By the Waters of Babylon and Planet of the Apes Comparitive Essay
The short story by the waters of Babylon and the movie planet of the apes were both futuristic stories. They also both showed the evil sides of today’s man and the chaos and mass destruction that we are capable of accomplishing. They portrayed today’s man as selfish, violent, and full of hate and rage. By the waters of Babylon was written from the point of view of a boy close to becoming a man who knew nothing of his past civilization. Whereas in the movie planet of the apes it was from the point of view of a man that had come nearly directly from that past civilization. The main people in charge keep knowledge from the public so they do not know the evils that they are capable of as to protect them from making the same mistake.
In both stories our present civilization had destroyed the earth, as we now know it and had killed most of the humans. The cause of these catastrophes in both stories was suspected to be from nuclear war. These places were the nuclear bombs had supposably hit could not grow food and had no signs of life and were called the forbidden zones. The main people in charge did not allow people to go into these so-called forbidden places. In the story by the waters of Babylon the people in charge were called the high priests. In the movie the planet of the apes the main people in charge were the elder apes and Dr. Zayus. In both stories their reasons for having the forbidden zones were similar they wanted to hide the past from them so they do not do it again. One last strange similarity is that they both took place in New York City or in that area.
In by the waters of Babylon the main character and narrator was a boy on the verge of manhood. He was in a culture that resembled that of medieval times. Their culture had many tales, stories, good spirits, evil spirits, and magic. He was the son of a high priest, he called himself John. High priests made up the rules, purified evil objects and knew everything about everything.
As the high priest’s son he himself wanted to become a good priest but to become one he had to look at the place of gods with his own eyes.
In the book Alas, Babylon, the author, Pat Frank, discusses the condition of the human race. Mainly, his view differs from others because rather than write about the countries in a nuclear war, he writes about people living in the countries that are involved in that war. His discusses these peoples’ progress, both technological and moral, as well as their use of power. These topics make the book as intriguing as it is to read.
In life, one must realize that it is impossible to be perfect and so there are always going to be things that one will regret. Modernist author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, in his short story, "Babylon Revisited", tells the story of a man who has made many mistakes in his life and is living with these regrets and trying desperately to bring his life back together. In the story, Fitzgerald draws heavily upon the current events of the world he is living in and uses the present to depict the past.
He thought of priests as superheroes and he would often pretend to be one at home. Andre’s parents, sister, friends, and extended family always knew of his desires to become a priest and these desires only blossomed as he grew older. And even though his life took little a turn at the age of seven, when his father passed away from cancer at the young age of thirty-nine, his beliefs only grew deeper. This was a hard grieving period for both him and the rest of his family; however, through their faith life they were able to transform this pain into a deeper reality of understanding Heaven and who Jesus was. Another influence on Andre’s vocation choice was his childhood priest. As he stated “Praise God I had a good priest growing up because he was a great inspiration.” This particular priest showed him an example of a real authentic and love filled priesthood. These are just some of the numerous examples of hopelessness, individualism, enlightened self- interest, compassion, hope, love, free will, relationships, sin, and images of God that are seen consistently throughout the movie. Although a comedy, Bruce Almighty is a movie with a plot of God’s omnipotence painted in bold colors.
The main character in the novel is Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh is a character who is very self-confident. He feels that he is superior to others, due to the fact that he is two-thirds god, and one-third man. This arrogance leads to his being cruel at the beginning of the story. Gilgamesh is described as, ãtwo-thirds of him divine, one-third human... Gilgamesh does not allow the son to go with his father; day and night he oppresses the weak... Gilgamesh does not let the young woman go to her mother, the girl to the warrior, the bride to the young groomä (tablet I, column ii, 1, 12-13, 27-28). Gilgamesh is a man with no equal, so he feels superior.
After reading Milton’s Lost Paradise and The Book of Genesis, I noticed some similarities and many differences. Although many of the characters names and personalities were similar, the viewpoints in which these stories were written differed. For example, In Milton’s lost paradise the reader is able to actually see what the characters are thinking and their reasons for doing things, whereas in The Book of Genesis the characters actions are unpredictable. Another difference I noticed was in the Bible the source of sin begins straight from the birth of Eve and the reasons for the creation of man and woman. While in Milton’s Lost Paradise the author starts from the establishment of Satan “Who first seduc'd them to that foul revolt? Th' infernal Serpent; he it was, whose guile Stird up with Envy and Revenge, deceiv'd , The Mother of Mankind, what time his Pride Had cast him out from Heav'n, with all his Host Of Rebel Angels” (33-38). The author is referencing the source of sin to Satan, “Milton accepts, and insists on the challenge that the fall must be made believable—and acceptable—by a dramatic representation addressed to the human reasoning” (Bowers 264-273). These two stories illustrate humanity and God’s formation of earth but in contrastive ways.
Carter G. Woodson, the father of Black History once wrote, “If you can control a man's thinking you do not have to worry about his action. When you determine what a man shall think you do not have to concern yourself about what he will do”. During the 19th and early 20th centuries segregation in American public schools was part of the norm and many black schools were inferior to white schools. In the early 1950s, Brown v. Board of Education, a poignant case in the fight for the desegregation of schools was presented to the U.S District Court for the District of Kansas. The defense ruled that “segregated schools simply prepared black children for the segregation they would face during adulthood.” After great deliberation, the court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs banishing the “separate but equal” rule, making it unethical to allow segregation in public schools. Desegregation did not integrate the schools, instead it removed the educational curricula for schools, paralyzing the educational system and victimizing children both black and white. This desegregation created a new kind of segregation, one that will determine the future of young minds and undermine the ability of minority children branding them average or low-achieving. In the struggle for quality education, school professionals and experts limit educational progressiveness using tracking and no child left behind.
The code of Hammurabi was one of the most important documents in Babylon history. It was adopted from many Sumerian customs that had been around for a while before the Babylonians. Though many of the Laws were adopted from Sumeria they were published by Hammurabi and thus known as the code of Hammurabi. This code had four main parts to it. They were: Civil Laws, Commercial Laws, Penal Laws, and the Law of procedures.
The research done in 2005 revealed that the Black American students who studied at white dominated schools were very low than in any year since 1968 (Thomas 57).” According to Thomas (102), many factors contributed to rapid re-segregation of schools since 1991. The court turned against the desegregation plan adopted earlier by denying new petitions to desegregate schools, the executive arm reduced the initiatives to enforce the Civil Rights Act and Brown right that was so successful in the 1970s (Donnor and Dixson 2013).
Though not a film to be taken too seriously, this movie has the power to whisk audience members away for 2 hours, into a world in which the bad guys finish last and the power of good conquers evil.
The Old Man and the Sea is a heroic tale of man’s strength pitted against forces he cannot control. It is a tale about an old Cuban fisherman and his three-day battle with a giant Marlin. Through the use of three prominent themes; friendship, bravery, and Christianity; the “Old Man and the Sea” strives to teach important life lessons to the reader.

Robert Browning established some great works in the 18th century his poems had dramatic verses and a dramatic style. Browning took off very slowly but when he did he became very noticed in the English society and his hard work eventually took off and got noticed also. Browning symbolizes the dramatic monologue like for example, in his poem ‘’my last duchess’’ he gave out conclusions through his characters actions. Browning was influenced by many other poets and events that took place in the 18th century. To begin, my author is named Robert browning and he was born on May 7th, 1812 in Camberwell, England. Browning is a middle class suburb of London he was the first born of his parents and the only boy he had one sister named Sarianna Browning. His mom was a good Christian and a pianist while his father worked as a clerk at a bank. His father was an also an artist, scholar and collector of books. Most of browning education came from his father because he was very smart when Browning turned 5 he was already proficient at reading and writing. Browning was very much influenced by Percy Shelley poetry and by his 13th birthday he wanted the rest of his works. Browning was very intelligent; he knew French, Greek, and Latin by the age of fourteen. Browning got homeschooled between the ages 14-16 by many different tutors for music, writing, and horsemanship. He wrote poems between the ages thirteen and twenty Browning wrote a volume of Byronic verse called ‘’incondita’’.
