The American philosopher and psychologist William James stated,“So it is with children who learn to read fluently and well: They begin to take flight into whole new worlds as effortlessly as young birds take to the sky” (“William James Quote.”). Bringing children into the world of reading as soon as possible opens up many opportunities for future success. Despite that, a great deal people do not read frequently, and there are countless more who see reading as a chore. Where does this lack of reading stem from? According to Glenda A. Gunter, many people who are avid readers for entertainment credit their enjoyment to being able to create a movie in their head. In her experience, some learners have not been taught the ability to create intense visual representations of the text they read. She believes that only learning digitally can inhibit them from gaining and exercising those skills (Gunter). I agree with Glenda’s theory because sometimes digital entertainment and learning does the creative thinking for people, and it takes away the challenge of having to use your imagination. Gunter also thinks that this could cause learners to have negative feelings toward reading because they don’t think it is as engaging as digital presentations or entertainment (Gunter). I agree with this point because if you are used to technology doing all the imaginative work for you, like how certain things look or sound in your head, why would you be attracted to the idea of having to do that yourself? The static nature of reading seems less attractive to people compared to the ever-changing nature of technology. In addition, many people no longer consider reading enjoyable because it is now so much easier to just watch a movie, presentation, or video document. In the essay titled “How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading” written by John Holt and published in Reading for writers in 2013, Mr. Holt discusses why most children aren’t interested in reading. Mr. Holt spent fourteen years as an elementary school teacher. He believed classroom activities destroy a student’s learning ability. Mr. Holt never let his students say what they thought about a book. He wanted his students to look up every word they didn’t know. People can learn difficult words without looking them up in the dictionary.
Reading is on the decline and our reading skills are declining right along with the amount of reading we do. This is happening right across the board through both genders, all age groups and education levels, people are busy and they just do not have time to read books that they are not required to read for school or work. There are serious consequences to this neglect of reading that will continue to worsen if ignored. We need to take notice of what is happening to our culture and stop this situation from continuing, we must act to correct these issues that we are faced with. These things are discussed in the essay “Staying Awake’’ by Ursula K. Le Guin who uses the NEA essays “To Read or Not to Read’’ and “Reading at Risk’’ to support her argument that there is a decline in the amount of time that we are spending on reading and our ability to understand what it is that we are reading.
If you had the choice between your phone and a book,you would probably without thinking grab your phone. But what if you knew that reading is crucial to a future. In “Reading for pleasure Is in Painful Decline” by Stephen L. Carter and “Twilight of the books” by Caleb Crain, both authors argue about the state of reading in The United States. Within both passages they give valid points as to why and how the state of reading are negatively affecting the country. Stephen L. Carter represents how the decline in reading for fun is the main concern, while on the other hand, Caleb Crain shows it’s technology and social media that actually are the main contributors.
On October 10th, 2017 at Springhurst Elementary School, I conducted a “Reading Interest Survey” and the “Elementary Reading Attitude Survey.” These surveys were conducted on a 1st grade student, Jax, to determine what his feelings are towards reading in different settings, what genres he prefers to read, and interests. It was found that Jax doesn’t mind reading, but prefers a few different topics. This was evident through his raw score of 30 on recreational reading, and a raw score of 31 on academic reading.
Carr’s article introduced author and developmental psychologist, Maryanne Wolf’s idea that “we are how we read” and how she worries that the style of reading promoted by the Net (a style that puts “efficiency” and “immediacy” above all else) may be weakening our capacity for the kind of deep reading that emerged when earlier technology (the printing press) made long and complex works of prose commonplace. Carr feels that humans are losing their ability to read and think like they used to before the internet was so popular.
Reading has been going through a steady according to the article “Why Literature Matters”. Dana Gioia believes that the decline of reading in America will have a negative effect on society. He believes that there are many people that contributes to the decline of reading but mainly in the young adults ages 18-24. Dana also believes that with the steady decline of reading we can see a major change in our nation including, being less informed,active, and having the ability to have an independent mind. Dana Gioia states that “The most worrisome finding in the 2002 study [Survey of Public Participation in the Arts],however, is the declining percentage of Americans, especially young adults, reading literature.”

Literacy plays a significant role in civilized society. In Raksha Shetty’s CBS News article, “Hugh Decline in Book Reading.,” he interviewed, Dana Gioia, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), about the decline in students reading for fun. Gioia states that “what we’re seeing is an enormous cultural shift from print media to electronic media, and the unintended consequence of that shift” (qtd. in Shetty) There has been a huge increase in technology available to today’s youth. Now, as a nation, the issue of those who can read and can not it no longer an issue of can not read but will not read. While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
I want to share the experience that I got from reading to the little kids in Washington school. This had been my first time doing community service so I was a little nervous, I didn't think that the kids where going to like me. But when I go to the school and saw the lovable little kids I felt much better. When we got into little groups and started reading they started hugging me and reading along. They made me feel good and I was ready to come back next Thursday. This was the greatest experience that I had ever had, I felt like a teacher and it fells great to have those little kids liking you.

Another reason why Shylock's controversial soliloquy is famous is because it deals with his reactions to, and feelings about, the anti-semitism in the play.
In today’s world, people are no longer confined to reading print books. Many people are embracing the digital world they live in by accessing reading materials through electronic devices. Over the last couple of years, e-reading capabilities have shifted to become available through devices like smart phones, tablets, computers, and e-book readers. While many individuals have noted the physical differences between reading print versus reading electronically, few have studied if the use of e-readers alters the manner in which material is read. Without the consideration of these effects, many schools have begun using electronic reading devices in the classroom as a substitute for print books. Therefore, it is important that the effects of e-reader usage on their ability to understand or comprehend literature be studied, in order to afford today’s children, the internet generation, the best opportunities for success in literacy.

How we read and write has evolved from cave walls to stone tablets to paper to keyboards. The digital world will not change what we read, but how we read. Because the experience of reading, the love of narrative, and cravings for story-telling is instilled into our DNA. Reading is a basic human need, it is evolutionary. Even though our means of attaining information or story telling may change, the act of reading is literally forever-lasting.
Nowadays, many people think reading is not necessary, since there are so many sources of information and types of entertainment, such as TV, cinema and the Internet. I believe they are wrong because reading is very beneficial in many ways.
