Buffalo Hunt My story is about Indians that hunt buffalo. In the 1500's Indians ran on foot across the plains and they brought dogs to carry the hunters pack (load). They would travel a long ways to hunt buffalo. Once they saw buffalo, they would go back to their camp and tell the other warriors that they saw buffalo. They would leave to hunt in the morning and when they were able to see outside, the warriors went towards where they saw the buffalo. Then when they got to the buffalo, they would circle them and stab them so they die. In the 1800's, white traders were killing all the buffalo. The Indians were starving to death so they had a war and the Indians were starving during the war. The indians killed alot of the white traders
with horses. But the white traders were killing the horses so the indians were running at the white traders. In 1832, the Indians built cannals and they would chase the herds of buffalo into it. There was one warrior at the bottom and if any buffalo survived the fall he would stab them. Then the buther would get the skin and put the buffalo's meat in it and carry it back like a backpack. Then they would put the meat over a fire and cook it into jerky. The meat on the head would rot if cooked, so they would eat the meat raw from their cracked skull instead.

During the time of the building of the transcontinental railroad, a lot of white men killed the buffalo. They found that as a sport, and even used it to harm the Plains Indians. At that time the buffalo was a main source of food, fur, and a hunting lifestyle for the Plains Indians and by the white man killing it off it effectively hurt them. The white man killed the buffalo in large numbers that almost made them go instinctively, and they hurt the Plains Indians huge. Although the Plains Indians did kill the buffalo for their food and furs, their hunting did not have a large impact on the buffalo population.
This caused the Indians to starve because they depended on the British’s gifts to hunt and trade. The British didn’t respect the Indian and disregard their culture and what they follow.

This quote shows the Chief of the Kiowa’s perspective of the actions the American soldiers were taking. In Europe, timber was in high demand since Europe 's supply was running low. This resulted in Americans cutting down many of their trees to trade with Europe. Native Americans expressed great gratitude for their land and when it was being destroyed it affected them deeply. In “Promise of the High Plains,” a flyer created in the 1800s it states, “The finest timber West of the Great Wabash Valley” (The Railroaders) when trying to convince the people why to move west. This flyer shows that Americans were advertising the timber on the western land to convince more people to move. Buffalo was also a very important resource for the Native Americans culture and way of life. Buffalo was used as food, clothing, and housing. Not only were Buffalo used for survival, but they were also part of their religious rituals. With buffalo numbers decreasing fast, Native Americans tribes faced starvation and desperation. Whites found gold in Sioux land and wanted the Sioux to sell their land. The Sioux said no, and so the whites invaded. “Anyway, this was all the excuse needed for government to pour resources into subduing Sioux and negotiating a new treaty (1876) which ceded the Black Hills. And much hunting ground. This: destroyed way of life, disrupted leadership, destroyed economy, destroyed religion, and created conflicts among Indians themselves.” In 1878, the Timber and Stone Act let people buy land that was “unfit for cultivation” for really cheap prices.
The first settlers arrived in New England in 1620. They wanted to live in peace with the Natives. Problems began because settlers and the Natives had different views for the land. Settlers wanted to own large amounts of land because owning land often meant you were wealthy and powerful. The Native Americans believed that no one could own land but they can use it. The Native Americans taught settlers how to plant crops on this land but they did not understand that the settlers were going to keep the land for themselves. More settlers began to come over and take more land. They began kicking the Natives out. All of land taking was starting to cause tension between these two groups of people. By the 19th Century, the westward expansion of the US caused many of the Native Americans to move further west, usually by force. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 caused tens of thousands of Native Americans to be relocated. The Native Americans were not treated right. In the movies The Searchers and Avatar the bad way people treat natives is very evident.
This worked until the white people came over and money was introduced. Along with other spices and beads and such to trade with. The Dakota Sioux were not a very confrontational group and never really got into wars with other tribes but did when the white settlers came over. This war was known as the Great Sioux War. The Dakota fought hard to keep their land but with the invention of the rife and the upper hand of having more men. The settlers were able to stop the natives from trying to push them back to the east. When the white men wanted to take their land for good, they found the best way to get these natives to go where they wanted was to kill off the buffalo. They killed all the buffalo except the ones near the reservation. Because of the fact that the Dakota migrated with the buffalo they were forced onto the reservations where the majority stayed and lived for hundreds of years while the United states was forming. This made the Dakota dependant of the Newley forming U.S. government to make sure they had food. This was all given when the Dakota signed a treaty giving their land to the Migrators. Ultimately without the buffalo the Dakota people starved because of the fact that they could no longer find what they needed on the reservation. This started in 1889 when starvation had whispered across North and South Dakota. This made the Dakota people revolt and start to head westward to find new
