The story starts in the Middle Kingdom or China in 1903. Moon Shadow is a boy who has never seen his father before because his father left to the Land of the Golden Mountain or San Francisco in America before he was born. Moon Shadow now lived with his mother and grandmother in the Middle Kingdom.One day, Hand Clap, a distant family cousin that works with Moon Shadow’s father, came for a visit. Hand Clap, Moon Shadow’s mother, and Moon Shadow’s chat. Hand Clap then reveals that Moon Shadow’s father,Windrider, sent him to take Moon Shadow to San Francisco. Moon Shadow goes to San Francisco and gets accepted by Uncle Bright Star.He is disappointed that there is not really a “golden mountain”. Moon Shadow knows because one day he went to take out the trash and some boys were picking on him and he just walked away. Windrider and Moon Shadow began reading books about the Wright brothers and wrote what they saw but they didn’t know the schematics.Moon Shadow started to read dime novels and asked Miss Whitlaw to write a letter to the Wright brothers.A while later the Wright brothers sent them the schematics and Windrider and Moon Shadow began working.Windrider continued writing to the Wright brothers after that and Robin decided to have a picnic on the beach with everyone. After eating everyone flew the gliders. They each took turns flying until the sun set. Then when they were about to leave Windrider tied a copy of Lefty’s poem to the glider and cut it loose. The next day while making squid, Robin told Moon Shadow that Jack, his bully, was scared of blood. So he went outside and punched him and he bled. He was surprised and they never bullied him again. Later Miss Whitlaw, Windrider, Moon Shadow, and Robin went to look at constellations. They looked at “demon” and Chinese constellations and Windrider told them about the story of the Milky
