Title The Outsiders, a timeless novel by S.E Hinton, is one that takes readers on a roller coaster of emotions. Hinton wrote the novel in her teen years and mainly targeted it toward young adult readers. However, the plot, the characters, and the action result in the novel being read and enjoyed by a universal audience. The story follows the lives of two rival gangs. The Greasers live on the East and poorer side of town; the Socs, short for Socials, live on the West and more affluent side of town. The story is narrated by the protagonist and Greaser, Ponyboy Curtis. The novel begins when Ponyboy walks home from the movies alone. He is trailed closely by an automobile which held a group of Socs and worries that he will soon be jumped as a result of being alone. He fears he will be jumped, because a …show more content…
He gives them enough money and a gun and advises them to stay in an old abandoned church in another city until it is safe to do otherwise. To disguise themselves, they bleach and cut their hair, and to pass time, they read Gone With the Wind and play cards. After an anticipating week has passed, Dally comes with the news that there is to be a rumble between the Greasers and the Socs, and that Cherry Valance, a Soc, is now looking out for the Greasers. Dally explains that she said she will help them and testify that the Socs were drunk and looking for a fight and that the boys must have fought back in order to protect themselves. When Johnny hears Dally’s news, he believes that he and Ponyboy should return to their town and turn themselves in. Johnny explains that they cannot run forever, and it is not fair to keep Darryl and Soda worrying about Ponyboy, however, Dallas doesn 't want Johnny to end up in jail and become hardened by it, so he tries to talk him out of turning himself in, because he does not want Johnny to end up being a person like he
The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is a well explained novel about two rival gangs who feel only hate for each other. However, the gang gives them a home and develops true loyalty. Dallas Winston, a tough and rugged greaser best shows that one single character is able to have two completely opposing personalities. Dally is a wanted delinquent for many different crimes but is truly devoted to his own gang.
The main character of this book is Ponyboy. Ponyboy was a Greaser he was different from all the others he liked books and movies. Nobody in the Greasers digged books and movies the way Ponyboy did. Ponyboy was fourteen years old and he had two brothers that he lived with his older brother Darrel who they call Darry and his second older brother Sodapop who was sixteen going on seventeen. Ponyboy only live with his brothers because they mother and father was killed in a car accident. Ponyboy wanted to be like a movie star Paul Newman he wished he looked like him. Ponyboy always thought his brother Darry never cared about him or anything else. Ponyboy had a friend Jonny. Johnny was a Greaser too but he was the softest one but after he got jumped that changed he always carried a switchblade on him.
They go to a park and get jumped by a gang of Socs they had conflict with earlier that day. Ponyboy is held under the water of a fountain and to save his friend, uncharacteristically, Johnny stabs the leader, Bob, with a knife. Bob ultimately ends up dying right there next to the fountain. To escape the police, they run away to an old abandoned church with the help from Dally, another in their gang. They spend days there with only baloney, cards, and a copy of Gone with the Wind. Ponyboy says, “The next four days were the longest days of my life” (75). They both had to sleep on the hard, stone floor (67) with no blankets. When they ran away, it insists that they believed they had no choice and soon realized what a ghastly experience it would be. Spending their days on repeat, doing the same thing, eating the same thing, can become redundant. For them it was hard to stay inside the church even though fear kept them
Johnny and Dally are both very contrasting characters and each play a vital role in both the novel and Ponyboy’s life. Johnny is a soft character who is regarded as the stereotypical Greaser. Dally is a rugged and rough character that is regarded as a hoodlum. Therefore, I believe that this paper has been able to answer the topic question and also support my thesis.
chapter 4- I think that the "runaway" Johnny and Ponyboy are going to get into trouble or get beaten by socs. I believe this just because Pony said he was wrong when he thought that they were going to be safe out in the neighborhood at night.

Many stories have interesting characters and a enticing setting, not unlike this one. Throughout the timeless novel, The Outsiders, Hinton focuses on how people develop to maturity due to the responses they make when battling with hardship. The novel portrays the realistic life of two different types of teenagers and the experiences dealt in the process to demonstrate the transition between childhood to adulthood and the choice of responsibility that comes with it. Life in itself doesn’t stay constant; people keep changing, growing and developing into someone better or worse. Sometimes people judge too soon before putting themselves into someone else’s situation, therefore building up on misunderstandings. Hinton built the story conveying different types of change using events such as death including relationships, aspects and behaviours to transform the characters in the novel to stride to maturity.
