The Batboy is a book written by Mike Lupica. Mike Lupica is a former sports writer, but now writes sports books for tennagers. I have read a couple of his books. He is a great author. The main character is Brain Dudley who is a huge baseball fan he knows a lot of stats about a lot of players. Hank Bishop is a baseball player that is Brain’s idol. Cole Dudley is Brian's dad who was a MLB pitcher that played for a couple of teams before leaving Brain and his mom in Detroit to go coach baseball in the Japan League. Kenny Griffin is Brain’s best friend and they both play baseball on a travelling team called Sting.
Brain is a huge baseball fan he loves everything about baseball all the different stats and stuff. He lives with his mom in Detroit
The main character in the book The Batboy by Mike Lupica is Brian Dudley. Brian tries to solve a big problem with one of the players on the Detroit Tigers, Hank Bishop. Brian knows more about baseball than most MLB players. He tries to get Hank Bishop to be a good hitter again. Hank started going through a slump and almost nobody believed in him. He struck out or grounded out almost every time. Brian helped him get out of his slump and get to his 500 home runs. Brian had three big character traits, nervous, respectful, and helpful. His character traits affected him by making him who he is and making him a great person. Nervous changed him because he needed to tell Hank what was wrong with his swing but he waited a long time.
Hutch, the main character of The Big Field, has played baseball all of his life. He has always played shortstop, the same position that his father dreamed of playing as a professional. “Hutch, had always thought of himself as the captain of any infield he’d ever been a part of” (Lupica 1). Hutch finds himself being demoted to second base because there is another player, Darryl, on his new team that is expected to go pro and also plays shortstop. Hutch struggles because he does not want to play second base and his father does not support him because he does not want baseball to break Hutch’s dreams like it did his own. Hutch is betrayed by his father and Darryl when he finds them practicing together. Hutch has to learn to adjust and eventually becomes friends with Darryl, the up and coming shortstop. He understands that if he wants to win, then he needs to work together with Darryl. His father also comes around and finally gives Hutch his approval. Students should read this book in a high school English classroom because it demonstrates how relationships can be difficult, but teamwork can help to solve many issues.
Even as a child Derek loved baseball. He and his dad would often throw in the baseball field behind his house almost everyday. Although his dad sounds like a great role model for him, his Grandma Dot and Grandpa Bill were the most important people in his childhood. They were his moms parents. He would go visit them in New Jersey for weeks at a time. His Grandma would tell him stories about the best Yankee players and basically plant dreams in his head. At night he would watch the Yankee’s play with his Grandpa Bill and fall asleep in his lap. As soon as he woke up in the morning(which was ussualy pretty early) he would go into to his Grandma and say “Come on Gram! Lets go throw!”. They went through this routine every morning.
Fly-Boys written by James Bradley, reveals the truth about nine young American World War II pilots that were shot down over the island of Chichi Jima. Out of the nine pilots one was rescued by a submarine. The other eight were captured by the Japanese, and disappeared. After the war the American government, along with the Japanese, covered up everything that had happened on Chichi Jima. Which had meant that the lives of the eight Fly-Boys were erased. Only the American and Japanese governments knew that the pilots survived the war. In this novel James Bradley reveals the story for the first time. Although, critics might disapprove on all this information making him seem bias, but in reality it is the truth that has just never been discovered.
The Sandlot is a classic sports film that shows how the role of friendship plays in children’s development. The story takes place in a small suburb outside of Los Angeles in the summer of 1962. The main character “Smalls”, just moved to the town with his mom and step dad. He doesn’t really know how to make friends but started watching a group of boys that walked to the ‘sandlot’. Smalls has always stuck to science projects, so baseball is a new subject to him. The step dad has a love of baseball so when Smalls goes into his office he has trophies and a baseball signed by Babe Ruth. Smalls wants to be able to connect with his step dad, so he tries to learn how to play baseball with the guys.
Reuvan Malter is one of the main characters and he also narrates the book. His dad teaches at the school he goes to, which makes Reuvan very smart and friendly with most of the students. His household is not strict, but he is still very educated in the Talmud (the book of ceremonial law for all Jews.) Reuvan plays softball on the school team and is the player that guards second base. He is very clever and to keep his glasses from sliding off, he bends the ear pieces down right before a game. This ultimately results in an accident later on, but it is how he will meet the other protagonist named Danny.
During Graff’s childhood, he was not able to relate to readings that he was given in school. Instead, Graff was interested in baseball. Being that Graff was interested in baseball, he would often find himself reading books and magazines about baseball and baseball pla...
1. In the book, the father tries to help the son in the beginning but then throughout the book he stops trying to help and listens to the mother. If I had been in this same situation, I would have helped get the child away from his mother because nobody should have to live like that. The father was tired of having to watch his son get abused so eventually he just left and didn’t do anything. David thought that his father would help him but he did not.
Some people believe that Pearl Harbor is a nonsense thing that happened and that it wasn't so much of a big deal, but I believe that Pearl Harbor is a big deal and it's full of moments that will take your breath away and some that you will remember for a lifetime. The book Bat 6 by Virginia Euwer Wolff, is a book about two schools battling out for a softball game, the girls on each team have been waiting for this moment since they were little. Yet when the day comes a big secret is revealed about one of the girls on the team. This book is an ok book, it's got a lot going on with the characters, and the stuff that's going on about Pearl Harbor. Like I said it's ok but I wouldn't read it again. Obviously, the book bat 6 is an ok book but
The Natural written by Bernard Malamud was a very well written book. I really am not a big fan of baseball but I did enjoy this novel. This book is about never giving up no matter how bad the situations gets. Roy Hobbs wanted to be the best baseball player that ever lived, who broke all the records, and when he went walking down the street he wanted people to say, “Hey that’s Roy Hobbs, the greatest player of all times.” He would have been excellent and could have played baseball for many years, but someone didn’t want that. He was shot and it injured him terribly. Hobbs finally made it back and was found by a scout and was sent to play for the worst team in the league. I like how Hobbs never gives up. He goes up against the corrupters, the seducers, and the glory destroyers. No one wanted to let Hobbs play because he was old, they thought he should be at the age to retire not to just begin. This book goes to show that you can do anything if you set your mind to it and if you want it bad enough. Hobbs proved everyone wrong. He was worst possible thing happened, he met a girl. He started getting distracted and it a effected his game. Hobbs let a woman mess with his head. When Hobbs would go up to bat, he usually hit a home run but when he met this woman, he started striking out. I guess you could say that she was bad luck. Well, he eventually made is mind get cleared and was back to his old self. Another reason why I liked this novel is because it kind of gives a l...
Generally, adolescents feel as running away from home is a solution to all their problems. Most people think that running away from one’s problem leads to negative consequences, however, that is proven wrong, according to the novel Crabbe by William Bell. In the novel Crabbe by William Bell, 18-year-old Franklin Crabbe’s decision shows that running away is a considerable approach to solving one’s problems. He packs his bags and runs off into the woods in hopes of finding inner tranquility and freedom. Throughout his journey in the woods, Crabbe unexpectedly receives more than what he seeks for. In the woods, Crabbe receives great rewards such as quality moral support from a strong willed woman named Mary Pallas, he obtains many important survival skills, and he becomes an overall more responsible and mature person.
The novel The Natural is written by Bernard Malamud. Bernard was a famous author mainly known for writing short stories and novels. He was considered one of the great American Jewish authors of the 20th century. Bernard was born in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were Russian Jewish immigrants and he had a brother named Eugene. Unfortunately, Malamud entered his adolescence when the Great Depression began. The Natural is one of his more famous books, which was written in 1952. This novel is about a baseball prodigy named Roy Hobbs. He has a bat that he made himself, which he calls Wonderboy. Roy plans to join the major leagues and break all the records. However, his plans are put on hold when a woman he meets shoots. After fifteen years after the tragedy Roy goes back to baseball and is drafted to the New York Knights. Along his journey to becoming a superstar he is distracted from his goal by the women in his life. The Natural is very much similar to the mythological story of Perceval, the Story of the Holy Grail. Roy Hobbs is comparable to Perceval, Pop Fisher to the Fisher King and the pennant to the Holy Grail.
The movie being analyzed is the Sandlot. The relationship between the two main characters is a friendship, which begins with one boy who is desperate for friends and another who is searching for The Sandlot’s last teammate. The friendship between Benny and Small’s is an accurate depiction of the development of friendship in real life. In the movie, Scotty Smalls (Smalls) moves to a new neighborhood. One of his new neighbors happens to be the best baseball player in the neighborhood, Benny, who eventually teaches Smalls how to catch and throw so that the team has a ninth player. What begins as filling a baseball position eventually leads to a strong bond between the two main characters. Throughout the summer, the team plays baseball, goes swimming, plays baseball, goes to the fair, and plays baseball. A dog known as “The Beast” lives behind the fence of The Sandlot. The Beast is said to have eaten every baseball and person that has ever been on the other side of that fence, so when the boys hit Small’s stepfather’s signed baseball over the fence, they have to come together to retrieve the baseball. In the movie The Sandlot, directed by David M. Evans, the development of the friendship between Scott Smalls and Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez is conveyed through their communication. The Sandlot shows the progression of a friendship and the importance of communication to help a friendship flourish.
The Speckled Band by Sherlock Holmes Detective stories first became popular in the Victorian era following the emergence of organized police forces in the 1830's. Fascination with the criminal heros accompanied a corresponding interest in the methodical uncovering of crime. Public hangings were frequent and Victorian people feared crime greatly. This meant that when the detective stories came about they felt the fictional character that cracked every case became the perfect detective i.e. Arthur Conan Doyle's character, Sherlock Holmes. SherlockHolmes was actually an amateur detective not a member of the London plaice force and the Victorians had a deep resentment against the police, as they were unable to solve the infamous Jack the Ripper crimes.
Life is difficult, many people have come to face with many unfortunate events which have affect their life in a severe way. Some accidents cause a great deal of people to have brain damage and they would no longer possess the cognitive capabilities they had before their accident. However, a neuroscientist name John Donoghue invented a technology which assist people who have brain damage, this device is called the BrainGate. The BrainGate “help people who have suffered debilitating brain injuries communicate (Kaku, 2011, 33).”
