For years corporations have been depleting the oceans of its wildlife for our benefit. However, one thing these corporations tend to not mention is the bycatch they encounter when catching fish for the purpose of consumption. The definition of bycatch “is the unintended capture of nontarget animals…”(Crowder and Murawski pg.1). Bycatch takes a negative toll on our ocean ecosystem that cannot be reversed.
Why does bycatch occur? To start many of the modern fishing gear used today are not very selective because most fishermen would like to catch lots of fish not just one specific type. This means fishing gear has to be large and cover lots of areas without being selective. There are also reports of devices that have been made to stop bycatch of a certain type of specie, like the turtle, but they are not always used due to lack of enforcement or political will (Rayment paragraph 3). This shows that even though there are measures being taken to prevent bycatch, sometimes they do not always work because of other hidden agendas. Another reason that affects fishermen is that, “Some policies actually create incentives to discard …show more content…

To give an overview of how much bycatch actually occurs, “ Approximately 27 million metric tons (30 million tons) of bycatch are discarded each year in the world's commercial fisheries, compared to a total of about 77 million metric tons (85 million tons) of landed catch.”(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration pg.1). More often than not when a creature is caught via bycatch it is already dead by the time it is thrown back into the ocean. Bycatch does not affect a single type of species in fact, “Bycatch discarding of at least 149 species or species groups occurs in these fisheries; many of these species are bycatch in several different fisheries.” (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration pg.1 ). These statistics only show part of the real issue with
