The film powerfully illustrates how these broader social forces can trap individuals in cycles of violence and poverty despite their personal aspirations or efforts to break free. My upbringing was not a direct comparison of this movie’s themes. There are some clear similarities, with the life of Tre and his father Furious. When growing up in Nigeria, my whole family placed an importance on education just like Tre. I was enrolled in a private school and was encouraged to focus mainly on my grades as it would lead me to a better life and allow for more opportunities. A sentiment my parent’s echoed is that they wanted me to be better than them and not make the same mistakes they did. This led to them providing many opportunities for me to allow me to grow and develop. This allows me to relate to Tre, while contrasting with the other two characters in the movie, Doughboy and Ricky. Just like Tre, my parents played a major role in my socialization as I picked up on their habits and their beliefs as they were seen as a figure to look up
