On the night of January 17, 2015, student-athlete Brock Allen Turner met his soon-to-be victim while attending a party at Kappa Alpha fraternity house, located on the campus of Stanford University (AP, 2016). His victim, Chanel Miller, who was not a student, was in attendance with her younger sister (60 Minutes, 2021). Following her sister’s departure, the heavily intoxicated Chanel lost consciousness behind a dumpster near the fraternity house. Consequently, Turner, who was also intoxicated, was able to sexually assault Chanel in the early morning. Turner continued his assault until he was observed by graduate students, Peter Johnson and Carl Arndt, who Turner fled from. The police also acquired the graduate students’ account when they conversed with Johnson and Arndt. Within hours of the assault, Brock’s police interrogation was underway, and Chanel had regained consciousness, allowing the police to inquire as to her memory of what occurred. Although Chanel could not remember what happened, she was willing to undergo a rape kit test. In addition to the rape kit test, Brock and Chanel’s blood-alcohol levels were tested (Levin, 2016). While Turner had a blood-alcohol level double the legal limit, Chanel’s was three times the legal limit. Hoping to acquire more information, law enforcement talked to several additional Stanford University students (Crimesider Staff, 2016). While the police were the main players as it relates to the investigatory aspect of the case, these roles were filled by Deputy District Attorney Alaleh Kianerci, defense attorney Michael Armstrong and Judge Aaron Persky regarding the case’s judicial component (AP, 2016).
