[1] Baseball is America’s favorite pastime. When people hear the word "America," they think of apple pie, meat and potatoes, July 4th, and inevitably the everlasting love of this country, baseball. The credit is given to a man named Alexander J. Cartwright, who drew up a set of rules for a game played with a bat, a round ball, and a glove. Along with the rules came a sketching of a diamond-shaped field on which the game was to be played. The rules that Cartwright wrote up in 1845 may have very well changed somewhat, but the game of baseball has remained remarkably constant throughout history into today.
In the late 1950’s and into the 1960’s, came the introduction of today’s modern Bowling Centers.
In America, it all began in the industrial age, which brought long work weeks and boring jobs. The employees across the nation were in need of a break. Ever since the mid-nineteenth century, white American settlers began to participate in organized sports such as baseball, football, basketball, curling, and bowling. In as early as 1820, a game involving a bat, bases, and a ball was evolving in the

“In his courageous travels, famed explorer, James Hankinsmak, befriends the Nobui tribe. It is here in this arid climate that Hankinsmak would witness the game that would later bear his name. He wrote of a game played with inflamed, sundried elephant testicles in which one of the testicles was rolled from an elevated mound to a designated Mohafa (or kicker). The Mohafa is allowed to request speed and texture of the roll, and scoring is determined by the distance of the kick. The importation of Hankinsmak's records to the U.S. has been traced to Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine's 1981 World Tour. With this information now in the hands of Americans, the hybrid of Baseball and Hankinsmak was created - thus introducing... Kickball” (The History of Kickball 1).
It was Thanksgiving Day in 1887, and just like men would today, they were watching football. The alumni of Harvard and Yale got together to cheer on their former schools. After the game, a man from Yale, in celebration, picked up a boxing glove and tossed it across the room at the Harvard graduates. Using a broom handle one of the Harvard men hit the glove away. This gave George Hancock, one of the men who was gathered there for the game, an idea. He took two boxing gloves tied them together and made a large ball. Then he chalked out a small diamond, like the ones in baseball, and broke a broom handle to use as a bat (History). The group of twenty played the first game of what would become known as softball. After an hour, the game ended with a score of 41-40 (History). At the time the game was called indoor baseball, and became a popular sport in the city of it’s creation, Chicago (History).
I am a high school softball coach and a high school social studies teacher. The reason why I am coaching softball is because I love softball and would like to teach other people about the sport I love. One day I would like to see the girls I coach love softball as much as I do. Softball is not the only sport, but it is a part of my life and it is the game that I love. The reason why I would like to teach social studies is because social; studies is my favorite subject and I would like to teach my student how many people risked their lives and died forming our country. The history of softball started when softball was invented in 1887 came about at a football game. It was first a boxing glove and then it was transformed into an “indoor baseball”. During the years the sport got its name “softball” even though it is bigger than a baseball and nothing softball about it. Even though softball was invented by men it has been transformed into a women’s sport. Softball is one of the most popular sport in the country and can be estimated to about 40 million Americans engage in at least softball games each year. Softball is the most interactive sport around the world. Softball is play nationwide and is very popular in the world.
Softball is a sport that is known throughout the United States and the world. Softball originated on Thanksgiving Day in Chicago in 1887. The game was actually said to have begun as an indoor game. Softball was started by a group of men who had gathered at a club to watch the Harvard vs. Yale football game. When the news came that Yale had defeated Harvard, 17-8, one Yale supporter, overcome with enthusiasm, picked up an old boxing glove and threw it at a nearby Harvard alumni, who promptly tried to hit it back with a stick. This gave George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, an idea. He suggested a game of indoor baseball. Naturally, Hancock's friends thought he was talking about playing a game outdoors, not indoors. Hancock, however, wasn't kidding. Using what was available, he tied together the laces of a boxing glove for a ball. Using a piece of chalk, Hancock marked off a home plate, bases and a pitcher's box inside the Farragut Boat Club gymnasium, with the two groups divided into two teams. The final score of the game was 41-40, but what was significant was that Hancock and his friends had invented a sport that would grow in popularity to where today more than 25 million people enjoy playing it in the United States and millions more internationally in more than 100 countries. Hancock set up rules and had his friends over to his house every Saturday night to play this new game. From there it spread all over Chicago. The first rulebook is said to have b...
The History of Golf Balls The golf ball has changed dramatically over the years. Smooth hardwood balls were used between the 1400 and 1700's.
Golf. A sport that started out with just a wooden stick and ball, is now a very well know game by many people all around the globe. The sport that also just started out as a way to mess around has become a job for some of the people and is making some golfers millions of dollars each year. A sport that many people spend their whole lives playing or watching used to not be exactly what is today. Even though golf is a very well known sport now, golf has been around for hundreds of years and is played by people all over the world. The sport of golf has been dated all the way back to years before 1,000 and has kept growing exponentially ever since. According to the International Golf Federation, they have 144 different countries a part of the organization, leaving out 51. The game of golf is played at many different levels all the way from junior tournaments, all the way to professional events. The evolution of the sport of golf is made up of a couple main things. To start, baseball is referred to as “America’s pastime.” The sport itself has come a long way from its crude and humble beginnings in the fields of the nineteenth century. Baseball was not invented by a single individual, but it evolved from various European “bat and ball games.” Russia had a version of baseball called Lapta, which dates back to the fourteenth century. It consisted of two teams with a pitcher and a batter. The ball would
Wrestling has been around longer than any other sport recorded as far as we know. Wrestling is the Number 6 sport for high schoolers primarily male. Wrestling was one of the sports in the ancient Olympic Games in Greece, dating back to 776 B.C. The United States has won 129 Olympic medals, which is fourth among all U.S.
One big difference is a type of balls used and what is used to make the balls. For a tennis ball, the "modern tennis balls are made of a hollow rubber core, covered in a wool or nylon shell which is known as the nap. Pressurized air inside the rubber core makes the ball bounce. Balls that haven 't got enough pressure inside make a thud when they hit the floor. These are called dead balls." This information I found on www.bbc.co.uk, which also explains a little bit of the history of the tennis ball. In golf, the balls are made up of "many materials used in golf balls but the majority can is broken down into three categories: rubbers, ionomers and urethanes. In the past, golf balls have been made of wood, leather wrapped around feathers, sap from a gutta tree and sap from balata trees." This information is found on www.srixon.co.uk/ which goes further into the making of the golf balls. The tennis ball is two and a half inches (6.35cms) in diameter and weighs two ounces (56.7g). A golf ball is 1.6 ounces (45.93g) and 1.7 inches (42.7mm) in diameter. Even though tennis balls and golf balls are different sizes, they almost weigh the same weight. I find it very interesting that the balls are such different sizes but only a few ounces different in
