The topic of the thesis I am going to be reviewing is what the title suggests, the effects that bye weeks have on a team’s performance within the NFL. The idea of this topic originally spanned from a Reddit conversation I was involved in that discussed the advantages teams have due to the disparity in their strengths of schedule. NFL scheduling is not due to any random process but rather it is carefully pre-determined months in advance by executives and analysts within the NFL organization in order to maximize their revenues by having games scheduled at times that maximizing the amount of people who are appeased and minimizing the amount of people who are displeased. It can be inferred that the teams with weaker schedules have a greater likelihood …show more content…
At the time of the project proposal, Hurricane Irma had just occurred and the week 1 game between the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers had to be cancelled due to weather conditions. Thus, they will be forced to play for 16 straight weeks as opposed to the rest of the NFL having bye weeks between weeks 4 and 10. I sought to research what sort of repercussions those two teams will face as a result of their 16 straight weeks of play. The Master’s thesis I am reviewing covers the effects of bye weeks on in a very comprehensive manner. The introduction of the paper touched upon the process of scheduling within the NFL and the history of bye weeks within the NFL. The bye week system was implemented in 1990, when the season was prolonged to 17 weeks while the total number of games played remained at 16. In 1993, the NFL experimented with a 2 week bye system which was subsequently reverted back to 1 week the following year. Aside from a few years, bye weeks occurred between …show more content…
Older teams are able to get more benefit from bye weeks than younger teams. “Bad” teams get greater benefit than “good” teams. A bye week team going into a non-division match gets much greater benefit than a bye week team going into a divisional match. Finally, there is no evidence to suggest that there is an optimal time to have a bye week. From this author’s manipulation of variables to improve his R-squared, I learned of the importance of manipulating variables to increase their predictive strength and omitting ones that are simply not helpful to the model. I also learned of the importance to think outside the box when considering implications of a study. Even though this was a study within the NFL, the results from here have a broad scope that extends far beyond the NFL, this study could have implications on the effects of rest on all facets of a person’s
The current length of the college football season with the Bowl Championship Series system is about twelve to thirteen games in 4 month spend. A team would only play one bowl game after the regular season. No added travel expenses, uncertain schedules, or missed c...
Intro: In 1946 two members of the New York Giants were found associating with gamblers, trying to fix the NFL Championship Game. These members were suspended and in 1947 the NFL introduced their form of prevention, the injury report (Merritt). Every week, NFL coaches have to list their injured players on the NFL Injury Report. Each player has to be listed as either “doubtful,” “questionable,” or “probable” to play that weekend.
The winning that the Steelers have done in the past forty-three seasons has been remarkable. Information gathered from "Pittsburgh Steelers Team Encyclopedia” has shown that the Steelers have had a winning season
An argument can be based on whether or not the NFL should be held liable when players know what a violent sport they participate in. The NFL is 10 Billion dollar a year business and the majority of their income are made through the exploitation of their players (Grove, J 760). The argument can be made that players should seek compensation for injuries because salaries for injured players are not guaranteed beyond the season in which the injury is sustained (Grove, J 760). It has been posed as whether or not the government should step in to help regulate owed compensation. One way the state or federal government can intervene and impose legislative act...
While college sports play a valuable role on university campuses, it is important for administrators to not lose perspective. That some football coaches earn more than university presidents, for example, is clearly wrong. Essay Task Write a unified, coherent essay in which you evaluate multiple perspectives on college support for sports teams. In your essay, be sure to: • analyze and evaluate the perspectives given • state and develop your own perspective on the issue • explain the relationship between your perspective and those given
Business deals happen every day; Contracts expire, renew, and are negotiated without the public knowing for many large corporations and even sporting leagues. However, some contract changes cannot escape the media’s attention. The National Football League (NFL) is facing an expiration of its Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) (NFL Lockout Now One Month Old). Currently, the agreement has expired and NFL team owners have selfishly chosen to “lock” the players out. The term lockout means that the players are essentially not allowed to participate in any team activities or duties until the owner’s rescind this lockout. While many believe this is simply a battle between team owners and a player union, it can only appear to most as a selfish act of the NFL owners trying to rich, greedy men in expensive suits, and the only people they are hurting, are the fans of football.
...l playoffs should be expanded from 4 teams to 8 teams because: it gives more teams a chance to compete, it makes the schools more money for school funds, and it gets the players more NFL attention and more help. These players are trying to make a career out of what they love the most and that is football. By expanding the playoffs they will have a better and longer career. Also schools will be able to buy more supplies, hire more teachers, or do whatever they want with the money the playoffs will make them. The 8 team system will really benefit the smaller less hyped and less well known schools because the 8 team system should allow a small school or 2 in every year and so that would help their players receive more attention. So I ask you this question again: Wouldn’t it be easier to pick your favorite 8 types of candy instead of just your favorite 4 types of candy?

In sports, the best athletes are the individuals that give each team a chance to win every game. The bad news for the best athletes is that sometimes their health gets put second to their abilities. Roughly 1.8 to 3.6 million sports related concussions happen each year (Concussion Statistics). Stronger and faster athletes as well as more impact of the hits or falls have doubled the number of concussions in a decade (Concussion Statistics). Concussions can happen to every athlete, but when it happens to the star athletes, it is different. Schools have to follow direct concussion safety laws, but professional sports have more leniencies (Get). Wins are more important in the professional leagues compared to the high school and amateur levels. Wins lead to the coveted playoffs. The playoffs can lead to an even more coveted championship. During the playoffs, the games are shown on national television, seen by millions of fans. In the games, players can shine in the national spotlight. If an athlete performs well that individual can be paid more money in the future. If the coaches win their respective divisions, conferences, make the playoffs, make the championship game, or win the championship, it all leads to a higher pay for the coach. It also leads to more money for the team and city as well. Winning means so much in the professional leagues. But is it really win at all costs? As much as I personally love sports with a passion, I would prefer each player get fully recovered and then come back, rather than rush back still not at one hundred percent. I want my favorite players to play for a long time not for short stints between each injury. The player’s health is way more important to me then the championship. Rushing players back in...
From the first two national champions, Rutgers and Princeton, to last year’s debateable Auburn national championship winning team, college football has always had difficulties deciding national champions. The BCS National Championship game was thought to give a less prejudice opinion on which teams play in the championship game than humans did. However, it has stimulated more controversy in college sports than Cal-Stanford “The Play.” The problem with the BCS teams is, it chooses two teams that are based on profit, popularity, and record. The BCS is in need of replacement by a playoff system because with a playoff system college football teams have more of an opportunity to show themselves.
