For the next couple of weeks before winter break, Christopher was made fun of and picked on by his classmates and the other kids at school, who’d heard about Christopher’s wish of becoming a snowman. But no one picked on Christopher more than Buster Rowdy. Buster Rowdy was the biggest boy in Christopher’s class, and to top it off, he was a Bully. His specialty was bullying Christopher. Buster loved to grab Christopher’s glasses and put his oily fingerprints on the lenses. “Look, its snow boy!” Taunted Buster when Chris entered the classroom every morning. Christopher did his best to ignore Buster and avoided crossing paths with him, but Buster always found a way to bully him. “Woops!” laughed Buster, sticking his leg out and tripping Christopher
When Ralph blows the conch, Jack is introduced to the reader for the first time. He is represented as an audacious and selfish boy who likes to order others around when he says "I ought to be chief, because I'm chapter chorister and head boy"(Goldberg p.22). It also confirms his hunger for power and wanting control over everything. His choleric and petulant personality can be seen when he says "Shut up, Fatty."(p.23), also revealing that he is rude and inconsiderate of others. Despite his obnoxious personality, his conscious of civilization keeps him from killing the first pig they see. He even recommends that the boys should have rules to keep things in order.
On the way from his home to Alaska, Christopher met numerous people. He loved their company and never allowed them to feel that he was un-friendly. He expressed their importance in his life by keeping in touch with them till the very end. Particularly, he often wrote to Westerberg and Jan. He never wished to ignore them. He once replied to Jan and Bob, who were wishing to meet him on Christmas. McCandless replied saying that “Thanks so much for the Christmas card. It’s nice to be thought of this time of year…You’re welcome any time. It’s really great to think that after almost a year and a half we shall be meeting again” (42). McCandless preferred to be in company rather than being alone. Being remembered at the time of Christmas is great for any person. McCandless also shared these feelings of happiness. He should, thus be admired, for his never-lasting quality of valuing and possessing human emotions. He never wanted his friends to get detached from him. To overcome this, he always kept in touch with them by writing letters, and informing them about what he was up to. He once wrote to Westerberg that “It is rare to find a man as generous and good natured as you. Sometimes I wish I hadn’t met you though. Intellectually advanced compared to others, but easily mistreated, Piggy has the persona of a geek. Piggy is an outstanding representation of perseverance. Originally, when Piggy introduces himself to Ralph he begs him to call him anything but “Piggy.” Yet, as soon as people begin to talk to Ralph he let’s the horrid nickname slip, “He’s not Fatty,” cried Ralph, ‘his real name’s Piggy,” (17). Though Piggy is always ignored,
Christopher during the course of the text of the novel learns to disregard other people’s judgments.
It is hard to find a perfect match for Piggy. He is full of sensible, bright ideas, but because he is fat, a nerd and wears glasses, no one will listen to him except for Ralph. He was also kind of irritating. For example, he followed the rules too much. If something wasn’t done the way he knew was right, he would get all irate. Then, of course, when it went wrong, Piggy had no hesitation in telling people that he could’ve done it better.
In a lot of ways Krakauer relates to Christopher like their complicated relationship with their father’s,”Like McCandless, figures of male authority aroused in me a confusing medley of corked fury and hunger to please” ( Krakauer 134). Using words like “Fury” and “hunger” both describe christopher, they convey Christopher’s anger towards his parents ( more so his father) and his undying will to fool them into thinking that they are all he needs in this world. Krakauer like McCandless has the unconscious behavior to please but also defy at the same time. Krakauer says,” The boy could not pardon the mistakes his father had made as a young man, and he was even less willing to pardon the attempt at concealment. He later declared to Carine and others that the description committed by Walt and Billie made his “ entire childhood seem like a fiction “ ( Krakauer 122-123). The word “ fiction” was used to describe how much of a convoluted story was that Walt had described being that the relationship was nothing that was described. This sheds light on why Christopher was headed towards the adventurous life and why he greatly despised his parents. Krakauer also uses anecdotal evidence to examine Christopher and his parents
The episode begins with Chris explaining that he had gotten involved in a fight with the school bully, Caruso, and was beaten up and lost. However, because he is black, all of the faculty and children at the school assumed that Chris did more violent and horrible things to Caruso than actually occurred, such as hurting Caruso’s family, calling him a “cracker”, and stealing his house. Some of the teachers actually go so far as to avoid Chris out of fear of him starting some kind of trouble. Chris is the only black person at his school and is constantly stereotyped by his white schoolmates. In one part of the episode, Chris explains how the children find him fascinating because he is black, treating him more as an exhibit of sorts to be ogled at rather than actual person. The kids ask to touch his hair and ask him racist questions such as "Do you know Gary Coleman?" assuming he does simply because he is black.
Heroism and villainy are two things that every story has. There is no escaping it. Whether the story is fiction or non-fiction, there is always a protagonist and antagonist, hero and villain. What a lot of people might miss is the heroism and villainy in the history of humanity and our present day lives. I think Lawrence Hill was able to capture this commonly overlooked concept in The Book of Negroes. Although the book shows the evil villainy behind the slave trade, its main focus is on acts of heroism as the main character is a heroic “black” in a world made for “whites”. Before even reading one passage from the book, it is easily perceivable through history that the white peoples are the villains of the slave trade and the 1700’s in general. In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, there are many scenes that illustrate the blind, violent nature that most humans tend to share. Mark Twain has used violence throughout his novel to enhance his beliefs on the injustices of slavery and any other form of senseless violence known to mankind. From the beginning with Pap's continuous abuse towards Huck, till the end with Emmiline Grangerfords poetry, is filled with violent sections that magnify the hypocrisy and stupidity of people.
At the beginning of the story, he told many incidents of the past of screaming in situations where mass amounts of people were in the same area as him. However, near the end of the novel we see him riding on a train and reaching his mother by himself. This realization of self-worth and ability to do anything he sets his mind to was a major lesson that throughout the book Christopher learned. Also, since Christopher is on the autism spectrum when he learned about complex facial expressions, such as worried or scared, it was an important lesson about human nature and communication. First impressions of people are often lasting impressions, especially in the minds of children. Many times these impressions, aided by misunderstanding and prejudgment, cause unjust discrimination against an individual. To kill a Mockingbird depicts the themes of misunderstanding and prejudice that portray Arthur (Boo) Radley as a villain. Through the progressive revelation of Radley's character, the children realize that their negative impressions and fear of him were unfounded. Everyone has their own version of a hero. Nonetheless, each hero has courage and shows bravery even in the toughest of times. They are able to go against what society considers the norm. In Ernest J. Gaines’ book, A Lesson Before Dying, the hero is a young African American boy named Jefferson, who was caught at the wrong place at the wrong time.
