El Zayat 1 Rami El Zayat Mrs. E. Fernandez EAE2D-02 June 12th 2018 TITLE OF THE ESSAY Throughout time, us humans have learned to make links between things, for example a tooth brush, and toothpaste. We have a mind that allows us to mend things together and put the pieces of the puzzle together. As we learn more and more, we learn to make links between new things, like bravery and knowledge. It is shown through the book The Alchemist that bravery/courage and knowledge have a link, simply because throughout the book, the author shows how the main character (Santiago) learns how to evolve and notice that being brave needs something to back it up. The link is that, although humans need bravery to be able to overcome their fears and solve problems, …show more content…
A third way that knowledge is demonstrated to help someone with their bravery is knowledge of culture/tradition. The following statement is coherent simply because you cannot expect yourself to achieve success without understanding a certain amount of knowledge on languages, culture, tradition and religion. For example, when he gets robed in the beginning its because he didn’t know the language, when a man came up to him in the bar offering him to help him get on the way to Egypt he believed the random man even though the bartender was warning him telling him not to go with him. This example shows greatly how if you slack knowledge of information, you can easily get robed and lost which is what happened in the book, also showing that being brave and willing to find your personal legend, doesn’t matter if he you are someone who is unknowledgeable. Additionally, another notable example from the book would be when the alchemist is speaking to Santiago telling him to be brave saying: “if a person is living out his Personal Legend, he knows everything he needs to know. There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” (Coelho 146). In fact, the quote above shows that the only thing that stops you from going on from your personal legend is the fear of failure, which is driven by an unknowledgeable person. If you are indeed knowledgeable, nothing can stop you from achieving your personal legend. Finally, this, proves that you need a certain amount of knowledge with bravery to finally achieve your
Curious, courageous, young, adventurous: these are all words to describe Santiago, the protagonist in the novel The Alchemist. In this novel, Paulo Coelho develops Santiago’s character as a young boy who goes on an adventure to find his life’s purpose. Through the hero’s journey, Paulo Coelho insists that both internal and external struggles often cannot stop people from achieving their goals, ultimately encouraging people to fulfill self discovery and understand who they truly are.
The boy, Santiago, was driven to find a lost treasure. He was forced to leave his life as a shepherd and his home. He traveled a across a continent in search of his treasure. Joseph Campbell proposes that most works of literature follow one basic structure called a monomyth or the hero’s journey. In the novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, Santiago is a Joseph Campbell hero, because he follows the path laid out in The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell.
A dream or aspiration is a desire that people wish to achieve in their life just as badly as they want to breathe. There are many human beings all over the world chasing their ambition, although it’s not easy. Many people give up early on their dreams and fail to succeed once things become too difficult. However, individuals that fail to succeed do not live their dreams, they live their fears. These individuals are afraid of failure, hope, themselves, and unfortunately their dream becomes impossible to pursue. On the other hand, the individuals that become successful are the people who believe in themselves because when life knocks a dreamer down they must get right back up and continue to strive to reach their full potential. The novel The
Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage is strength in the face of pain or grief. Throughout the course of World War 2, there were many people who acted in a courageous manner, as portrayed by Markus Zusak in his novel 'The Book Thief'. Weather it was putting their entire life on the line just to save some strangers from possible torture, hiding illegal people in their own houses with the possibility of being killed or smuggling thousands of people out of the Ghettos and into hiding places at the risk of death, there were some extraordinarily courageous humans in World War 2 who not only saved other people lives, but they did it all at
“If you can dream it, you can do it,” is a quote that Walt Disney was known for saying. I simple means you can accomplish and reach every one of our dreams if you have the determination to pursue them. This is the main concept behind the essay of “The Dreamer.” By Junot Diaz. One of the best explanations of courage is the following by Maya Angelou: “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtues with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” Her explanation summarizes all that courage can lead you to who you are in life. Courage is standing up for what you believe in, despite disapproval, pain, fear, uncertainty, or intimidation. Courage is challenging what is normal. Courage is giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Courage is using whatever power available to educate the world about injustice. Courage is following your heart even when the path is not known. Courage is trying after failing.
As stated in How To Read Literature Like A Professor by Thomas C. Foster, “quests consist of five things, a questor, a place to go, a stated reason to go, challenges and trials en route and a real reason to go”. Based on the information from these elements, Santiago, the protagonist from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho had experienced a quest in following his ‘personal legend’.
Bravery is a heroic quality that everyone has and when put into action it can become deadly or even unstoppable. Martin Luther King pushed through the racism as if he had no fear of the consequences. Martin Luther King stood tall as Beowulf did when fighting Grendel for the Danes; people not his family but for those in need. They both fought having no fear of their death but the greatness they would achieve in the end. Beowulf and Martin Luther King were both men who fought for the people and not themselves. Martin Luther King was pushed to the edge when being jailed for protest, But through all he prevailed and overcame. Bravery
Bravery is where people have a lot of courage to maybe sacrifice something for someone. There has been a lot of bravery throughout the world, and many people do it differently. Also bravery can be someone who does it when others don’t expect it to happen. Like in the book The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, the spiders captured the dwarves and Bilbo saved them, and led the spiders away from the dwarves. Such as the quote” I shall draw the spiders off, if I can; and you must keep together and make it in the opposite direction “( Tolkien, 165). Bilbo shows bravery because he led the spiders away from the dwarves, so the spiders wouldn’t hurt them. Bravery is someone who steps up when no one else wants to, and does things for others rather than worry about
R. R. Tolkien shows bravery through “The Hobbit”. A valuable book away contains bravery in it. Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, can choose to stay in his cozy little house, instead of that, he choose to follow the dwarves for a adventure. In real life, walk out people’s own comfort zone is really a hard thing and needs a lot of bravery to do it. In the same time, bravery also has shown in the part that the dwarves and Bilbo Baggins was crossing the Mirkwood and they met these huge spiders. Bilbo Baggins could choose to put his magic ring on and run away and left his dwarf friends there eaten by the spiders, but he did not, instead he kill all the scary spiders and rescued all of his friends out. Even though sometimes Bilbo Baggins struggles a lot, but at least he always try to be brave. Bravery is a valuable part in novels and also in real
The Hobbit, by J. R. R. Tolkien shows the world that bravery is not something that comes with birth and background. It is something inside us all, and we just need to reach down and get it. Tolkien dives into this concept through Middle Earth, his fantasy land of elves, dwarves, dragons, goblins, and hobbits. The Shire is the beautiful, grassy home of Bilbo Baggins, a perfectly respectable hobbit in all manners. He leads an ordinary life where anything out of the ordinary is considered absurd. But then, one deciding day, the seasoned wizard Gandalf pays our hobbit Bilbo a visit. He brings tidings of the need of his help to go on an adventure in the east. Bilbo flat out refuses, but Gandalf has a surprise in store for him. A troop of
Bravery is the quality of a person who displays courage and fearlessness in the face of danger. Such qualities show splendor and magnificence in a person. Fear and terror sometimes hinder the determination someone can show. Overcoming this fear is what portrays bravery. In Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, Frederick Henry shows bravery by freely joining the Italian army, risking his life for some ambulance drivers and swimming to freedom, being shot at the whole way.
In the novel The Alchemist, the author, Paulo Coelho, develops Santiago’s journey by creating adversity for Santiago to overcome in order to find himself. The Alchemist is about a young shepherd named Santiago who has a reoccurring dream about finding treasure. During his adventure he meets a king who helps guide him in his journey to find his personal legend. During his travels Santiago encountered numerous struggles. Before he could even become a shepherd and start traveling he had to convince his father to “let him be a shepherd” (11).
Many people wonder and try to understand what a hero’s journey is, but fail to comprehend it. A hero’s journey is a journey taken by an individual that overcomes many obstacles. In the Alchemist, Santiago tried to discover his personal journey, and so did Odysseus in The Odyssey when he was away from his home and his family for 10 years. A hero sets off on a personal journey learn more about themselves, what they can endure physically, and the world around them.
As stated by Yeung Kathryn, “You get in life what you have the courage ask for”, courage is a highly acclaimed trait that shows the action on the consequences of fears and doubts. This is not a single characteristic. It is the combination of numerous quality such as bravery, passion, faith and so on which makes a perfect human being. Though it is very easy to pronounce, it needs lots of struggle to raise up. The value of courage is profound by motivation behind it. By being brave simply is not considered as courage.
