I am currently enrolled in the Business Administration with an Emphasis in Business Intelligence program for the College of Business at GCU. I chose this program as I have work experience with both business administration and intelligence and would like to sharpen my skills while earning a degree to accommodate my knowledge. The course topics touch on management, database structure, accounting, finance, business analytics, and marketing.
The program includes courses such as Introduction to Management, Business Programming, Web Analytics and Introduction to Computer Technology. Introduction to Management will be more of a review of the basic functions of management as I worked in the management capacity for many years. Understanding how to develop customized software component using business analytics will be communicated in the Business Programming course. I fear these courses will be very challenging for me as I have not worked with complex mathematics in many years. Prior to entering into these courses, I will utilize the Math Success Booster and MathXL in the Student Success Center to refresh and improve my mathematic knowledge foundation. I will also utilize the tutoring available through the Center for Learning Advancement (CLA) as needed.
The course assignments of the online program in addition to the mathematic based classes will contain large amounts of writing; therefore, strong communication skills as well as computer skills are a must. I will heavily rely on the Writing Center to adhere to all writing style guidelines. I will also continue to exploit the many GCU tutorials and webinars as well as the Technology Success Boosters also in the Student Success

i feel as is the writing center is a great resource for writing materials. Not all of the tutors was helping as i thought it will be. My experience an educational assistant has been both challenging and rewarding. For example, Some students were certainly challenging to work with as they gave off a hue of discomfort and disinterest. During one class period, I was tasked with helping a student finish his Algebra assignment that required him to solve for variables on a worksheet. The student did not understand the assignment and was clearly reluctant to complete it, despite already being late to turn it in. I was able to demonstrate patience by spending two whole block periods with the student while working on the assignment until he was able to grasp the concepts being taught. I have studied English since I was a grade seven, but the curriculum in my middle school and high school years, mainly focuses on reading and speaking components of language skills, with a little focus on writing. As a result, I never felt confident with any piece that I was asked to write. Writing has been a hurdle for me to succeed in college since most of the courses in college requires one or the other way writing skill. Consequently, I have decided to work on my writing skills, and have started working on it; even before, I started taking this English 101 class. I used to use a various educational material which I thought might help me to meet my writing goal. Some of the materials which I was using includes: TOEFL educational materials, You Tube resources, and various novels. All of these resources have helped me to polish my writing skills. Furthermore, after I started taking this class, I have learned to enjoy writing. I have made it a point to communicate my own thoughts and feelings as opposed to simply summarize the thoughts of famous writers and authors before me. This class builds up my confidence in my own writing and for that I am highly appreciative.
This class has enlightened me and refreshed my knowledge towards the math skills that I was introduced within the course Introduction to College Algebra, and College Algebra last semester. When the College Algebra class started a lot of the concepts that I learned 2 years ago were very familiar. However there were rules that I forgot, which lead me to get lost in the problem or concept. There are specific skills that will help me for further advanced math classes that I need in order to complete my Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography degree. Undoubtedly, other math skills will help me in my workplace and life in general whenever I become a sonographer in the future.
My long term career goal is to found my own financial company that specializes in applying advanced analytics tools to solve complex financial problems. Having worked as a financial analytics analyst for more than 6 months at Enova Financial, a Chicago-based consumer online financing company, my passion towards financial analytics is reinforced. Ranging from basic data query and reporting to predictive modeling and optimization, data analytics has assumed a more important role in today’s financial services industry. Mastering data analytics could help financial institutions acquire the relevant information in the shortest amount of time and make the informed decisions thereafter. When students are deciding on where to go to college, they have the option of choosing between online classes and the traditional classroom classes. Today, some students are finding it much easier to maintain a job, family and start a college career, all by taking online classes. Although some students still prefer to stick with the traditional classroom classes, they still have the option to take online classes.
