1) Donna Fernandez demonstrated several successful leadership traits. The Buffalo Zoo CEO possessed energy and determination for the Buffalo Zoo and her employees. Secondly, her followers viewed her as a dependable leader. Finally, Donna reveals she is a leader with integrity.
First, Donna is a leader with energy and determination. Lussier and Achua state that leaders with energy and determination “have high energy with a positive drive to work hard to achieve goals.” (p. 37) This is true for Donna. In the video, the zoo employees mentioned several times that their leader is a hard worker who is not afraid to get her hands dirty. Upon her arrival, the CEO did not hesitate to immerse herself at the lowest level of zoo operations. Donna also trained as a zookeeper in order to learn the frustrations of her employees. Alongside her employees, Donna got her hands dirty in the trenches, which some may consider non-CEO type work. Donna proved that she had the energy to do the hard work and that she possessed the determination to identify the employee’s issues so she could solve them.

Under the program, all employees would learn about all the Zoo’s different animals. During this rotation, each zookeeper educated the other zookeepers on his/her lane of expertise. This program empowered the employees to demonstrate their enthusiasm for their expertise, but also displayed, to all employees, how important each employee is to the Zoo’s operations. The challenging process of being a leader worth following is an arduous task. Yet, in the book the Five Dysfunctions of a Team, the fictional leader Katherine seemingly demonstrates it with an effortless ease. Johnson’s strengths are that she has the experience of military and attended HBS, where both her leader personality and business insight were enabled. She is a “go-getter” and can “instill confidence into the people around her”, according to her colleagues and subordinates. She is also communicative, because she initiated “one-to-one” conversation with every employee, and arranged plant-wide “state of the site” meetings from quarterly to monthly. In the interview, I asked her what kind of relationship does she have with her students and she said that she puts them at the same level as here because she doesn’t like the idea one person being superior to someone else. She used a supporting leadership style by allowing her students to feel free to think outside of the box without any judgment while still knowing that she will be there to help if they need it. She also said that she adapts her leadership style depending on the student she is working with. She shows traits of the Transformational Leader by always reassuring her Student Leadership Team that she is not her for the paycheck. Instead, she is here to make sure that every student is prepared for life after high school. Welfare-based zoos are cognizant of the well-being of the animals it inhabits. The welfare of the animals in such zoos is valued over the exploitation of the animals. In other words, the owners and workers in welfare-based zoos are not concerned about the amount of income they are receiving from the number of visitors. They are concerned about the well-being and ethical treatment of the animals. Zamir Tzachi, a philosopher and professor, defends good zoos in the fact that they remain true to their moral treatment of animals. Many zoos respect animals and treat them with utmost dignity and kindness. Instead of housing the animals for human enjoyment and exploitation of the animals, the zoos focus on providing safe environments where the animals can thrive and be safe. After the animal is content, it will then be able to live comfortably as human visitors pass by in awe. An acceptable and good zoo must provide the proper amount of food, drink, and care for each of its specific animals. The spaces created for each animal must not be uncomfortable or over populated or cramped in size. Animals should be able to receive veterinary help when needed and treated with respect and nurture by workers. Even more, the animals must be protected from the actions of zoo visitors. As long as zoos treat animals with proper care and provide a morally acceptable environment, they are deemed as being good zoos
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead.
