The brooch is elegant and majestic. It is in the shape of an owl sitting gracefully on a branch. Detailed and colourful, it is as interesting to look at as the life it has lived. Belonging once to my grandma, the owl is old now – and sleepy. Her eyebrows sit heavily over her beautiful eyes, bright like little diamonds despite the brooch’s age. She is midnight blue and has deep pink flowers in the middle of her body; “Look at me”, she seems to say, “I am beautiful.” Green leaves accompany the flowers on her breast plumes, like friends, whilst her eyebrows and the branch she rests on sit apart from the rest of the brooch giving it a three dimensional effect and bringing it to life. It is regal which is emphasised by the fact that every part of it is outlined in gold. It is precious to me: my brooch …show more content…
I had admired it for as long as I could remember, whether it was pinned on to my Gran’s scabby fur coat or resting on her dressing table. My mum once told me that when I was a baby I would point to it any time Gran was wearing it and she would say to me, “that’s my wee owl”, to which I would nod as though this was a very important statement that I understood. As I got older I began to find the contrast between the elegant brooch and shabby fur coat amusing, and it made my Gran all the more endearing to me. When she died, I insisted on having it. I was in her house a few days after her death and it was a sombre occasion. I blinked back tears and sat on my hands before finally asking my Grandad if I could go upstairs to find the
The dress was adorned with ruffles all the way around the top of the sweet-heart neckline and sleeves, and also all along the bottom. The garment also had multiple layers. One layer was of a lavender color. There was also a layer on top of that, which was made of a more sheer-material and had stripes of off-white and lavender. This second layer was subtle enough to add shiny detail, without taking away from the beautiful purple color. The dress also had a sash of the second layer’s same material, around the waist. My garment was rich in

A quinceañera receives a gorgeous gift from a family member on her fifteenth birthday, something that she will carry with her forever. In this cultural celebration for our family, it is very important for the father to give his daughter a special jewelry that resembles his love for her on her fifteenth birthday; the way it presents itself, how it would embody her physically, and how it would be carried throughout the years. My father took time and care in choosing the right gift for his princess. The gift that my father gave me was a necklace that touched my heart. It shines when light hits the gold carvings. It glistens in different shades of yellow when the sun comes out. This necklace started as a real gift of nature, so it has some natural variation in the size and shape. Every ornament is unique! The leaf is plated in copper, nickel, and finally gold. The process of the plating leaf into gold made the importance stronger to me, because it is very time consuming. There are two layers of metals applied to the leaf before the gold was applied. These layers help make the leaf very sturdy and long-lasting. It connects to the chain with an oval clip that has small cuts mimicking the shades and shape of a sea shell. The chain has two thin layers of gold crossing together, creating an ong...
The composition of this painting forces the eye to the woman, and specifically to her face. Although the white wedding dress is large and takes up most of the woman’s figure, the white contrasts with her face and dark hair, forcing the viewer to look more closely into the woman’s face. She smokes a cigarette and rests her chin on her hands. She does not appear to be a very young woman and her eyes are cast down and seem sad. In general, her face appears to show a sense of disillusionment with life and specifically with her own life. Although this is apparently her wedding day, she does not seem to be happy.

Over 12 years of injustice have been given to the inmates at Guantanamo Bay prison. Guantanamo Bay prison is unfair and unjust for many reason and should be closed. The first reason is nasal feeding enforced even though it is painful and harmful. The second reason is inmates are subject to cruel punishments .The third reason is prisoners have no way of proving that they are innocent. This is just the tip of the iceberg on why Guantanamo Bay prison should be closed.
When one thinks of war they think of one side attacking the other, but in this war we spend much of our time in damp, muddy trenches, which smell of sewage and rotting corpses. The sun is high so we all lay low in the trenches to avoid sniper fire. So I sit and rest enjoying the break, using the time to clean my bolt-action rifle. My fellow brothers-in-arms are busy taking care of everyday tasks such as personal hygiene or writing letters home.

Rossetti shows us the woman being painted as many different things. Although she is just a painting, the woman symbolizes how the artist views women in real life: as objects. Irony is used when the woman is painted as “a queen”(5). She is put on a pedestal in a position of power, yet she is only described as being “in [an] opal or ruby dress”(5), cementing her role as an ornament. The ruby symbolizes passion and perhaps promiscuity. Opal is a white stone that reflects many colors. White symbolizes purity; while the different colors reflected symbolize how her meaning can change, and how the artist controls her identity and can make her fit any persona he desires. The woman is also depicted as a “nameless girl”(6), indicating her identity is not important to the artist. It also shows that he does not personally know the women he’s painting, but only their looks, affirming that he bases their value off of their appearances. Lastly, the artist portrays a woman as “a saint [and] an angel”(7) and compares her to the “moon”(11), an allusion to Artemis, the goddess of virginity. In this painting, she is established as a pure virgin, which was a requirement of the time period Rossetti lived in. However, because it is one of the fantasies the artist creates, and the poem antagonizes him, this line also expresses the idea that a woman’s purity should not define her. He makes the innocent virgin and the licentious queen the only ways women can be viewed. Yet, they are the same to him. Lacking depth, their physical description is the only thing giving them any meaning. Rossetti describing the portraits conveys the idea that no matter the position in society; or what their actual personalities are like, women are just blank canvases for men to project their fantasies onto. Uninterested in a real person, the artist worships the idea of a
