to be a well controlled robot in the begging scenes, but throughout the movie you end up finding out what she is capable of. Something that is robotic and can become smarter over time through experience, is not okay. Think about something that is 10x stronger than you, has no emotions, and also is smarter than you in all aspects of life, and it knows things you don’t. That is basically creating a living monster, the questions of ethics are thrown out the window in my opinion when it comes to AI. “Ex Machina is the only the latest in a never-ending series of entries about the dangers of humans playing god.” (link 3). So there are many negative things about AI’s, but there are other things that they potentially could be beneficial for, like military, security, or even just a simple cook or maid. The only way I ever seeing something like that becoming possible is if, the human that owns it or has full control over the Robot and it can be controlled and can’t advance past a certain stage of intelligence. Having a helping hand around the house or in society that never gets tired and never shouts down can be a huge advantage to the human race. The only negative with that situation is it can take away jobs from society which wouldn’t make people too happy. Overall Ex Machina ends in the way no one sees it ending, Ava the robot tricks everyone in the house even two smart
As our research into science and technology ever increases its seems inevitable that in the near future Artificial Intelligent machines will exist and become part of our everyday life such as we see with modern computers today.
Pop culture has explored this idea and gave fictional tales of what can happen if artificial intelligence “goes bad”. While it may not be a credible source, it still has room for interpretation. Allowing robotics what is arguably the most influential trait today, a mind, is a frightening thought. Researching the human mind is still a field of study today and is not fully understood. How can scientists and researchers behind artificial intelligence accurately come up with how the human mind interacts with itself and its surroundings? Yes, they can start with the ability to learn, such as a path of an infant absorbing knowledge through its adolescence, but what if the expansion of information becomes exponential? The artificial intelligence may gain full control and depth of their mind and comprehend the world differently as humans do. This brings the artificial intelligence to a cognitive and spiritual level beyond that of the human mind. If this were to happen humans cannot be able to understand the artificial intelligence. They have programmed it to learn itself, its mind, and how to operate. What level is that beyond a human mind, a god? At one point researchers that developed the artificial intelligence had a grasp and outlook for their technology’s lifespan. What they thought the artificial intelligence may derive from its programming, has transformed into something completely dissimilar. The artificial

Whether or not A.I. does replace mankind one should not dismiss that this rapidly approaching technological singularity phenomena is reality. Great change has happened, is happening, and will continue to happen as long as the ability to learn exists, organic or artificial. So when humanity reaches its climax and does end, it is known that it is not the end of knowledge, it is a new direction towards knowledge.
Artificial intelligence has become a big controversy between scientists within the past few years. Will artificial intelligence improve our communities in ways we humans can’t, or will they just cause danger to us? I believe that artificial intelligence will only bring harm to our communities. There are multiple reasons why artificial intelligence will bring danger to humanity, some of them being: you can’t trust them, they will lead to more unemployment, and they will cause more obesity.
“When the world ends, it may not be by fire or ice or an evil robot overlord. Our demise may come at the hands of a superintelligence that just wants more paper clips.” When you hear the term Artificial Intelligence, what is the first thing to come to your mind? Perhaps the Disney movie Smart House? Or maybe you think of a dystopian future of human-like robots taking over the world. Artificial Intelligence is around us in our everyday lives. But the future of AI technology triggers fears in many people, including scientists. Although artificial intelligence serves its purpose of helpfulness, it poses a threat to humanity as it continues to develop and revolutionize.
At the 4th semester of my studies, me and my team awarded with the jury's special prize at the IBM Software Academy (2012). Our project was to create a system that can i...
Recently, the media has spent an increasing amount of broadcast time on new technology. The focus of high-tech media has been aimed at the flurry of advances concerning artificial intelligence (AI). What is artificial intelligence and what is the media talking about? Are these technologies beneficial to our society or potential threats? Medical facilities, police departments, and manufacturing plants have all been changed by AI. Will machine language and artificial neural network replace humans in the future?
With all of the progress, you have to wonder, how this intelligence will affect human lives in the long haul. Many argue it will be an end of the human race scenario where AI takes over the planet. A vast amount also believe it will take us into the future where there are less diseases and technology to help us take the next step into human evolution. Personally, the future may not be apocalyptic but evidence certainly steers me into believing the future will be darker for considerable amount of the
