AP Long Form: Brave New World
Meaning of Title –According to many sources, Brave New World as a title is meant to be an ironic taking from a quote in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Though that might be the case, I interpreted it quite differently.
Brave New World is more a satirical version of 1984 in the fact that it’s just today’s society backwards, and the title in itself is quite ironic. While we do see “New World” as something very simple being it’s a dystopian novel, the “New World” is contrasted with a so called “savage reservation.” The two societies act as foils for each other to describe a world that is in a sense new, and one that is in another sense, old and cultural. What’s ironic about the title is the word “Brave.”
With the nature of the book being satirical and ironic, the title in itself needs to be as well. When Aldous Huxley titled the novel Brave New World, he intended it to be a little bit ironic.
