Bruno & Shmuel The boy in the essay that will be written about as a hero, will come from the movie The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Bruno is an eight year old boy whose family moved to Berlin for his father’s job transfer. The family moves into a residence home in Auschwitz, which is right in front of a concentration camp. Bruno’s oblivious when it comes to knowing what a concentration camp is. He has no idea what Shmuel, another eight year old boy, with missing teeth, a shaved head, and doesn’t shower every day, is doing over on the other side of a barbed wire gate. Bruno just thinks that all those men “working hard”, is just Bruno’s family. Shmuel looks up to Bruno as a hero for the many things Bruno has done for his friend. When Bruno and his family move to the residence, one day Bruno decides not to go to school and just to explore his back yard, which leads into a bunch of woods, but in the back of those woods is the concentration camp. Shmuel asks for Bruno to bring him food. Bruno is still oblivious to the fact that his friend is imprisoned and working at a concentration camp. Shmuel never told Bruno he was a prisoner there until he asked for Bruno’s help to find his father. Meanwhile at Bruno’s house, his father and mother are hosting dinner for Adolf Hitler and his companion Eva. Bruno does not like Hitler and Eva being at his house at all, he despises it, not even knowing who they actually are and that they are the reason his friend is in the concentration camp. One day Bruno sees Shmuel cleaning some cups and when Bruno asks why he’s there, Shmuel says “they wanted someone with little fingers to clean them”. Bruno sees Shmuel looking at the food so he asks if he wants some. Of course, Shmuel says yes but when one of Bruno’s dads’ soldiers sees Shmuel eating, he yells in his face. Shmuel tells the solider that Bruno gave him the food but Bruno tells the solider he didn’t know Shmuel. Bruno gets taking away and cries while Shmuel gets beat by the solider. Obviously Bruno was no hero to Shmuel at that moment, but Bruno kept going back to the camp multiple days in a row to see if Shmuel was sitting by the gate. Finally the third day Bruno went back to the camp, Shmuel was there, Bruno’s excitement lit up like a light bulb.
He went on and on about how sorry he was and that he felt so bad that he lied to the solider about not knowing Shmuel. Shmuel forgave him and they became the best of friends again, on the opposite side of the gate of course. The last day Bruno goes to see Shmuel, Shmuel askes Bruno if he’d help find his father. To make sure Shmuel trusts Bruno again, Bruno says yes and gets “striped pajamas” from Shmuel. Bruno gets a cap to cover his full head of hair and they dig a hole that Bruno is able to go under, underneath the gate. Once they get Bruno under the gate they start to look, it also starts to poor rain and Bruno’s mother realizes Bruno is nowhere near to be
found. Bruno and Shmuel go into a little part of the camp where many prisoners are to look for Shmuel’s father, suddenly, soldiers make all the prisoners get out of that little part of the camp to takes a shower, little do Bruno and Shmuel know that they are actually going into the gas chambers. Bruno’s parents are still looking for him, but they don’t know that it’s too late. Bruno has died next to Shmuel, in the gas chambers. Bruno is a hero to Shmuel because he was there for every moment Shmuel needed him, with games, food, and a friendship, except when Bruno lied to the soldier. Bruno will be a hero to Shmuel and always will be.
While the adults show their disgust and hatred to the Jews, Bruno doesn't mind them and is nice to Pavel, the Jew that got him the tire, and later becomes friends with Shmuel. Bruno’s father is a soldier and is in charge of the concentration camp. Even with all the Jew hating Germans around him, he still goes out to visit Shmuel and doesn’t let them ruin his friendship. Near the end of the movie Bruno shows his friend how much he cares by entering the camp to help look for Shmuel’s father, who had gone missing. While entering the camp, Bruno learned first hand how bad the camps actually were and wished he hadn’t come. Even with these feelings he still wants to help his friend, which eventually leads to his demise.

Let’s start comparing these characters let’s start with the younger one Bruno from The Boy in Striped Pajamas. Bruno is a little nine year old who is living in Berlin with his family. When he gets to out-with he hates it there he has no friends and now has a smaller house. He notices something out of his window. A fence across the street separating him and people in striped uniform. Time passes and he starts to like his new home. One day he went outside to explore witch was not allowed to do and never to come close to the big fence. But he went walking by the big fence until he saw a little boy. He introduced himself as Shmuel. They talked and became secret best friends. “He looked down and did something quite out of character for him: he took hold of Shmuel's tiny hand in his and squeezed it tightly.”- Pg.213 "You're my best friend, Shmuel," he said. One day when Shmuel gets sent to shine glasses at his house him and Bruno start talking. A soldier see them and Bruno told him he didn’t know who he was, and the soldier beats the boy, Bruno feels terrible and want to make it up to Shmuel. Bruno wants to understand why the life behind the fence is so awful and why Shmuel isn’t happy. Bruno thinks it’s not better, but interesting because there are other kids to play with. They form a strong bond that can't be broken by anything and it makes him realize that his friends in Berlin weren't as special as Shmuel is and their friendship. The two boys have been talking and have been friends for about a year and decide that Bruno wants to go on the other side of the fence to see what its like and help him find his papa.

Amid the barbaric German Nazi invasions, are where we find the main characters of these two films. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas tells the story of Bruno, a son of German Nazi soldier who befriends an inmate at a nearby concentration camp. For weeks, Bruno shares stories, food, and comforts the inmate, Shmuel, despite his parent’s orders and German upbringing. Bruno has grown up exposed to the Nazi propaganda, however his German upbringing does not create hostility or resentment toward this Jewish boy, but instead compassion. Similarly, Oskar Schindler, a German business man saved the lives of thousands of Jewish prisoners by arranging them to work in his factory. Both Oskar Schindler and Bruno did not allow neither their collective identity as Germans nor their pro-Nazi culture, to become central to their own individual identity and morals. Even as Bruno and Shmuel see all of this they stick together in the name of friendship and brotherhood. As they get cramped in the dark room, with light slowly closing, Bruno and Shmuel hold hands and never let go at this scene. The author's theme is clearly shown because when everyone is screaming and panicking, Bruno and Shmuel never let go of each other in the dark and eventually hug to the point where their story ends. In Schindler’s List directed by Steven Spielberg, Oskar Schindler is regarded as a great hero amongst many Jews regardless of the fact that he is a German Nazi, because he saves the generations and lives of 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust. The Holocaust was the systematic mass murder of about 6 million Jews and millions of others during World War II that was taken place in Nazi Concentration Camps, under the German Nazi regime. In the midst of this brutal time period, Oskar Schindler finds the heart to undergo a change from being the mere pragmatic, rich man to becoming the virtuous, good man who helps save Jews. But rather than a benefactor, Oskar Schindler was more of a self-motivator who set goals upon his own visions and dreams, and one who undertook goals to have them achieved into reality. We see this characteristic in Schindler being brought forth when he works toward his goal in becoming rich, when he influences some of his self motivation on Goeth, and when Schindler approaches toward his newly changed goal in saving Jews.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, by John Boyne, significantly distorts the truth of the Holocaust in order to evoke the empathy of the audience. This response is accomplished by the author through hyperbolizing the innocence of the nine-year old protagonist, Bruno. Through the use of dramatic irony, Boyne is able to both engage and involve the audience in the events of the novel. Although it is highly improbable that a son of a German high-ranking Schutzstaffel (SS) officer would not know what a Jew is and would be unable to pronounce both Fuhrer and Auschwitz, (which he instead mispronounces as ‘Fury’ and ‘Out-with’ respectively, both of which are intentional emotive puns placed by the author to emphasize the atrocity of the events), the attribution of such information demonstrates the exaggerated innocence of Bruno and allows the audience to know and understand more than him. This permits the readers to perceive a sense of involvement, thus, allowing the audience to be subjected towards feeling more dynamic and vigorous evocation of emotions and empathy towards the characters. The audience’s focus was meant to be on the experience and life of a fun-loving German boy named Bruno. Surrounding this eight-year-old boy were conspicuous Nazi influences. Imagine waking up on a normal day, in your normal house, in your normal room. Imagine if you knew that that day, you would be taken away from your normal life, and forced to a life of death, sickness, and violence. Imagine seeing your parents taken away from you. Imagine watching your family walk into their certain death. Imagine being a survivor. Just think of the nightmares that linger in your mind. You are stuck with emotional pain gnawing at your sanity. These scenerios are just some of the horrific things that went on between 1933-1945, the time of the Holocaust. This tragic and terrifying event has been written about many times. However, this is about one particularly fascinating story called The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne.
He never really knew why Shmuel was on the other side of the fence. In the book, Bruno asked his sister, Gretel, “‘Are we Jews?’” (Boyne 182). This shows that Bruno had very little knowledge of what was really happening in Auschwitz and all around the world. Boyne had also made Bruno use a very shameful and inappropriate term in his book.

The title of the book is evidence to this - Bruno perceives the concentration camp uniforms as "striped pajamas." Further evidence is the misnomers "the Fury," (the Furher) and "Out-With" (Auschwitz). Bruno and Shmuel, the boy he meets from Auschwitz, share a great deal in common but perhaps what is most striking is the childhood innocence which characterizes both boys. Bruno is unaware that his father is a Nazi commandant and that his home is on ther periphery of Auschwitz. Shmuel, imprisoned in the camp, seems not to understand the severity of his situation. When his father goes missing, Shmuel does not understand that he has gone to the gas chamber.
