Settlers show bravery in lots of cases in the novel. First, on their journey they just committed themselves to the will of God because they knew if everything on the ship, Mayflower, was okay they could trust in God. When they got to shore they had no friends to welcome them, no one to entertain or refresh their bodies, and no place to go but they never gave up. They would look up to God and say, "Our fathers were Englishmen which came over this great ocean....." (Bradford 61). The voyage went another two months because of the weather conditions they were facing and everyone continued to stay calm and not worry too much about it. Bravery is also shown in the harsh conditions where we see that people were dying, suffering from starvation, and infected with diseases. After settlers on the ship saw this happen to others, they would try and do whatever it took to stay healthy and alive. In the end since they stayed brave through the whole journey and never gave up, they gathered small harvest and were able to have their first Thanksgiving …show more content…
Alexandra shows bravery through the dedication she puts into the land. She gives up her youth and chance to be happy because she has a vision of the future that requires hard work and dedication. She takes the role of leadership on the farm because her brothers Oscar, Lou, and Emil do not show any interest . By her choice of keeping the land she takes risks by buying more land, while her brothers decide to move to the city. She makes a brave decision on keeping the land and not letting go, even though her brother's disagree. She wants to reach the American Dream and never can give up if this is what she wants, so she goes off and does it on her own. "Alexandra drove off alone. The rattle of her wagon.... into the dark country (Cather 12). This quote shows that since she is traveling forward into darkened it strikes fear in everyone else. In the end, by her taking the risk of putting a lot of her dedication into the land to make her father happy and to help Emil by giving him a good life, this shows

Mark Twain best described courage when he said that, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear” (Twain). Both in The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey and Watership Down by Richard Adams, the authors deal with the topic of courage and each share a similar view on it as this quote. Indeed, both authors suggest that courage is not accumulated simply by acts of heroism, but rather by overcoming fears and speaking one’s mind as well. These books are very similar in the way that bravery is displayed through the characters in an uncommon way. Firstly, an example of bravery
Alexandra is a hard working young lady and will do anything to make her father proud. When the drought and depression struck three years later, Alexandra's determination to keep the farm allows her to persevere. Many families, including Carl Linstrum's, sell their farms and move away. However, Alexandra believes in the promise of the country and staying true to her father's word. She convinces her brothers to re-mortgage their farm and buy more land. She also convinces them to look for more innovative farming techniques.
...hemes fed their families, Alexandra’s hope was renewed continually by the promise of Emil’s future. When he dies, her dreams for his future are shattered, but her own are then able to be seen more clearly, without the filter of another person to care for. Ivar allows her to be herself to some extent, and more importantly can talk to her about things that only they can understand, about the land and the earth and the forces that move within it. Finally, Carl comes to his childhood friend’s rescue and reminds her that there is an entire world outside of Nebraska, and in that world she doesn’t always have to be the only one who truly cares. Through all of these men’s influences, Alexandra is in turn optimistic, hopeful, broken, and renewed. Without these changes within her self, she would never come to know exactly who and what she is– a farmer, a pioneer, and a woman.
Courage: the ability to do something that frightens one, meaning the act of being courageous is not to be deterred by danger. This one word can categorize a person on a whole higher level. Stonewall Jackson exemplified tho word better than anyone else ever could have. For example, at the first battle of Bull Run, while several Confederate units were falling into disorder and panic, their general pointed to Jackson and his men who were withstanding the attack and said "There stands Jackson like a stone wall!" thus urging his men to gather their courage as well and regroup behind Jackson's position. In spring 1862, in Shenandoh Valley, Virginia, Stonewall created the Valley Campaign. In Jackson’s Valley Campaign, he marched
Bravery is like a very trusted friend, it will never let you down. That statement holds true in the great epic of "Beowulf." "Beowulf" is the story of a great hero who comes to the aid of a troubled king. Beowulf hears that king Hrothgar is having trouble and immediately comes to help with no questions asked. he defeats the monster, Grendel, with his bare hands. Beowulf then defeats Grendel's mother along with a dragon until he is fatally injured. Bravery is a very admirable characteristic that few people possess.
Courage is a vital part of Lewis and Clark's journey to the end of the Columbia River in Oregon. They showed courage by doing many acts including, fighting bears
Alex Rider made it very clear near the middle of the book that he is not the cowardly character I truly thought he was. He changed a great deal from the beginning of the story from a fearful fourteen year old boy to a courageous young man at the end of the story. Alex learns about how sometimes, you should put other’s needs (and in this case lives) in front of his own. This is a great lesson he learned because the people who follow this teaching are the people who make a difference in society today. This whole idea links all the way back to my thesis that courage is necessary and is measured by someone’s ability and willingness to express courage, not by their size or strength because that lesson definitely requires courage.
By definition, bravery is courageous behavior or character. Most stories, including epic poems, are based around the idea of bravery. Many people hold a common misconception about bravery. They believe that bravery is the same as being without fear. But being brave and being fearless are two different things. Many people skydive, do public speaking, ask questions, or enter relationships not because they are unafraid but because they are willing to overcome this fear. Or perhaps they are willing to go ahead despite the butterflies in their stomachs. To some, this is a foreign concept that prevents them from trying new things. However, others understand that “bravery is being terrified and doing it
The example of courage in Mockingjay is nothing short of what we all would ideally like to look up to. The display of courage is seen throughout the movie. Through acting or not acting during a situation. It obviously takes an extraordinary amount of courage to willingly put your life on the line for someone. Though there is courage displayed throughout the whole movie – it is really the highs and lows of compassion showed in certain situations to the inhumane acts. The characters can go from risking their life to save someone to killing someone that is trying to hinder them from reaching their ultimate goal – winning the Hunger
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.

Bravery is a heroic quality that everyone has and when put into action it can become deadly or even unstoppable. Martin Luther King pushed through the racism as if he had no fear of the consequences. Martin Luther King stood tall as Beowulf did when fighting Grendel for the Danes; people not his family but for those in need. They both fought having no fear of their death but the greatness they would achieve in the end. Beowulf and Martin Luther King were both men who fought for the people and not themselves.
