Why Purchasing Locally Sourced Food is Important It is important to do the math before purchasing goods and services; knowing the price of an item is not the only thing to consider when spending food dollars. Just as crucial as the price of a product is the importance of purchasing locally sourced food. Buying locally sourced is important because it tastes better, locally grown food has a higher nutritional value, and purchasing locally sourced food has benefits to the local economy.
Buying food locally has many benefits. Locally sourced food tastes better because local farmers pick their crops when they are ripe. Local farmers know that picking fruits and vegetables at the peak of freshness and selling directly to their customers allows the customer to enjoy the best flavors. Having only hours between the time that food is picked from the field and when the customer puts it on the table to eat guarantees the food does not lose nutritional value. Additionally, buying locally sourced food is beneficial to the local economy. When a local farmer takes, the money earned from selling crops and spends it in local businesses or reinvests in their own farm, it keeps more people employed. James E. Mcwilliams stated his aversion to the locavore movement in his essay “The Locavore Myth: Why Buying from Nearby Farmers Won’t Save the Planet”. The locavore movement is the concept of buying produce, meat, and other farm-grown food locally as opposed to having your vegetables or fruits shipped from across the world. This notion believes going local reduces harm to the environment by decreasing the miles food needs to travel before landing on your plate. From the title of his essay itself, the claim would seem obvious. The locavore movement does not essentially help save the environment through lessened food mileage. Don’t be easily swayed, in short. Have you ever considered what is in the food you are feeding your children? Most foods that are bought at the neighborhood grocery stores are considered global foods which are packed with additives and chemicals making them far less nutritious than local produce from the community farmer‘s market. After much research, I have concluded that it is better to buy produce which is grown locally rather than produce which is sourced globally (from other countries). I think this is important because most people, like myself, buy global foods and do not realize how much better local foods are for the local economy, the global environment, and our personal nutrition. Nutrition is vital to the healthy of everyone especially children, so with the purchase of local fresh produce, it can ease the worry in parents of what children as well as ourselves are ingesting. Produce grown locally are healthier for toddlers because they contain more nutrition in the foods, meaning less additives and a better taste, helping them properly develop.
Locally grown food is food that was grown within 100 miles of where it is being sold. Many people believe locally grown food is better than conventionally grown food because local food is healthier than conventionally grown food.
