A norm violation is when a person violates a norm which is defined as social expectations that guide behavior. The norm I choose to violate is walking on the left side and opening the left door instead of walking on the right side and opening the right door. I chose this norm because I hate it when people walk on the wrong side or use the wrong door in public; however, being on a college campus I have learned to become more tolerant because many foreign exchange students are used to walking and entering on the left side. To me this was a norm I could violate that would make me and other feels uncomfortable, but would not be a huge inconvenience to others. I am some who tries to be aware of her surrounds and ensure that I am not being an annoyance or disturbing others. So going into the day and knowing I would be breaking the norm of walking on the wrong side made me a little nervous, but I knew it would not be too big of a deal. While breaking the norm I chose to feel bad, I believed that I was being an inconvenience to others and that I looked like I was ditsy, not aware of my surrounds, and inconsiderate of others. Sometimes I walked on the wrong side with my head up, while other times I did look down or look at my phone to avoid eye contact. Going through the left doors was not as embarrassing (but still a little embarrassing), but walking on the left side at the mall was more nerve-racking and embarrassing. When it came to walking on the left side in stores and the restaurant it was not as difficult because people were walking in different ways in all different directions, so that was not as bad. After, I felt a little embarrassed, but it was not something that bothered me long after once I was out of the situation. It was a different feeling going out of my way to break a norm and trying to stand out than trying to fit
