Today I met with my mentor and started out with the safety course. I learned different types of bullets for different types of guns. Some bullets are used for self defense and some are used pretty much just for practice like in ranges. Bullets for self defense are more expensive than more or less practice bullets. I learned that almost every gun has a different bullet and a different size bullet. If a bullet is used in the wrong gun it can cause the gun to malfunction and it could possibly blow up. For example a 22 magnum has a 22 hundredths of an inch diameter bullet if you put in the wrong bullet you can damage the gun very badly. I learned the difference between a revolver and a glock. I learned how to properly hand someone these weapons
My grandfather introduced me to guns when I was about 10 by letting me shoot his .22 caliber pistol at the local gun range. He was a Florida Highway Patrolman for 30 years. He loves collecti...
Swallowing Stones is only one example of an accidental shooting caused by uneducated shooters, but there are so many more. “I never imagined this could happen”, Eric Rivera said. “He was standing right next to me when he fell.” Eric is referring to a man named Javier Rivera, who was killed instantly when a stray bullet struck him in the back of the head. No one even heard the gunshot, Javier and his family were just enjoying the New Year’s fireworks. “If people would just remember, don’t shoot guns. You know once it comes up, it’s got to come down.” Peterson says (Crea, Jacquelin). This is a major problem in today’s society, which is why teens would benefit from reading Swallowing Stones and openly discussing it. Teenagers do not know enough about gun safety, but most have shot a gun before. Michael, and the man who shot Javier Rivera, both forgot the one major rule in gun safety; never shoot without a backstop. Guns are not to be taken lightly, yet parents give them to their kids without teaching them the rules and dangers of it. Some parents just completely avoid the topic of guns as a whole, and their kids find a way to
One of the biggest debates in education is how to respond to gun violence in schools. According to BBC, “There were 64 school shootings in 2015” (BBC). One response to the rise in gun violence in schools is to arm teachers. Even our President has mentioned “giving a bonus” (Davis 2) to teachers that The fact that the idea of arming teachers is even being discussed is disappointing. Bringing more guns into a school is not the answer to gun violence. Most people that defend the idea that guns will “help” keep schools safe have basically three points: (1) teachers will be trained in gun safety, (2) it helps deter potential school shooters, and (3) it will make the students feel more safe. Even though there is some truth to those points, I think that the cons of arming teachers vastly outweigh the pros of arming teachers.
In America there are 89 firearms per 100 people (Moore) so it is safe to say most people will come in contact with a firearm in their lifetime. But when you do, will you know how to handle the situation? Guns can be deadly when abused and used incorrectly. There is a way to reduce the unnecessary deaths.
There have been several incidents where a child in the household has mistaken a gun for a toy and have mortally wounded himself and others with it. There have also been occasions where careless gun owners have left their guns loaded and have accidentally shot someone. Studies have shown that four people die each day due to accidental gun fire. Anti-gun users have pointed out that states that have relaxed their gun laws have had an increases in homicides. Also just because its anyone’s right to own a gun does not mean that they went through any sort of training to be able to use that gun. Most anti-gun users argue that most of these people who buy guns need to be properly trained before they can operate a gun, in order to prevent innocent and unnecessary harm or
Some choose the noble choice of the military, others to work in construction and automotive toiling with shovel and wrench. Others choose more precise work, such as becoming machinists, doctors and engineers--the secret behind the scenes people who make things work in today’s society. But, there is a job that entails all, something complicated requiring the finesse of a heart surgeon, but with the understanding of a engineer: the art of gunsmithing. An art that essentially made the United States possible and separates it from others in the world. From the invention of black powder and the hand cannon to the 6,000 round per minute Dillon Minigun, firearms
Guns are an instrument that even the most careful of people could do harm with. Gun owners should go to firearm safety classes so they will be educated on proper handling and storage of the gun. While this should only be voluntary, something should be done to insure that guns are only sold to people who have a safe background and are of age. Congress should mandate the registration of handguns in order to keep criminals from possessing guns, to cut back on violence in the home, and to avoid accidental or intentional violence among children.
Violence related to guns is a prominent issue in America. Guns are a means to an end; meaning guns have played a strong role in suicides, murders, and injuries. In the past decade there has been an average of 400-500 thousand incidents of firearms per year (Gun Violence). The number of injured people from firearm incidents in the United States per year for the past decade is 400-600 thousand people (Gun Violence). These statistics are absolutely shocking to anyone. The amount of violence and crime that comes from guns is enormous. It is imperative that proper gun control is put into place by means of background checks and proper training. It can almost be certain that the number of incidents of accidental discharges from children and the number of victims affected by gun crimes in general can be highly reduced.
When looking at all of the important issues of today’s society, one of the most neglected issues revolves around guns. Guns serve two different purposes: to defend and to kill. Even though I’ve been on this Earth for only 21 years, I’ve become keen and have taken an interest in the study of guns and how they pose more problems in society than any other issue. My interest all started around the time of the Columbine shooting in Colorado and how society has taken steps since that point in history. Going back to the two different purposes, both have been used to help explain the differences in the distinctions of different gun related events that continue to occur, such as mass shootings. Problem analysis, as stated, will help to explain how guns can be seen differently from each individual and what can be gained or lost from a deep analysis.
College campuses are more dangerous than ever because of the past decade; guns have not only been manufactured in excess, but availability and ease of accessibility. According to James Cool (2008), a supporter of guns on campus, reasoned why the increase of weapons occurred recently; “Our nation was founded … during the same time that modern firearms were invented and became readily available due to the Industr...
The Kansas City Gun Experiment was a study that took place between 1992 and 1993. The goal of the study was to examine if increased police patrol in a “hot spot” of the city would help to reduce the amount of gun-related crime. The data collected by the research team was solely quantitative as it mainly consisted of statistics and other data numerical in nature of the increase/decrease of gun violence in these beats. After the twenty-nine week period of the study, the experiment’s findings showed that an increase in police patrol, as well as seizure of illegally carried guns, did help to eliminate gun-related crimes.
...,you will learn to have control over your rifle and your body at all times. You will also learn safety and marksmanship principles as you practice firing blank rounds, loading your rifle within seconds, and learn to shoot from every firing position: sitting, kneeling, standing and in the prone.
Guns are extremely powerful weapons. They can cause destruction, harm or even death. They can be used to defend and protect or to threaten and kill. Any way you look at it, guns are powerful tools, not only physically but socially. As college students it is important to stay abreast of the current events and issues circulating our country today, one of which is the controversial issue of gun control. It is extremely important to pay attention to where gun control laws are headed. The directions they take not only affect our nation and society but our future as well as we all move to communities and begin to raise families.
Because of this man’s actions, many lives were saved. Without having guns in the hands of responsible citizens, many more incidents such as this one could take place. As it has since been stated earlier, gun control is not mandating the removal of guns from the hands of law-abiding citizens, but teaching the proper ways to store, manage, and use a gun responsibly. In America, restricting the ownership of guns to citizens should be prohibited. Although there are many people who oppose private ownership of firearms, what they don 't realize is that firearms can also protect their lives. When guns are in the hands of responsible individuals, they can benefit their own lives as well as the lives of those who cannot protect themselves or for just recreational purposes. However, there are many deaths caused by guns, but the amount of deaths prevented with gun use outweighs them tremendously. Also, the smart gun and training courses could prevent many of these deaths. “Nearly two million more crimes are prevented with guns than are ‘caused’ by guns” (Connell). Ultimately, guns in America have a huge impact on our life and many benefits are overlooked. After reviewing all the research, it is clear to see the many benefits of having guns prominently used in our society. Not only do guns protect the lives of
Gun safety is very important in the matters of teaching people that firearms are not a toy. One should always treat the gun like it is loaded. Too many people choose to play around with guns by swinging them around, tossing them to people, or aiming the gun at other people and pretending to shoot them. These are signs that people are much too immature and should not be handling a firearm.
