I was searching for a company that I hadn't heard of before. I wanted to do the research without any preconceived notions of how the company operates or what it's goals are. I ended up choosing a company called ADM. It stands for Archer Daniels Midland, and they are in the agricultural industry. They started in 1902 processing linseed oil which has many uses, most commonly as a wood varnish. Over the years they have diversified into corn, soybeans, cocoa, wheat, other oil seeds, peanuts and other similar products. They are currently headquartered in Chicago, IL. Their mission statement is “To unlock the potential of nature to improve quality of life.” The slogan for the company is “Resourceful by nature.”

Their popularity declined in the early nineties and they almost went bankrupt because of their unprofitable product mistakes and the fact that steve jobs was no longer working there. Apple started to gain popularity in the late nineties and really in the early 2000’s with Job’s return to the company as an advisor. I believe apple is a very bad company with how they treat consumers and generally conduct business.

In an ever globally growing society, a sustainable mindset is necessary. To accomplish common good for all, selfless leaders must rise to implement acts of service out of faith. Hope’s liberal arts perspective is geared toward shaping such individuals. Personal family values motivate me to seek this ideal of leadership and service. As a present student, I wish to capitalize upon the abundant opportunities for the acquisition of knowledge that spark my thirst for curiosity. But Hope also provides other experiences, and the Phelps Scholar community has delivered the experiences I predicted it would as I sought to expose myself to a more diverse environment. As a lifelong student now, and later, I pray to bring Hope College’s mission statement to fruition in order to lead and serve others.
For my analysis, I chose to write about Starbucks Coffee Company and its mission statement. Starbucks’ mission statement reads, “To inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.” We all know that Starbucks has enjoyed a huge amount of growth over the past 10+ years, and it is clear that they are seeing that success because they are putting their mission into action. Reading the mission statement, it’s easy to identify Starbucks’ areas of focus: the human spirit, coffee, and community. The company’s “About Us” web pages align with its mission statement.
