Othello is Breaking Bad Shakespeare’s work has been adapted throughout the ages, these adaptations can be found in almost every popular show and movie. One recent and quite popular television show that has Shakespearian elements is Breaking Bad. This show is a dark drama of Walter White a man who has lung cancer that becomes a drug kingpin to provide for his family after he dies, along the way he picks up a high school drop out as a sidekick, Jesse Pinkman. Walter and Jesse become the Iago and Othello in this variation, Walter’s deceitful and manipulative ways prove to indeed constantly manipulate Jesse to do his bidding. Shockingly similar to the way Iago manipulates Othello; these parallels between Breaking Bad and Othello become more and more clear with explanation and analysis. Many people have heard of Breaking Bad even though they may have never even seen it. Othello is a slow building play with many soliloquies by Iago and dramatic irony, which also occurs in the show. Walter has a few soliloquies, which he informs the audience of his future plans and his own intentions, while unbeknownst to those around him. (Gilligan, et.all. Breaking Bad: The Complete Series) This contemporary show gives a bit of insight into the humanity of Othello, the domestic themes, that deals with such things like jealousy and betrayal. The play almost seems conservative compared to the television series, although that is what made it such a hit. While people might not be able to relate to a high school teacher turned drug lord, they can relate to the themes of the show: betrayal of a friend, jealousy, loss, and etc. These themes are also in Othello, which is not exactly well known amongst the public.
