The protagonist, more commonly known as the main character, of a story is the most important figure. They are a dynamic (which is a character that has a three-dimensional quality to them due to being very well developed) character and take part in the main conflict of the story. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, there are two potential protagonists, Brutus and Caesar. There is proof to back up both sides of the argument. However, there is more solid proof that Brutus is the protagonist in the story rather than Caesar. Brutus shows the qualities of a protagonist more than Caesar and is the protagonist of the story.

There are a couple of major conflicts throughout the play and Brutus not only takes part in both, but he also starts both conflicts. He kills Caesar, and was the one to decide to kill Caesar for the sake of Rome. Another conflict, the war against Brutus and Antony (and also Cassius and Octavius), was started when he killed Caesar. So each major conflict led to the other by decisions that Brutus made. In other plays by Shakespeare, such as Macbeth and Othello, it is shown that conflict can have horrible consequences (“GCSE Drama”). And once Casca shouted, “Speak hands for me!” and stabbed Caesar, the major conflicts began to unfold (Anderson et al. 823). Some people who believe that Caesar is the true protagonist of the story may say that Caesar did take part in a major conflict. This is true, however, Caesar never changed throughout the story. He only died after he was stabbed thirty-three times by the conspirators. And death does not count as a change. Another thing is that Caesar didn’t take part in all major conflicts and didn’t start any of them either. Therefore, Caesar does not have all of the characteristics a protagonist should have and could not possibly be the protagonist of the
