First is Buddhism, as one of the leading religions in popularity, Buddhism is often known for their wise and respectful traditions. Instead of the afterlife Buddhists believe in reincarnation, the act of being reborn as a new entity. This is part of the “Samsara” also known as the cycle of life; this theory states that once you die the energy of your body is transferred into another. Though with this belief Buddhists still believe that nothing is permanent, this religious law is referred to as Annica. There are six realms and depending on which realms one is rebirthed into they will be rebirthed into a specific level which either reward you or punish you. Heaven, being the most rewarding is known as the home of Gods (Devas). This is a realm for ecstatic long lived beings. This is one of the 2 realms that acquire levels, Heaven consists of 26 levels of increasing happiness. The next realm is the realm of humanity, this realm is relevant due to its close proximity to Nirvana. The third realm is the realm of Titans or angry Gods (Asuras), this realm is designated to those who rely on anger impulses. Following the realm of Titans is the realm of the hungry ghost (Pretas). This realm is designated to those who are driven by greed, hence the word “hungry” in the realm’s name. Humans who are easily exploited are sent to the animal realm as they do not seek liberation through self awareness. The final realm is the Hell realms. Also known as Naraka, Hell consists of 29 levels of punishment, an entity will remain in this realm until it's bad karma is paid off. An example of one the Hell’s levels is Maharaurava. Its major ideologies are based on the philosophies of Siddhartha Guatama, also known as “Buddha”, who began his teachings in 598 BCE at the age of 35, according to Buddhist texts. A Buddhist’s foremost aspiration is the obtainment of Bodhi, or enlightenment through meditation and Anapana-sati (awareness of the breath). Buddhism shares many ideologies with India’s Hinduism and Yoga such as non-harming, non-violence, and self-awareness. In many instances, people regard Buddhism as a way of life rather than a religion, for it has no clear belief in the idea of a God or Gods. Its structure is built upon a hierarchy much like Christianity where superior orders such as Lamas or the Dalai Lama are said to be chosen by nature through the process of reincarnation rather than by a council like Christianity’s Pope. Though these “higher level” Buddhists are rare (not everyone is a reincarnation of an ancient Buddhist “priest”), all are permitted to follow “The Middle Way” either as a Buddhist monk or the simple attendance of a weekly teaching session from time to time. Buddhism places a high value on finding the truth. This fundamental principal allows for an acceptance of science, as it is seen as a modern truth to most. Furthermore, Buddhists believe in the evolution of human consciousness—this evolution, along with the truth presented from science, allows for an over arching acceptance of biological evolution. Even more interesting is that in the Agganna Sutta, a sacred Buddhist text, Buddha explains the world as having evolved over time. Though there is no mention of biological evolution, there is still an emphasis of evolution as a whole—both physically and spiritually. Tibetan Buddhism is known as the branch of Buddhism that has the largest emphasis on reincarnation, which is the most relevant to this research. Reincarnation is driven by the decisions made in each life and is basically the knowledge that one’s spirit travels between material beings over different lives. The spirit evolves as one becomes closer and closer to Nirvana, or perfection. Karma, too, influences the lives of the reincarnated as this idea causes the consequences of both good and bad deeds from each past life to be brought over to the current life. Overall, Tibetan Buddhism and evolution flow very well together as various Buddhist beliefs in spiritual evolution and karma, and the search for truth lead to the acceptance of science and evolution.
In the western world, a dominant belief is that after life, a person’s soul is sent to a place of eternal bliss, heaven, or a place of eternal damnation, hell. To Buddhists, this concept is not the norm. Buddhists believe that a person is reincarnated into another life form, either human or animal. What life form a person is reincarnated as is determined by the person’s karma. The concept of karma not only affects reincarnation, but also what path a person’s life takes. While much of the concept of karma is believable and comprehensible by a person of any denomination, some aspects are dependant upon a belief in reincarnation and that a person will eventually be punished for his sins or rewarded for his good deeds, whether in this life or the next. At the same time, in order to believe in how reincarnation works, a person must understand the idea of karma.
Jainism and Buddhism share many values including their ultimate goal that is to clear all Karma and reach Nirvana. Both of these religions believe in reincarnation and that Karma is a spiritual matter that follows an individual through life, death, and rebirth. A very interesting and different conviction between the two systems is that Jains believe that it is an individuals soul that is reborn with karma from past lives, even “Though Buddhism rejects the existence of the soul…” Buddhism still believes that beings are born with karma. Buddhism can be indirectly defined by using Ninian Smart’s Seven Dimensions of Religion. Ninian Smart pioneered the idea of secular religious study (Ninian Smart). In 1968, he tried to define religion by defining the shared “dimensions,” or properties, rather than creating a dictionary definition of the word. Initially, there was six dimensions, but in 1998, he updated the list to seven (Smart, Blackboard, Religion 100). The first dimension is ritual and practical, which are the practices directly involving a religion, such as prayer and weekly worship services. The second is an experiential and emotional dimension, which are the emotional experiences of the central figures or the feelings a practitioner gets, such as the mystical feeling of “being born again.” The third is a narrative or mythic dimension, which is the stories within a religion about the events surrounding the creation or important events, such as the stories in the Christian Bible or Islamic Qur’an. The fourth dimension is a doctrinal and philosophical, are the texts or philosophies, which bind its practitioners to a particular view of life, such as the certain actions that lead to a path of salvation. The fifth dimension is ethical and legal, which is a set of ways a practitioner should live their life, which is influenced by the narrative and doctrinal dimensions, such as the several hundred rules within the Judaism or Shari'ah law in Islamism. Christians, for example, believe that souls that have lived by the words of their God will exist eternally in heaven as divine beings themselves. This conception of an afterlife is generally what we people who are residents of the Unitied States hold to be true. For American culture has its roots in Europe and European culture was and is still influenced by Christian faiths. Similar to Christianity, the Hinduism also eases the fear of death by presenting a life after death. Disimilarities present themselves in the two faiths concerning exactly what kind of afterlife is lived. I thought that, like many other religions, there was a desirable and undesirable place to go to after death. Hindus do not believe in a heaven or hell.
